I like that the environments are bigger, but I don't think they need to be THAT huge. Ideally I'd scale all the environments down, remove 3 of the 4 desert areas (or however many there are, tbh I don't even bother with the Forbidden Oasis), turn Val Royeaux into a full scale large city with plenty of fun activities to do inside it, and then have each of the areas we visit in Thedas have side quests that tie directly into the main plot.

I have no idea why they didn't use the Emerald Graves and the Exalted Plains for side quests connected to the Winter Palace quest. If it was me, I would've wanted to earn our invitation to the ball by approaching either Gaspard, Briala, or Celene (depending on who you wanted to support for the throne) and done a series of quests for them, including trying to sabotage the other two or whatever. Completing a large chain of their quests would eventually grant us an invitation allowing us to undertake the main quest and move the story on.

Oh yea I don't mean completely eradicate the openness. I really liked not having boundaries (and jumping!) but I would've been happier with 2 or 3 of those huge environments with a lot more important stuff to do in them. And totally love the Winter Palace lead in idea. Would have really tied it all together better.

I don't think the issue was development time but rather how they used that development time.

I'm still holding out hope that all this space is a base that they are planning on injecting DLC content around. Basically, they built the base and they won't have to add side content to support the new story stuff. We have all the power we need to buy those missions with the side content they have.

Perhaps this is the one time that I hope EA want to milk the game for all its worth, if we're lucky it might enable BioWare to implement the things that weren't quite ready when it shipped, and introduce things that they wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

Time will tell, I guess. I just hope nothing gets cancelled like that DA2 expansion.

I actually really like the semi-open world in DAI, but also agree that story content was spread thin. I found myself thinking that maybe they should have had less zones, with more story-related content available within the zones that remained.

I sort of like it too, but frankly, I'm ready to just finish my first playthrough (yeah, yeah, I know) but I haven't even been to the Hissing Wastes yet! And I've got like 136 power. More story content, fewer "To Do" lists.

I think a lot of the time went into getting the Frostbite engine to work with an RPG game. I wouldn't mind finding out precisely how long the game took to make after they'd mastered the engine.

With the success its had so far I doubt anything will.

That's one bonus to all those GOTY awards then, LOL!

I'm thinking that frostbite was used to experiment on the open world to see how much Frostbite could really do, and now that they are proficient with it they can maybe restrain some of that in the future

I wouldn't enjoy it though; I tend to prefer s/s romances.

I understand how you feel. I prefer different races/species romances. Human/human is so vanilla bland and tedious. So much more interesting when there is a potential for cultures clashing, which I believe leads to personal character growth.

Cullen + Mage elf

Sera + Atheist qunari

Blackwall + bearded female dwarf, LOL! (Battle of the Beards)

Maybe, just maybe, if I do a "jerk" playthrough I could tolerate being a boring nob human for a Bull romance.

Too bad I have to play elf again to romance Solas.

I didn't even do the Hissing Wastes on my first playthrough. Got too impatient.

Well that's Skyrim's (and the other Elder Scrolls) thing right? I expect that when I start one of those games. Not DA. When I play a DA game I'm like bring on the laughter and the tears baby!

I guess that's where I'm different. I played Elder Scrolls before I came to Bioware RPG's so I missed the open world sandbox. I guess that's why I'm not part of the camp of folks that miss the tight story. Don't get me wrong, I love both types of games, but to me DA:I is like Skyrim and Dragon Age having a baby...it's by far my favorite one yet.

Doing a self insert playthrough is the worst because while I'm the height of an Elf I'm not as skinny as one, nor am I as short or stocky as a Dwarf (the size of their knockers is accurate though!)... and I'm certainly not built like a Qunari either, so I get stuck playing as a boring human. I'm still salty that I couldn't roll a common elf or an Elf from the circle because I really wanted to do the whole circle mage elf for Cullen to see what the relationship would be like, and I liked the idea of Thedas initally considering the herald to be below them both in class and race so that I could flip them the bird once he/she became a badass, LOL!

I love a good underdog story!

I love love love horses...and I was so stoked to be able to ride one in DA:I...the movement is right, the eyes are right...then I realized no party banter...enter sad-panda face.  :(

If I can mod Skyrim to have 5 companions at once, all riding horses...they should have been able to write that into this game in the first place. That way we could have had party banter on horseback.

I don't bother with the horses much, beyond collecting them. I find they don't really go much faster than the Inquisitor does by foot.

Yes but they look cool! Honestly to me that's half the fun of Skyrim...just wandering around on horseback looking at stuff. I'm like that with the MMO that I've played since 2007 where you can actually have mounted combat on a giant barded warsteed...I spend more time on horseback. I know I'm weird...

As much as I love the Elder Scrolls I really don't want the Dragon Age series to become like them... Having some of the same features is fine. But the story is what made me fall in love with Dragon Age, and the story is why I'm staying.

I find it really difficult to self-insert in a game. My bf does it, and I don't really see the appeal. I know what I would do in a self-insert playthrough--screw any actual characterization, and just choose all dialogue options and choices that are the most interesting. Me, the character would just be a random assortment of choices. So, my character would just end up being... some sort of manic/depressive kleptomaniac omniscient metagamer. Not very compelling. LOL!

I agree; I spent an hour exploring the far icy north last night in Skyrim :) I was appropriately enough riding Frost

Unfortunately I'm with Lola in regards to DAI; I only rode my giant deer once -- to win the three races in the Hinterlands so Bull would like me enough to sleep with me :P

I get really bored with MMOs and games like Skyrim, I guess I'm more story and character orientated with my gaming. If the characters are interesting/amusing I'll literally play any old crap... which goes some way into explaining why I adore Deadly Premonition, my gawd is that game crap... and utterly wonderful!

Yeah, I go by foot 90% of the time. I don't like missing out on party banter and plus, I am collector of herbs/minerals/whatever--can't leave that up to the advisers because they do a shite job of it.

And I think it says a lot that I abandoned DAI after one playthrough to return to Skyrim. And I'm a MUCH bigger BioWare fan than Skyrim fan.

I'd hoped that when Varric commented about Cullen being smug it was regarding the blossoming relationship between him and the Inquisitor, but apparently he just likes it when we take his advice, LOL!

Varric started to say this line to me right after the first kiss with Cullen, so I kind of assumed it had to do with Cullen being happy he is with the Inquisitor.  But if it is just from sending him on missions, he must say this to male Inquisitors also then?

I do it to see how badly I'd mess up if I was in that situation (always badly!) But I find that I'm only able to stay in-character and make the choices I would if the character looks like me (which is tricky in that character creator!)

I've been an ES player since Daggerfall, and I am accustomed to roleplaying through actions, not dialog choices. Thus, I feel most "in character" when I am engaging with the world physically- picking flowers, reading books, brewing potions, battling, etc, and I am not particularly put out by the focus on exploration in Inquisition. I prefer it, actually. I don't mean this disparagingly, but I have never found Bioware's main quests to be impressive or suspenseful in any way. For me, the well-written cast of characters that accompany the player is what invigorates the world, not so much the events of the world itself. And that's dandy by me.

I think that Bioware and Bethesda are often unfairly pitted against each other in discussions of how RPGs "should" be. In DA:I, I am seeing what a bit of a hybrid between the two could be like, and I like it. Though I wish Bioware hadn't taken a cue from Bethesda regarding the damned bears! Steroidal wildlife- I'd be happy to leave that in Tamriel! :D
