I dunno, the Fereldan Circle may have been one of the stricter ones. Wynne was there when she had Rhys taken from her, wasn't she?

My impression from Cullen is that Kinloch Hold was rather lenient with its mages, so I'm still inclined to think that it was one of the less strict Circles. Certainly on the Kirkwall scale. Taking a child from a mage is just what the Chantry does with mages. (source: David Gaider),

And I hope this doesn't come off as flaming, but I need to get this off my chest.  I'm a bisexual woman myself, and I don't like the implication that just because I'm pursuing a male romance option that I'm a straight player.  Or that those who are in m/f relationships are automatically straight.  You didn't know that, though; I didn't say anything about my sexuality here, but I just felt like it needed to be said.  Bisexual erasure is kind of a touchy subject for me.

She's not around to explain, but I'm really betting this was a slip of the keyboard. I can say with 100% certainty that she would be the last person to assume a person only plays their own gender/sexuality in game.

Cullen before he knocks the crap off his desk.  I like the look he gives her- definitely the look of a man in love:

Understood, it's just a touchy subject for me that I've faced IRL.  I didn't mean to come off as flaming, but rather wanted to clarify for my own sake.  I hope that makes sense.

OH I know! That's why I didn't want it to ...slip through. Just in case. Since it's the crack o' dawn where she is. :)

I think what Arty was trying to say was, that if there is marriage in the game would they make it equal for everyone or would it only be offered to the people in a heterosexual romance. Which, in all honesty and bluntness, would suck if the LI option was bi and it was offered to one sex but not another, which also brings it to would they also incorporate non-heterosexual marriage into the game as well or have it flat out denied for gay LI's? Coming from a country where it is legal to marry one of the same sex, and being a person who believes people should be able to marry who they want to marry, I would hope so but that may not fit in with DA law. I think this is where it becomes a bit tricky, unfortunately. I think I could safely say that everyone in this thread would want things to be equal for everyone but that is not always going to be the case, as to why marriage is sometimes better left to head-cannon. Trust me, Arty never would have meant it the way you may have interpreted it. She would be one of the first to vouch for equality for all. ^_^

Sorry......

Ah, ok I understand.  I was under the assumption that there was same sex marriage (at least in some places) in the DA universe, but I suppose I was wrong now that I'm checking the wiki:

There is pressure in certain circles, such as the elves and the human nobility, to marry an opposite-gendered partner, but this is motivated by pragmatism rather than morality; a homosexual couple cannot have biological children. For a dying race like the elves or dwarves, it is vital that every fertile individual produce offspring, and human noble families place great stock in the continuity of bloodlines in order to have clear heirs to noble titles and fortunes, and thus avoid the conflicts that often erupt when succession is not clear.

I wouldn't want anyone to be excluded (or left to feel uncomfortable), either.

I am really not sure. I did notice what seemed to be same sex couples in Orlais but have no idea if they were married or not.

Yeah, even the wiki is left rather vague.  Opposite-sex marriage is encouraged in a lot of circles (elves, dwarves, nobles), but that doesn't automatically mean that same-sex marriage is unavailable, either.

I really wouldn't be surprised with Orlesian nobles that they only have heterosexual marriages due to having offspring but quite open about same sex extramarital relationship... what do you call a male mistress? mistress? I think that would be acceptable as long as they were still producing the offspring society or family would "require" of them. Orlais seems quite relaxed and open about extramarital lovers and the impression I got from the Ball was that they didn't seem to care about same sex relationships either.

I'm under impression that there is no same sex marriage cause I don't think there ever has been married same sex couple in the DA that we would know. But this is just assumption though which might not be even true and like I earlier said in one of my post there might be even culture or cultures in Thedas where same sex marriage is allowed and we just don't know yet about them.

Just popping on to be a wee bit sentimental lol.

It's Hogmany in Scotland (New Years Eve) and a very emotional time for me and my family (and many others). We take time to appreciate who we have with us and remember those we have loved and lost.

You guys are just the best, I don't think I've ever been a part of anything as warm, friendly and yet so diverse. It's a pretty special thread and that's because of all of you!

Wishing all of you and yours the very best of health and happiness for 2015 :wizard: :wizard:  See you all around the corner in 2015 ;)

Slightly off-topic, but has anyone looked back at the Anomen Delryn romance in Baldur's Gate 2? I recall thinking it was amazing, but recently I decided to look at all the dialog again. Wow, that's cringeworthy material, and I'm embarrassed to have liked it in the first place hah! To be fair, he was a literal knight in shining armor, but still, Cullen is 100x better and more fun to interact with (dark past, awkward but more realistic personality, etc)

Bioware has certainly improved in romance material writing. *swoon* I wish I could personally thank his writer. I can't believe there was a chance of his romance not existing in DA:I, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see 4000+ posts worth of Cullen fans here. There was a definitely a "oh crap" moment when I realized who Cullen was as I went blind going into Dragon Age 3. "huh who's this commander guy? guess he's handsome...*googles his wiki page*..." ---> "oh god, he's that cute, awkward guy from DA:O"

Well, we know that Tevinter is out, obviously. Orlais, I would think would be more relaxed about it and maybe even the same for Antiva. Ferelden and the Free Marches I am not too sure about but I say they would have similar views. I have no idea about Rivain or the Anderfels, etc. When it comes down to it, I think reproduction is the main focus of marriage for Thedasians (is that even a word? lol), as you guys  said, especially among nobles or races like the elves and dwarves. I doubt most would marry for love and when you see it there, it is most likely something that has grown over time.

I would think most nobles would marry out of need to consolidate power, wealth, connections and lineage. Love may come to some of those marriages maybe.

I have no idea how the general population would view or even how the Chantry would view it.

It's one thing I liked about Elder Scrolls Online, you did run into same sex married couples.
