I would not believe everything you read here. That "article" reads like an essay written by one of my freshmen. Spelling errors, grammatical errors, sentence structure errors... it's appalling. It literally looks like a high school student wrote that for a project.

Sadly, many rely on spell check, which doesn't inform you that you used their instead of they're, or that you typed from when you mean form. Journalists today are a sad shadow of what once was.

True, but I'm pretty sure even spell check would've caught "fortesses."

I don't think that that's necessarily fair because the entire field has changed drastically sense "The good ole days". Now they have insane deadlines, are expected to get things out immediately and it's not just one article it's a mountain of them. The competition with other companies is fierce and it's about who gets it out first and not who has the best grammar. So in haste it's way easier to make mistakes. I don't think it's journalists that don't care for the news, it's the entire field has changed so much it can't be what it used to.

I was gonna say that too... and general word structure seems kinda awkward/blocky

NO -- if you have a degree in English (as you SHOULD) if you're a professional writer, you do not make these mistakes.

But I agree with what you said as far as the state of news reporting is concerned :P Traditional reporting is having to go up against Twitter, Facebook, and the like. And they just can't compete. All they can do is offer exclusive content to paid subscribers.

But they could compete if the print journalists would simply remember to put the 5 Ws in the first paragraph: who, what, when, where, why. I don't know how many articles I've read lately where I've gotten halfway through and still don't really know what's going on.

I thought they had degrees in journalism and not English. Weird! You learn something new everyday. Can someone give me a link to the offending article?

Well yes, she's an English teacher. I think everyone with a twitch needs therapy. (Kidding!)

Either would be a gateway degree into the general field of writing and editing (whether freelance or not). But a professional writer SHOULD have a degree in English (my opinion). Then maybe if you want you could double major. But (imo) the journalism stuff (like Bev's "who, what, where, when, why") can be learned on the job.
