I was pretty happy with the way his lyrium story turned out, I guess because I'm too much of a sunshiney optimist and like to think that he's pioneering a new way of life for the Templar order as a whole. And that he'll succeed. I have too much faith in Cassandra's optimism about it to think things will turn out bad, haha.
While I do agree that I'd have liked to see more of his psychological progression from wanting to control mages to being okay with being around them (and being a nice person), I chalked that up to the offscreen 5 or so years of time he's had since the fall of Kirkwall's Circle to think about how Meredith's actions and beliefs got them to that point. I wasn't all that surprised that he left the Templars since he joined up because he thought it was the best way to protect people in the first place. While some Templars were righteous it's pretty clear that the Order as a whole has failed somewhat royally in that regard, LOL. And even if the Order is reformed for the better I can see him being happy with the new path the Maker's shown him instead of returning. I don't feel like he abandoned everything he stood for or anything - I rather think he's just trying to return to what he stood for.
