Hey Ti...how many words do you think would be too much for a 1st chapter?

Me? Dunno exactly. I'd guess around 2500 to 3000 for an upper limit, but I think a lot depends on what you're writing. Since my stuff is mostly conversation and very little action, I try to keep most of mine relatively short or they get tedious. I think the best way to judge is whether you accomplish what you want in the chapter without bogging down?

Mine are typically conversations as well, but this one is introducing the setting, two main characters, and just the story itself. I cut out some since it was redundant...but meh...back to editing, lol!

That's...disturbingly attractive. the artist even got the way the right side of his mouth curves up more than the left.

Imagine if Cullen had the same fate as Carroll :(

Save copies as you go, then go back and read a couple of the earlier ones to see if your chapter conveys the same thing in real terms without material you've cut.

I think I spend more time in the Character Creator than I do actually playing the game.  I'm trying to make a sexy elf for Cullen and having issues.

Elves are so hard and idk why. I can make an attractive human like this *snaps* but my elves always end up having something wrong when I start the game.

I have chapters with 7000+ words, but that is for a planned novel. But even for stuff I posted online I have some chapters along the lines of 5000 words.

It's more the content than the length that matters imo  ^_^

I managed to make a decent looking elf for Solas.  I could just recreate her, I suppose, but I wanted to make someone that looked different for Cullen XD

Omg she's striking! And she looks like she doesn't take sh*t from anybody x) I managed one for Solas too after like 5 tries. But I think I'm going to have to stick to humans, dwarves, and qunari after this

She is beautiful! I love her jawline, and the whole skintone-vallaslin-makeup combo is very harmonious.

Mmhm, that is something I always do. I think what is just being a little odd is the fact that I am writing in the POV of two different characters. One being a known god*which people seem to think has a set personality* and my Lavellan.

Well hello there is Miss Arti R.R Martin, lol! I have a feeling your novel would probably be even longer than some of his books.

I agree! I just know that some readers don't appreciate content that makes the story so long. FF.net...is not a good place for testing out the waters, lol.

I love that vallaslin! I use it for nearly all of my Lavellans...since I don't care for the other vallaslin.

At the moment, I'm looking up sliders on reddit for some inspiration at least.  I take CC more seriously than I probably should (in any game that has it!) XD

When I'm writing, I aim for between 6 to 8,000 words for a first draft chapter. That gives me plenty of room to either add to or take away from that first draft in later revision work.

Usually, it's closer to 6,000, but when the words are flowing, it can push that envelope of 8,000 or even more.

I agree, absolutely. But for a fanfic, trying to get readers hooked, there's a risk of losing interest with a long first chapter, especially if it isn't action based. But my suggestion was definitely too low if the chapter doesn't do what she wants it to; the content is important.

LOL!!! Nooo don't compare me to him; his writing is so bad >.>

Honestly 5000 words is not a lot. Not for, say, a 20-chapter fic. And, again, it's not the length but the quality of your content that will turn readers away. Plus, you know... you should never write for the readers. Write for yourself :) Write a story you enjoy, and other people will enjoy it, too. I posted my original fic with those loooong chapters :P on fictionpress.net (sister site to fanfiction.net) and have 74 reviews and 156 faves, and this is from people randomly finding the fic using tags (so it's not like I had a ready fanbase). Which is not to brag "Oh ho ho my writing is so fancy and brings all the readers to my yard" but just to say that my long chapters never hurt me.

Oh, my, you're setting yourself an interesting challenge! I look forward to reading this.

CuriousArtemis is probably a better person for advice on this, but the best judge of whether it's the right length is whether it's conveying what you want it to. My background as a copy editor tends to make me pare words to get the most effect with the fewest words, which isn't necessarily good for fiction either.

If this helps visualize how long my story is...as of this moment it is five pages in MS Word. I don't know how large that means it will be when posted to AO3...but it seems like it wouldn't be too long.

Tell me about the editing thing. I live for being able to flex my muscles and actually add words to things for a change. It's so different than work where I'm cutting away the deadwood.

Oh wow, just saw this. You know what's funny; I did something similar in that same original fic I was just talking about it and it was something that one or two reviewers brought up. They found it jarring when I switched point of view lol In retrospect, they were right. Ugh it's obviously not something I'm good at. I even tried it for another (now abandoned) writing project; was going to switch point-of-views every other chapter between the prince and princess character, and I couldn't get past chapter two.

I wish you much better luck!

....Although now that I think about it my Cullen x Lavellan fics are each told from the other character's point of view. I think that one worked out. To some degree.

This is almost 2500 words on AO3 and is 6 1/2 pages in Word: http://archiveofouro...g/works/1365421 EDIT: Single-spaced, 12 point TNR font.
