I'll agree on Sten and Morrigan.

I just have a hard time getting past the approval ratings/game mechanics. All you had to do to advance the "friendship" was give them gifts after doing whatever you did that ticked them off.

I suppose I should try to play the game without using gifts...that might make it more realistic.

I remember the very first time I played Origins. Had no idea you could even romance anyone.. the game had been a recommendation from a friend. Didn't know about the gift system, anything really. Then Alistair gave my warden a rose, and I sat there with the dumbest grin on my face.. was like OMG I can romance this beast? NOMNOMNOM

Compared to Anders, Fenris and Merrill's romance scenes... yeah, Varric's not great at writing romantic dialogue.

DISAGREE  Hawke x Fenris dialogue is perfect  :crying:  <3

Yeah, the Fallow Mire is only really worth it for rescuing soldiers and getting that funny scene of Morvan throwing the goat at Skyhold.

Was it just me, or did anyone else wish that there was more of a Dalish presence in the Emerald Graves and Exalted Plains? It was a shame that the clan we saw was pretty small compared to Marethari and Zathrian's, even though most of them were just NPC's walking around?

Yes, particularly since they mention the Dalish so much

Given the Orlesian Civil War, it made sense why the Dalish would make themselves scarce.

I think Inquisition's weakness is the lack of tie-ins to all the zones. I think it has a really strong story, but it's just way too short. Instead of getting to Skyhold and having ten zones open up, it would be nice to have a reason to go to those zones, like "you have to meet the Warden" and that's how you get to Crestwood. Instead it's just that yeah, the Empress is having a party and there's also weird stuff going on with the Wardens and suddenly there's suspicious activity in the Western Approach that desperately needs investigation!!!! What? Why do I care about unexplained suspicious activity if there's an assassination plot and blood magic going on?

Exactly! I couldn't figure out why I, the great Inquisitor (allegedly), was supposed to care about all these generic crap I was doing. Like can't we send some soldiers here to do this??

LOL it's easier as a dwarf or qunari. Although when I know there is a flirt line that isn't showing for me, I get all antsy......I'm being deprived!!!

I tried an elf for Solas, Cullen stole her. I tried an elf for Blackwall, Cullen stole her. Lol he's just too cheeky that boy.

I made a Qunari, knowing it was the only way Cullen could not hijack the romance. Still had the first and I believe second flirt. Then the conversation lines with the 'so you aren't really looking for anyone right now" came up, and I just couldn't move forward. Went back to my human. You have some amazing willpower if you can do a whole pt and romance someone besides Cullen :P

Seconded...

It's cause they made him all "perfect boyfriend"  I feel sick saying this, but I think I've come to the conclusion that Cullen is basically fanservice in DAI, and it really breaks my heart. So much potential wasted... such a shadow of a formerly amazing, rich, and complex character.

TBH I still feel him an amazing, rich & complex character

Oh gosh, yeah, that "clan" was a joke. Like I almost wish they hadn't even been there.

I can't quite put my finger on what it was I disliked so much about Hawke...she just seemed cold to me.  Her responses always seemed heartless. But would be interesting to see if the opinion differed across British versus non-British players.  An interesting idea...although I don't buy it is because we aren't uncomfortable with "everyman" tales.

My Hawke was...surprising in DAI, to say the least. He was rude and pretty damn hostile pretty much every time I talked to him. It was really quite startling, especially since my Hawke had always been diplomatic and kind.

Yeah, same. I guess we're just supposed to assume he's become bitter with age and also is just generally tense due to the situation. But I found it disheartening, plus it was hard to make him look like himself from DA2, and then there was no Fenris or any of his other friends (I don't think I took Varric), so at that point he didn't even feel like my Hawke anymore.

Yeah, same. Alistair was my friend. We both just happened to be Wardens, the last Wardens at that. And he didn't want to be the leader, so I resignedly stepped up. Morrigan became my friend. Wynne became my surrogate mother. Zevran was my lover. These were my family!

I get NONE of that from DAI. I felt close to no one. But perhaps that is what they were going for. Many times they emphasized how much choice the player would be given and how the player character was the head of the inquisition and an important person who would be making key decisions.

I had a vague sense that I wouldn't like the inquisitor and was kind of right; Hawke just spoiled me. Shepard, too. Even the Warden to some extent. Their stories were so contained, so personal.

I think it helped in DAO that the camp setting that gathers everyone together is such an intimate setting. Just a bunch of people hanging around a fire feels much more personal than a big keep with so many random NPCs running around. The same goes for Mass Effect with the Normandy. Even DA2 had it, to a certain degree - despite everyone being split up, you visited them in their homes which is very personal.

No! Only you, the Great and Powerful Inquisitor, can go picking up 500 stupid shards! So it is written!

This kinda bugged me too, if you can't tell.  ;)

Yeah, good point. The setting definitely contributed to the intimacy!

Here Lies the Abyss was probably my favorite of the major quest portions, post-In Your Heart Shall Burn. But my one caveat was how they had to write Hawke off as a means to oppose the other Warden (be it Alistair, Loghain, or Stroud). I wanted to smack Hawke half the time, cause he was being written as a friggin idiot.

Nah, there's a trick: I've already done one complete PT romancing him as soon as possible & keep all the save file.

Everytime I have Cullen Withdrawal, I switched to my other completed character and well...

Just to say, now I'm having a Love/Hate relationship with him. I keep wanting to make him suffer in fanfics & drawings...

That... That is an excellent idea! You sly little minx :D

As for making him suffer in fanfics and drawings... don't we all enjoy to make our men jump once in a while? Just for fun? :P

You sure he was properly set to "diplomatic" in the Keep? Because I thought my diplomatic Hawke was still pretty diplomatic. A bit bitter, perhaps, about the rebellion and especially Cory popping up again, but certainly not rude and hostile. O_o

When you remember how close Varric is to Isabela and Hawke, it does make sense that he'd perfectly nail their rough and tumble tryst, coupled with how their subsequent conversation dealt with their feelings about it... it definitely seemed the most natural conversation out of all of them.

(And I didn't intend for all the double entendres there, they just happened)

Compared to Anders, Fenris and Merrill's romance scenes... yeah, Varric's not great at writing romantic dialogue.

Well, there was one banter I completely missed, but apparently Varric does ask Anders about the romance. Once Anders refuses to talk, however, Varric says something on the lines that if he's not given the info, he'll just make it up. Apparently, he totally did... Anders romance dialogues are plain awful... :P

LOL I did that at first, got her to skyhold and I had no way of telling Cullen I was glad he made it out alive, so she got deleted.  My second one made it a little farther. Started a romance with Bull and I felt really guilty, Cullen was all forlorn and missing some loving so I deleted her and made someone just for him. My elves for Solas and Blackwall really didn't make it past the first flirt with him, they had to have him. I am currently trying a dwarf for Blackwall, it's slow cause I have to keep going back to Cullen. My willpower fails me ;)

For me it only lacked main missions. I wanted to clear an area do main mission associated with it, rinse and repeat. So you had to complete exalted plains for example before wicked eyes.

I liked crestwood cause I felt what I did there really made a difference.

Personally  I never understood the need to complete “Perserverence” then have your Inquisitor then openly admit their feelings towards Cullen.  For a few bits of different dialgoue? He says pretty much the same line in the kiss after this quest as if you were in a romance with him to begin with.

I am not disagree with how people chose to play their game-it is their game after all.

As soon as I arrive at Skyhold, I simply draw out the build-up to the romance, but way before marching to Adamant.

Waiting to romance him is fine, but waiting so long into the game, yeah that is a head scratcher for me. Perhaps its based on my real life “Get it done” additude. <Shrugs>

Anyways...

I found this Cullen colaberation. I will say Cullen looks damn fine in DAI.

Yeah, you know, my protemplar Hawke was unrecognizable in a different way, for me. I felt like she'd spent too much time with Meredith. Every other subclause, "blood magic."   "I don't know what we're doing here in the Fade, but it must be blood magic. Did you look around for blood mages? I've seen a lot of blood mages in my time. Oh, can you pass the salt? I used to pass the salt back in Kirkwall where there were blood mages." ^_^

edit for ToP:

Hawke and Cullen and BLOOD MAGIC!
