I’ve got some thoughts on Cullen and the romance thus I decided to take the time to share them with you all.

I was not expecting to enjoy the Cullen romance at all. In the beginning I chose it simply because the other romance options just never interested me. Nor was I ever on the fan train of Cullen to being with. However after romancing Cullen, I cannot help but remake the same character and romance Cullen all over again. It’s highly addictive, like chocolate.

 

Before jumping to the romance, I knew how Cullen was from previous games. It did surprise me how his view point changed from not trusting mages too trusting them. I am still unsure as to what changed his mind, since as far as I could tell Cullen never made mention as to what changed his mind.

 

I tried romancing Cullen as a non-mage and it felt a bit hollow. Maybe it’s just me having this thought that Cullen fallen in love with a mage after all that happened to him seemed to make the romance more meaty.

 

Considering all the crap Cullen has gone through I felt like it was about time he had some happiness in his life and not to mention he deserves some happiness.

 

I for one am glad to know Cullen and his past before diving into the romance. Knowing Cullen’s past allows me to have a patience with him. Without that patience, my character’s feelings with Cullen would cloud over and become selfish, especially in the choice of lyrium.

 

Speaking of the lyrium, the most important part of the Cullen romance is the choice on lyrium. Which in turn changes the romance-slightly.

I decided not to be selfish in this choice. Cullen has stop taking it for months and wants to be free of the Templar leash. While it does worry my character the effect it may have on Cullen, she however is willing to stand by his choice and support him. My Inquisitor cannot tell him to go back on lyrium for the off change it may kill him nor can she tell him to take it again considering how far he has come without it. If this is Cullen’s choice and since she loves the man so much, she will support that choice. There is an off chance my Inquisitor may die while stopping Cory but Cullen still supports my character going out and fighting the War. Cullen is steering himself through a storm and my Inquisitor will hold his hand and see him through no matter what comes.

 

Outside privacy Cullen is a rather determined and dedicated to his work. In private he is a complete sweetheart. As the romance progress Cullen becomes more and more in love with your character and protective that by the end of the game he forsakes showing public affections by giving your character a hug when your Inquisitor returns to Skyhold after the final battle.

 

The romance with Cullen is not perfect there are some things left out and the sex scene was less then intimate then I was expecting. That being said it’s still a good, very good romance.

 

 

Now I move onto a question that someone, anyone can clear up. I was told that other romances, like Bull, Sera etc sleep with you after The Ball OR Adamant. However Cullen sleeps with you after both. Thus it got me thinking and I tried to find an answer and came up empty. Why does Cullen wait so long?

Not sure about the other romances but Cullen has his story progress a bit after the first mission of the two you choose to do. Having him sleep with you at that point too would be a lot of content in one go. I don't mind having to wait to finish the second mission. Means his content is spread out just that little bit more.

I am only in the very beginning of the Solas romance (the initial flirts in Haven) but he seems much more calm cool and collected when it comes to flirtation/romance. Like the whole "are you calling me graceful?" "no I'm declaring it" If that dialogue had happened with Cullen he would've been like "uhhh i uhhh of course i mean yes i mean..." *turns away to hide his blushing* "soldiers put some back into it!!"

 

The first flirt with the goofy smile always gets me... I go for it even if I'm not pursuing the Cullen romance.  The Inquisitor is such a dork.

 

Though, I have to say, I really don't like the flirt where you ask Cullen about templar chastity.  It made me uncomfortable to ask, so I don't bother with it.

I really disliked this one too. That's just way too forward. Cullen had the reaction I would've to it, haha.

I cried a bit when I did my Sloas romance I just hope to god that my Lallven end with him just leaving my poor broken hearted Lallven as she balls up in secret and try's not to cry.

I agree emotions are way more intimate then just sex.

I also like to headcanon that that may have been their first time having sex, but only because they kept getting interrupted before that (which would play to being comfortable because they got some of the way).  Because I really like the idea of sexually frustrated Cullen....I'm a bad person.

 

i like how they kept getting interrupted. It makes it all the sweeter when they finally get away. And I think it's at least Cullen's first time especially if you did the fem mage origin story in Origins because he was always holding onto her in the back of his mind until he met the inquisitor. And even if you didn't do that origin story he was apart of the templar order and even if they didn't make vows I doubt there was a lot of time for him to get down and dirty especially given his mindset.

I think one of my favorite non-cutscene convos is one of the first in Skyhold. You ask him if there was anyone who caught his eye in Kirkwall and he replies "Not in Kirkwall" was the absolute best inflection ever. It's just perfect

I actually wrote a story about my Inquisitor stopping in the middle of them getting all sexy to tell him she wanted a list of "his conquests" and I am still amused about it.

haha I just wanted it to end on the line of "Do you take them? I-I mean your armor is nice..." At least the awkwardness would be shared instead of it being over-confident and suggestive Inquisitor essentially going "Eyyyy baybay!"

At least that's how Cullen's explanation came across to me.   Maybe Meredith thought Maddox was in contact with blood mages instead of his beloved and decided to put a definitive end to the threat.

Also... another things that I like about the Cullen romance and doing Ball followed by Adamant...

Before finishing Adamant the Inquisitor is missing a chunk of her memories, and essentially isn't a wholly complete person (like varric said we are the sum total of our experiences and memories). Getting them back and having that be the moment where she does decide she wants to be with Cullen has a bit more impact. The other way it's like she gets them back and then has to think about it for awhile or something. Anywho, just thought about that and I hadn't before.

It kinda reminds me of Buffy x Angel in that way. I like to think that on one hand, he's ancient and confident and smart and knowledgeable, stating almost like a slightly belligerent challenge, "Yes, I declare you're graceful. I dare you to tell me I'm wrong." On the other hand... heh, it's been a while, cue awkward trombone. 

 

Love. Him. 

 

And in penance for my Solas love... some confident Cullen. Heh.

wwhaaaat???         Oh man... rats. Why do the mages get all the good lines??  Someone told me they thought he'd gotten a little saucy in the early flirts. Now I see why.

Considering how Cullen is when I comes to women in general and his dedication to his work, I have a strong feeling he is a virgin up until your Inquisitor sleeps with him. I just cannot see him diving into sex given the length of time it takes him to sleep with your Inquisitor. Beyond that it seems out of his character to drop a few silver down at The Blooming Rose. I'm sure, Cullen, took care of his .... (Clears throat) "frustration" by himself when he had some privacy.

I wonder if Cullen and the Inquisitor will at some point play, " the secret desire demon and the upstanding knight."
