I have very strong feelings on Anita's videos. I will try to keep it constructive, however
1. Despite claiming to be a gamer, that is untrue. In an earlier video she clearly states that she is not a fan of video games. Furthermore, she describes that going around shooting people would be "gross" for her. This is especially troubling, since many of the games she criticizes are FPS or TPS games.
2. She has made use of let's play videos from other youtubers without giving credit.
3. Several of the things that she criticizes as being unfair cliches for describing women, i.e. the use of a pink/red palette for female characters, the use of makeup, jewelry, she uses herself (eyeliner, lipstick, big brass earrings).
4. A disproportionate amount of the titles she criticizes are early, and therefore might not be the most suitable to characterize the state of things in gaming today.
5. A great number of the games on her list are Japanese in origin - a culture known to have very strong gender roles - and might therefore not be representative of the state of things in Western countries.
I also completely disagree with her labeling of Fem!Shep - a strong female lead, imho - as Miss Man, and an unoriginal or uninspired female lead. I could go on, but I think I'll work myself up
Taken together, I believe that Anita's videos are inaccurately portraying the status of female characters in video games. This is not to say that it is not an issue - we need more gender equality and strong female leads. For the sake of both female and male gamers. I am waiting for a less biased, and more systematic approach. As a scientist I cringe at her methodology in analyzing the subject.
