It would have to be done in a way that they'd also be buddy buddy with whoever the protagonist is too even if not romanced. Like Varric. Someone totally unsuspecting. Someone that the very deed would go against the whole moral fiber of their being. Omg I'm getting inspired. I need to write something like this now lol.

Just as long as it doesn't involve them making a heroic sacrifice to save the protagonists' life and then the protagonist encounters them later and finds out they staged the whole thing. I can't remember which book it was that is giving me these memories of betrayal but I should really find it and read it again because it's clearly got to me

I'm probably slightly bitter about the bit in ME3 where a FemShep who romanced Kaidan but switched to a different LI in ME2 has essentially the choice of "I cheated on you, I'm sorry" or an unsuccessful lie attempt. There's no option for "you were being an a-hole" or "I thought we'd split up because, angst?!"

I'm pretty sure I got the chance to shut Kaidan up at the hospital. You could be apologetic, try to lie, or be like "you really shut me down on Horizon so f-you."

Bioware has almost gone there in two games I've played - Bishop in NWN2 and Lord Scourge in The Old Republic. From what I've read, both of them were supposed to have been romances but they were both cut pre-release. Both have dialog that would definitely fit a romance so you can see where it would have been in-game. And they both were such bamf...good grief...if only.

There is a great mod out there that does let you romance Bishop in NWN2 as well as in the expansion Mask of the Betrayer. I played the game vanilla once and then always used the mod afterward...cuz Casavir? Yeah no thanks. +

And if you don't know who Sourge is - he's a Sith Lord...so can you imagine a Jedi Knight involved with a Sith Lord? I totally could...  :D

*dreamy stare* Yesssssss please. Why do I want these romances so much? I totally goof off to the idea of them. I am such a masochist.

OMG I totally head-canon'd that my JK dumped Doc for Scourge. It made perfect sense since she was dark-side and jaded with The Order. She really had nothing in common with Doc anymore. But Scourge on the other hand...

There is a massively wonderful fanfic out there between the JK and Scourge. It was fantabulous.

The lying line is a bit weird- "I didn't cheat on you."  What if Shepard didn't consider it as cheating?  Horizon seemed pretty final, vague letter or not.

Bishop will always be for me "the one that got away" lol

That mod you mentioned was indeed awesome, game saver I'd say.

I even started modding because of Casavir, so he would switch sides on the final battle and give me the joy of killing him lol oh, the hate ...

NWN2 was made by Obsidian not Bioware. People make that mistake often enough that I'm not surprised by it anymore. Anyway yes the ranger Bishop was intended to be a romance but the crew at Obsidian hate writing romances. There's a rather infamous quote by J. E. Sawyer that I probably can't find now that I want it that explains Obsidian's views on game romances and why they always tend to less then ideal.

And from what I've been able to gather Casavir and Bishop were the intended romances for female PC's and Elanee and Neeshka were meant for male PC's. Only Casvair and Elanee's romances are in the game (if they could even be called that)

Obsidian did at least redeems themselves with the romances in MotB but it was a new writing team and Sawyer had nothing to do with it thank god. Don't mind me.

Yeah, when I heard that line the fan came up with about going to her side, I thought it was such a good line that it made me consider changing my world state for a while, just for the poetic justice of it - she died in a tragic sacrifice, he died in another tragic sacrifice, but at least their souls will be reunited again. It was such fitting closure to their ill-fated love. Sigh, it's unbelievable that one fan can do something so beautiful with this world state with one single line, but the game can't even be bothered to acknowlege it.

Remember that one time you said you could write 3,000 words on the decisions you made for your canon Warden? I totally want you to write that.

Yup. You could apologize if you wanted to, you could do the equivalent of "we were on a break"... or you could try to lie and get called out on it.

Spoiler

Also, it's interesting to notice how people always gripe about Kaidan accusing you of cheating, but he never actually does that. He just asks if had you anything with [insert other LI]. You can go that whole conversation without anyone talking about cheating, and make up with him peacefully. The only time "cheating" comes up is when you use that word, trying to lie your way out of it.

I prefer to stay with him through ME2, in any case. The portrait scene alone before the suicide mission is worth going through the game without a romance, and to see their relationship survive all that Cerberus crap and come back stronger than ever in ME3 is amazing.

My bad, I had thought Bioware had a hand in the game.

Either way, there is some excellent fanfic out there featuring Bishop!

He actually does use the word cheating.  During the "date"/friendship lunch/whatever he'll say, "I understand why you cheated, but I still love you."

Multi-quoting because I'm so glad I'm not the only person who feels this way about Bishop! I still headcanon that there was more going on than whatever innuendos Bishop threw your way, and I think he threw them your way because of the other stuff going on.

Wasn't the voice different in the Bishop romance mod? I think I remember trying it and it just didn't quite feel the same because the voice was really what got me about his character. It was similar enough, but even in MoTB they used a different VA for some reason, and it just wasn't Bishop. Besides, I think Gann was actually my favorite LI in NWN2.

He didn't on my test playthrough where I had a thing with Thane. But I made peace with him through one of the non-lying lines, so there was never any talk of cheating between them. Maybe that makes a difference?

He did for my playthroughs where my Shepard moved on with Thane and Garrus.  I never used the lying line, either.

Yes, the voice was different, but the person who made it really tried. I think the writer did do a good job keeping Bishop's personality, but the voice just wasn't the same. I can look past the changing voice because...Bishop...  :D

Gann did absolutely nothing for me. I played the game through with the Bishop mod and it was all over.
