It wouldn't be that bad if they cared for the Inq in some different way, but they're far too serious all the time and too concerned about the "greater things".
I personally got the feeling that everyone, even our companions (and among them, even Sera) view the pc as something bigger than the person and never just as a person. Kinda what Varric once said. Friendship and romance is the only proof that pc is still alive, and not some odd being like Cole who only has a purpose and nothing more.
If it weren't for romances it would've been really cold. Everyone look at you as if you're a tool. Like it's just business.
That's only me impression though.
Different interpretations, I guess. By the end of the game with my main IQ, I felt like Blackwall, Sera and Dorian were true friends of my Inquisitor, ride or die. Cassandra felt like a sister, as close to my IQ as Aveline was to my Hawke or Wynne was to my Warden. Not all of them felt like super close friends, and with good reason, but then again nor did I ever feel in DAO or DA2 like every single companion was my character's best friend. Those that did feel like my Quizzie's friends, though, felt as true and deep friendships as those of my Warden's or my Hawke's. I wouldn't even know how to tell my IQ's story without those friendships in her life.
