We are trying to steal the ashes, just as we approach them, the explosion happens and we fall face first into them sucking in a huge mouthful. That somehow forces us to be pulled into the fade, where we travel through a space time, dimensional vortex, wormhole thingy to be spat out outside where Cassandra is waiting. 

That's the only reason I can think of a qunari or an elf being there...

well Cassandra says you walked out of the Fade, but doesn't mention you walking into it (of course all witnesses are dead!)

So maybe the tear picks you up somewhere else and then spits you out again.

Could we have been trapped in the fade at a different time, maybe? Sort of a Javic thing?

Edit - I'd kind of like the idea if maybe we head up the Inquisition because we were the last Inquisitor before we mysteriously vanished Warden style and we are rebuilding OUR former organisation.

But it makes me wonder how we got in there in the first place. Maybe we just got swallowed up by the tear somehow and then got spat back out?

A Dalish servant?!?! I don't think so.

Well considering an elven PC is Dalish, I doubt we'd be there as a servant. The only thing I could think of is we've been taken captive by some of the Templars, which could also work for the qunari Inquisitor.

Hmmmm....that's an interesting thought. Makes you wonder if it ties into the eluvian thing, especially with what happened to Tamlen in DAO's Dalish Elf Origin and Morrigan in the "Witch Hunt" DLC

That might work if you're a mage, but for a warrior or rogue?

I'm still going for dramatic return of the ancient hero from the past trapped in the the fade until mount lyrium blows up spectacularly and NO ONE can stop me....mwhahahaha!

We're still heathens and a possible threat. Though I must admit, with the split, it's still unlikely they'd take prisoners. Whether just for imprisoning and executing later, or to make them Tranquil, it'd probably just be a stab on sight situation.

yeah this is true.....but I would wonder why they would bring a prisoner to a summit at all, unless they found us on the way.

Just rewatched the trailer, (really wish they could have made a female version too), for any more clues. The only conclusion I came to is that we won't have that armour at that point. Seems weird to wear Inquisition armour before it's been reformed.

Indeed. It's probably just equipped to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

yeah, something like that maybe. Being knocked unconscious before the blast and only waking just before walking out. Which could explain how you have no knowledge about how you survived.
