It seems it's too late now as you're already doing/done the ball, but... it is possible to finish Perseverance and start Cullen's romance, all before Wicked Hearts. I did this on my current playthrough, finshed all his lyrium arc, started the romance, and still got his dance at the ball. You just need to complete the Abyss quest first to trigger his personal quest.
Whether it's worth it... in practical terms, all that happens differently is that he says "You're the Inquisitor... and you haven't always seen me at my best" in the kiss scene. And some of the flirts you get during his quest sound more intimate than if you're already romancing him, weird as that sounds (like the way you touch his chest when you first tell him to stay off lyrium - it's an incredibly intimate touch for someone who's supposedly just a friend at that point, and Cullen's surprised look at the touch makes more sense).
The only real difference is the perceived sense of progression from a friendship to a relationship, though. Like someone else mentioned, it feels less like dating a cute guy and suddenly finding out he's a drug addict, and more like helping a friend through a drug problem and later finding out you're in love with him. It makes the romance pace out slower, so you're not just falling into his bed the second you get to Skyhold, and it makes your involvement have a more solid basis - he initially tells you about his addiction in a very professional tone, but you help him out through it as a friend, and each time you flirt with him through his quests the way he looks at the Inquisitor less like the Inquisitor and more like [your name] is more and more... it feels like you can see him really falling in love with her throughout this process. Whereas starting the romance without this quest, I did wonder where did his feelings for you suddenly come from - you can headcanon that it happened at some point in Haven or through the journey to Skyhold, but it felt more fulfilling to see it happening on screen as you help through his most personal issue.
And it does change the tone of his objection in the kiss scene, of his hesitation to advance your blatant flirting into more than that. It's not just your rank, he's not just thinking "oh it's Inquisitor" - he's embarrassed to have let you see him with his guard down, he's keeping some distance because he's worried that it may have changed your opinion of him. It makes the scene a little sweeter when you're like, yeah yeah you big goofball just kiss me now.
So whether it's worth it or not depends on what you particularly enjoy for storytelling, and how you prefer to see the relationship play out. I personally liked doing Perseverance first better a lot better, felt it made the romance more solid, but some people will prefer to go through that after the relationship is already established. But you definitely don't have to miss the ball for it - just do Abyss first, and you're gold.
Thanks for the insight. My problem was that I like doing Abyss after Wicked Hearts. I loved the tension of going into that battle while already being in the relationship. As such, I forwent the Halamshiral dance scene. I think I might actually be ok with not getting the dance scene with him. I really don't think it would fit my current quizzie. I think going into that quest "still friends" works for her since she's still battling with her potential feelings for him. I only wish I knew that you could delay those early flirts and conversations! I was worried they would become unavailable after getting to Skyhold. It's actually making me contemplate going way back with her, but that would be like 20+hrs... ![]()
Maybe I'll just remember that for next time, lol
Next time though, I will do the order you mentioned above.
D'aww, that is adorable! I don't see that Quizzy would have had much time for dancing anyway, what with all the shameless looting of the palace important investigative work she had to do. (Rogues, right? Can't take us anywhere.)
I saved all the dragon webbing and scale for Dorian because he looks great in orange. Also my quizzie is a human noble who takes fashion as serious as Vivienne does. "My boyfriend has to be the best dresser on the battlefield!"
I put all the dragon webbing on Solas. I think he is mad at me.... ![]()

This is what I'm trying to see on this current PT. Thanks a lot for the insight ![]()
He definitely worths the wait to make the relationship goes from Colleagues - Friend - Lover ![]()
I don't read a lot of fan-fiction. I have looked at a few and truthfully some of them have scared me with the stuff they put Cullen through.
Maybe I just don't like the angst. lol Or how they portray him. I guess I don't see him as weak as others do.
But to each their own.
You and me both. I'm not an angst person - yes, some struggle, problems, etc., but I like things to work out most of the time. And I like to see the amount of bad things that happen to someone kept to a reasonable amount. I prefer somewhere between silly and obsessed with trivialities and tragic-fatalistic-there-is-no-hope kind of works.
But I have to read first hand accounts of real life things that happen to real people on a daily basis, so reading and gaming are my escape from that. My daughters on the other hand seem to love a lot of the stuff I don't like, mostly at the dark end. ![]()

One word: teenagers
Noble suffering is soo romantic
Funny thing is, even the Cullen romance is not quite free of it, with unfinished sentences, and the ever dramatic "I can't..."
I am always tempted to add "even" afterwards
But, I prefer a happy ending as well. Which is why I simply cannot make myself go through the Solas romance
Knowing Bioware, however, something will come up in later games to tear the Quizzy and Cullen apart...
Yup, they are going to back to their former life. Varric to Kirkwall, Dorian to Tevinter etc but everyone on my PT just say "we're going to hang out here a little while longer", even Leliana (Divine).
I haven't been there yet... going to start Adamant soon...
From what I heard,
Spoiler
Personally, if this is the case... well. It's not the same thing
1. to start a relationship with someone, then discovering that he has problems due to his past & decided to stay with him no matter what
2. help him deal with his problems as friends, then starting the relationship knowing fully what he is currently living through.
Subtle difference apparently, but my personal interpretation's change a lot.
Does anyone know if there is a video that shows that part that under the spoiler? I already started the romance before Perseverance, but am really curious to see the difference in dialogue.
EDIT: ok, nevermind, I think I have actually seen it. Now that it was mentioned the new line of dialogue is "you haven't always seen me at my best" I think I saw a video of their first kiss where he says that. Tried to find it again to post it here, but can't seem to.

Except they're in their mid-20s
I actually like the Solas romance, because
Though I'm not sure I'll be able to romance him more than once.

If you do find it, I'd love to see it posted. I think that's one of the few variations I haven't seen yet.

Yes, I would love to see this too. I would do this on my second playthrough, but can't stand the thought of not dancing with Cullen.
I have Alistair as a Grey Warden this playthrough and want to see if I can trigger a conversation between him and Morrigan this go around. I had originally planned to do a Solas romance for this second playthough, but my first playthrough was bugged-rogue Hawke being a warrior(which was fine and ended up coming in handy during Adamant) and never was able to trigger Dorian's personal quest so am redoing.
Two things I noticed this playthrough is that I can't get Scattered in Skyhold to trigger---I remember getting it early on in the library on the floor where Dorian is, but the questgiver is nowhere to be found. The second thing I noticed is that before when I asked Varric for his thoughts on the Inquisition he stated that Cullen reminded him of Aveline---now he says that Cullen needs more to do and has a lost puppydog look on his face-I romanced Cullen on my first playthrough and never got this line. Did anyone else get this?
Varric's comments are based on how often you use advisors for war table missions. If you don't use Cullen much you will get the lost puppy comment. If you use him a lot, you will get one that says he's been all smug and Lel will shank him if he's not careful.
What I'd like to know - can you ask Varric this question more than once?
Just wanted to share this with you guys in case you haven't heard it. "I am the One" is my favorite bard song in-game and I never realized it was on the original Dragon Age: Origins soundtrack:
I admit its been awhile since I've played DA:O but I'm fairly sure 'I am the one' plays as part of the end game credits if you let them run. ![]()

I will admit I'm not the best when it comes to watching end-game credits. Honestly the only time I can remember doing that was with the main-campaign for Guild Wars 2. I love love loved the song "Fear Not This Night:"

It's my favourite too! I remember in the past I tried to find translation from elven language. This song reeks of Solas to me...Just wanted to share this with you guys in case you haven't heard it. Ah, that it explains it then. I have been using Leliana and Josephine more this playthrough. On my 1st PT I was only able to ask it once, but for some reason on this playthrough, I can ask it several times.

Maybe I just don't like the angst. lol Or how they portray him.
And usually involving sex.
I still haven't given up my search for a normal Varric/Culen fanfic, where they meet after the explosion in the Conclave and, using his way with people and his natural friendly disposition, the dwarf ends up making the Commander loosen up and learning to be less of a workaholic.
You know, stories about normal people doing normal stuff. And not just sex sex sex oh gawd u're so hot f*** me oh yeah rawr
This entire time I'd thought of it as "the Solas song." I had no recollection of it. Of course, I haven't played DA:O in years and years.

Gotta say that a lot of fanfic I enjoy reading has sex sex sex in it. Maybe that's the perv in me or maybe I just enjoy a good smutty story now and again since I don't watch the pr0n. ![]()
I enjoy reading smut, but not watching pr0n...does that make sense? ![]()
*edit* Are you kidding me, this post has to be on top? Good grief! Cullen's reaction:
