My DA:O canon was to keep Alistair as a Warden so that he and my Amell Warden could stay together (I didn't wanna be a noble or a queen, or a mistress), plus at the time he was so sure that he didn't want to be King. I didn't feel like I had the right to make life altering decisions for him like that, and I don't harden him because I just find it kinda cruel changing a person for not being a tough bad ass. I also prefer how he talks about the Warden if they're not married... kinda felt like I was forcing him into wedlock the one time I rolled a Cousland Queen playthrough (i'm not keen on the idea of marriage myself either, and my Warden is supposed to be me).

Of course that WAS my canon until the bloody Abyss quest happened in DAI. Now Alistair is King, I'm a noble Cousland Queen, and I'm still bloody sulking about it. I hate having my canon forcibly shat all over. I suppose the silver lining is Cullen can't pine after my Amell for effin years anymore now she doesn't exist! XD

 

Alistair is king in all of my DAO playthroughs, but I actually made a new one up in the Keep with a (romanced) Warden Alistair. I'd been wanting to try out a DA2 playthrough with a Hawke that was absolutely awful to everyone, but never got around to it, so I made those choices for the Warden Alistair import. The choice shouldn't be too hard.

 

Using my canon import for DAI resulted in this choice for the Abyss quest:

Ended up staring at the screen for a long while, cause I liked how Loghain's character had turned out in DAI. Not as difficult as choosing between a romanced Alistair and a Hawke that you're attached to, of course, but it did leave me feeling very sad in the end.

I always figured that until they were all safely in their tents with the Inquisitor back with the group he hadn't had time to process the events that unfolded beyond survival. I imagine him standing guard that evening unable to sleep as his mind goes over everything that unfolded, which is when it really hits him that she almost died, he then keeps replaying and thinking about it over and over during the pilgrimage to Skyhold, the more he thinks about it the more he just wants to scoop her up in his arms and lay kisses all over her.

I like that! Replaying bad scenarios in his head definitely sounds like something he would do. Thank you for relaying what Brianne said to us, by the way

 

I really like her version of Cullen's canon and it fits what I've envisioned as well. Since I personally feel like Cullen has commitment in mind when considering relationships I figure he isn't one to fall in love at first sight. He's very sharp and professional around the Inquisitor when you first meet, and only after working with you for several weeks(months?) at Haven does he begins to see more and more of your virtuous qualities. Then, finally, he nearly loses you at Haven - that's when it really hits him how much he'd have missed you. I just love how his romance is paced that way - it's slow, sweet, careful yet deliberate.

And for people like me who also like AmellxCullen it makes me happy to think that his infatuation for Amell developed slowly the same way. LOL. I imagine he was completely prepared to do his job after being placed in Kinloch. He probably met Amell when he was first being introduced by Greagor to the First Enchanter (since Amell was Irving's favorite apprentice) and didn't think anything of it until he saw her living her daily life in the Circle over time. Saw her befriending and helping poor Jowan with his studies because he was bad at magic, saw her trying to help the others around her only to be rejected because they were jealous of her talents, saw her unassumingly trying to connect with even the Templars watching over her. Saw her strength of will. I imagine he wanted so badly to have faith in her for the same reason Irving trusted her enough to want to set her free to the Wardens.

 

And then, after everything that happens in Kirkwall, he realizes that the only person who never let him down was her, she who stayed true to herself and used her gifts and strength of will to save lives, who lives/lived doing what he'd always wanted to do - protecting others.

Yeah, "What's going on here?" turns into "WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?!!!!!" I always found that really odd, but I figured the line switch was done so that we wouldn't be able to guess just how bad the event occurring was until we got our memories back.

I think they changed it to the "WHATS GOING ON HERE" for dramatic reasons. It wouldn't have worked the first time when we didn't even knew what was actually happening

I agree for the most part, but how would that work with an IQ that becomes a templar? In the case of the IQ I just created last night, she spent her life preparing to join The Order (being the youngest Trevelyan). She is willing to make the sacrifices necessary to further the goals of the Inquisition (you can even have this discussion with Cullen in-game). And, as she will conscript the mages, she feels that templars are needed (they are). So, she ends up getting addicted to lyrium herself, and chooses that knowing up front what will happen. However, she firmly believes there has to be a safer way. I think it's a bit different to ask Cullen to wait a little longer to break the leash in this case. And when the time comes, they will have each other for support. It wouldn't be the case of not being his rock, or his sponge. 
 
ANYWAYS, I haven't really even started this playthrough yet, but I want to give it a shot to see how things feel. Every other time I play the game, I certainly do tell him that he is strong enough to stay clean.

That is all perfectly fine. But it's also made pretty clear that Cullen does NOT want to return to taking lyrium, but will do so if you order him. In that case, it's not really his choice, it's yours. So I don't really feel that there is a conflict between becoming a templar yourself while still supporting Cullen in his efforts to stay on the lyrium wagon.


Did anyone do the whole templar thing? Whether romance or non, I'm curious as to how Cullen reacts (I need to post an ask in the Dorian thread as well, since he's my boyfriend for my male warrior.) After talking to the warrior trainers I did tell him "I'm thinking about becoming a templar," to which he merely asked why I would want to and cautioned that I be absolutely sure that this was a path I wanted to pursue. I haven't done it though, going with champion instead. My Trevelyan Inquisitor, despite his upbringing, was pretty affected by Cullen's struggles and doesn't have any desire to shackle himself to lyrium, regardless of his faith.

If he's not romanced, he's grumpy and doesn't want to talk about it. If he is romanced, he doesn't like the idea of it too much, but he's still vey gentle and... supportive is not the right word of course, but he respects that she can make her own decisions.

 

There's a better video of it somewhere out there where the Inquisitor uses the gentler line rather than the bratty one and he sounds kinder on the whole thing, but his response is more or less this:

Oh no no no no no no no no no no, lol! I don't if you know what Final Fantasy 13 is or what the story is, but if your idea about having both the IQ and Solas sacrifice themselves for the greater good then it would be similar to what happened at the end of FFXIII. I highly suggest picking FF13, FF13-2, and FF13-Lightning Returns!

 

I loved FF13 and its sequels! So many cool and interesting characters. My favorite is still Snow, even though he gets his share of hate, too. But then, all the characters do. XD


 

I'll give Anders that, for all his faults when he told Hawke he'd been aching for her/him for years it was certainly hot!
C'mon Cullen, massage our Inquisitor's ego a little more would ya!

I agree that he probably still wishes she hadn't made the choice, but accepts that it was her decision and does want her to do what's right for her.

The war table mission you get from Ser afterwards is also interesting.

He basically asks you if you want to send him more people for training. Leliana's option is "Yes, we need all the Templars we can get", and Cullen's is "Don't do it, they wouldn't know what they're getting themselves into". When you take Cullen's option and decline, the response from Ser is basically "You understand. Your training is now complete".

So that makes me think that warning others away from Templar life is something that's normal for Templars to do. Obviously, since they know exactly the sacrifices required. And if someone still wants to in spite of it, then it'll be the right decision. Or something to that effect. Geh, I feel like I could explain it better but my words are failing me.
