Man this thread moves fast!

Master Dennet got more than an eyeful!

I love how in MD's playthrough, she noticed how Dennet kept interrupting all of the romance scenes with Blackwall like a complete and utter perv.

NOT NOW COLE!

I've said it before, I'll say it again, how funny would it have been if Cole had pulled a River Tam / Ceiling Cat during Cullen's romance scene?

Spoiler

Awesome! But then again, ever since I found out about Solas I've been hoping he'd wind up being the next Big Bad. Heh. Big Bad Wolf.

With how big a geeks our writers are, we need to get them to include some Bad Wolf grafitti in future DLC.

Wouldn't it be heartbreaking if even after Solas resets things everyone was all still born but with vastly different lives and at the end we'd get to see all the past characters in a massive cutscene going about whatever their alternative lives turned out like, and like maybe the Inquisitor/protagonist and his/her love interest from whichever game happen to walk past each other, they stop and look at each other as if they feel like they've met and then just continue on walking...

... Did I just describe the ending to Butterfly Effect?

I kinda preferred the Director's Cut ending, where he killed himself in utero to wipe out his entire timeline, thus preventing any of the calamities that happened as a result of him being in existence. That version revealed that his mother had two previous pregnancies boys (both boys) that ended the same way, suggesting that they too suffered from random time travel and ultimately decided to retgone themselves like Evan did. It was a far bittersweet ending than the theatrical one, especially the other ending where he goes to follow her, showing that Evan didn't learn anything from his experience.

And tying that back into Solas, how bittersweet and tragic would it be if at the end, to bring back the other Gods and restore what was lost, he had to do what Alexius tried with the Inquisitor and remove himself from the timeline, thus undoing all of the mistakes he made and the problems that he caused? Plus if he romanced Lavellan... the feels would be off the charts.

Well she, like Tuvok, was married, and I think even after seven years the thought of being with another person was hard.

Nah, Janeway was just engaged to be married. That's why he was able to get remarried to someone else without any fuss, a year or two before the Doc managed to contact them and tell them they were all still alive.

I see, that makes sense. I ask because I actually enjoy reading through your reasonings, it's well thought out and not handwavy. I may not completely agree with the conclusion, but I respect the reasoning behind it. My actual issues with the Solas romance are beside the point anyway, I was just wondering at that bit because it really stood out how similar it sounded to how I feel about Solas in general (not just his romance), but it's rare to see him called out on it to the extent that other characters get called out for much less, so... it makes you wonder.

In any case! Maker, please don't base your expectations of the Blackwall romance on my stanning for him, you're going to come out on the other side disliking him even more and putting the blame on me! I personally got a lot of nuance and tone from his romance, as you know -in many ways I found his a better developed romance than Cullen, even though Cullen's is still by far my favorite romance in the game- but Blackwall is definitely not a character to identify with or a romance to respond to in the same way for everyone. I'll stan him and Sera and their romances to the death, but I fully acknowledge that they can be... acquired tastes :P and sometimes things just don't click.

And I usually feel the same about what you have to say; we tend to approach things from opposite directions a lot of the time, but you have reasons for your views that I respect even when we disagree. And sometimes it takes me a while (even weeks) to work out exactly why something bothers me.

Oh, I'm not going into Blackwall's with any particular expectations. The thing is, he's always been the one who appealed to me most, but I have strong feelings about liars (second chances, sure, but there'd definitely be a couple of "come-to-meeting" discussions, and a "why didn't you trust me?" discussion and I'd have liked to have seen at least one of those take place privately in her rooms later.) I have no problems with Sera's, it just doesn't particularly grab me. :P

So, since I'm pretty hazy on my elven lore, are the ancient elves dead dead, or just Uthenera dead? I'd kind of assumed that Solas was in a state of Uthenera when he was woken, though I have no idea what woke him.

This is supposed to be Gaspard, from his Tarot card.

Gaspard_de_Chalons_tarot.png

So he's Teddy Roosevelt. ;)

tl;dr all it means is we're not getting another Awakening for DAI, but we'll get stuff in the scope of Legacy/MotA eventually.

They did? I might have to cry now. I have no idea how any of this with Solas gets wrapped up in a DLC unless it's a super crappy one. So maybe the Fen'Harel thing gets touched on and he's in DA4.

Ha, awhile back I made the same comparison of Solas being similar to Blackwall in the Solas thread and I got some very... ahem... strong reactions from a few fans defending Solas.  Now they're great people over in that thread and it's generally as pleasant there as it is here, but yeah, I agree.

Gah, I hate work!  I miss all the good stuff!  I LOVE Janeway...she can rock an onion bun like its nobody's business!!!  And her fiance was so hot and I was so sad for her and she missed him and her dogs...and then he  got remarried...ugg, the angst!!!  One of my all-time favorite characters.  I loved that we had a Janeway-esque outfit in ME for Shephard!

Since we're talking about Blackwall, I was a little disappointed when I brought him to the Temple of Mythal.  I read a rumor that he had a strong reaction when seeing Corypheus take the body of a Grey Warden, but it didn't happen.  He makes a comment about it afterwards in Skyhold, but I was hoping to see him react right there to what could have happened.

The most interesting comments I got at the Temple of Mythal (after those from Solas of course) were actually from Cassandra, Sera and Dorian. Cassandra shows a rather ugly side of herself, in how dismissive she is of elven religion and culture, that may not quite register otherwise throughout the game -I mean of course you know she's fiercely Andrastian, but Cullen is also fiercely Andrastian to the core of his being and he never calls elven religion "nonsense" as she does- and it can become an interesting roleplaying point, whether your character is Dalish and faithful to the old gods or human and also very Andrastian like her. Sera is... Sera, you can take her or leave her, but this is a pretty good moment of development for her character (albeit in a direction most people will hate her even more for *sadface*).

And then there's Dorian, who goes through the entire Temple repeatedly apologizing for existing while Tevinter inside an ancient elven ruin, trying very carefully to not breathe too hard around anything because Maker forbid another Tevinter goes down in history as desecrating ancient elven culture, and then when you meet Abelas and hear this other side of the story, Dorian is like... tripping balls on the shock of it. It's such an important moment for his character that makes it like he almost should be there in canon regardless of whether you take him on the mission or not (like Varric and Anders were canonically at Vinmark whether you took them along in Legacy or not) - he needs to be present for that mind blow at the Temple as much as Cass just needs to be in the Fade when you meet not-Justinia, for measure.

OMG...I need to take Cassandra and Dorian on this quest!!!  I missed all kinds of good stuff!

Seriously, I love Dorian to bits.  When he says that line "It was us all along...we destroyed the world" (or something like that...about Tevinter), it is really heartbreaking.  The actor nails it!  I can never be mean to him...

Oh, and just wanted to comment, that I really enjoy your posts ninetozero...because you almost always have a completely different take on things than me, which is great!  So many times I read your posts and am like..."huh...I never really though of it like that."  And I iwll ponder it for a few days.  Seriously, it has made me go back to the game to try new things. I am tempted to name a quizzie after you and roleplay it as "how would ninetozero approach this situation?"  :P

I hope this comes off as complimentary...I am exhausted...  But seriously, the stuff you post about templars is always very well thought out and appreciated...

OK, enough fan-girling...Ima gonna play!!!

I do agree, it definitely a ton more time and word count invested in the fallout of the relationship, not just the buildup. It occurred me that Blackwall's all-buildup-little-payoff romance arc is the exact opposite of Cullen's - which is sorely lacking in buildup, but does the payoff so well.

We were just talking this yesterday, yeah, but with the amount of writing, depth and proper development that was is not in the game for pretty much every romance and needs to be relegated to meta discussion and personal interpretation, Dragon Age: Inquisition might as well have been called Dragon Age: Headcanons. :P

Yeah, Cass surprised me there. You know that Sera would be dismissive and insensitive to it all, but hearing that from Cassandra was kind of a shock.

And you're right, even talking to Cullen after meeting Flemythal and mentioning "I met a God, or someone who claimed to be one" doesn't cause him to become offended, as he respects your beliefs, even if they are not necessarily his own. The most he says is how he doesn't let such things cause him to doubt his own faith in the Maker, which is actually fairly tolerant for Cullen to admit as a devout Andrastian.

Even Mother Giselle isn't willing to go that far, picking and chosing the parts of Corypheus' story that support the Chantry's version of events, while completely dismissing the parts of the story that contradict it completely as being lies that he's telling us and himself? And also how she seems to dislike Dorian and want him gone from the Inquisition, just because he's a Mage from Tevinter, who follows a different sect of Andrastianism.

I wouldn't mind if they did two sequential big DLCs, like Bioshock Infinite did with Burial at Sea.

Burial at Sea was probably the saddest thing in existence... especially because I never really cared all that much for Jack as much as I did for Elizabeth, so having her suffer as she does and then have her story ultimately end up being just the set up and prologue of Jack's adventure, was both heartbreaking and a tad cheap.

A question for anyone who might know about how the Voice Acting happens in DA games: I heard that Greg Ellis doesn't even know who Cullen is while voicing him, he just get random lines not in order. Is this true?

How can he put so much appropriate emotion if he doesn't even know who the character is?

Just wondering...

Most of the time voice actors get a brief description of a scene and what sort of emotion they are going for/what the character is generally thinking and that's what they have to go off of. Also, there's a lot of "do like you feel x" "ok now if you were thinking y". That's honestly a big part of what makes being a VA for a video game difficult.

LOL that is hilarious, but very flattering, thank you. My approach to the games is not particularly unique (I could point to a hundred threads about any topic with people expressing points of view I share much more eloquently than I could), it's just a bit off-field in this fandom. I have very little interest in magic, the Fade, spirits, gods, deities etc for starters, generally the mystical aspect of fantasy that's most celebrated in the fandom (with good reason, because the games are largely about that) - my focus is more on the politics of the world, the military, warfare and religious organizations, the history and anthropology of Thedas, the different social structures from the Orlesian Game, to the symbiotic relationship between the casteless and the Legion, to alienage inside politics, to the various criminal or legally criminal organizations, etc, so my approach to both choices in the games or meta discussion are usually colored by that. Ask me what Flemythal is or what Solas' plans are and time travel and the energies of the Fade etc and I'll give you a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - but ask me why Lambert and Samson weren't wrong, or why Celene is not the Empress Orlais needs but the one it deserves, or why Cailan was the best ruler Ferelden had in recent history and I'll go at it for days. :P

In any case, I can always share my canon world state at the Keep so you can look at my choices and either try a similar playthrough working out how one comes to such disparate conclusions from the premises the game gives you, or make a drinking game out of figuring out where the hell did I even pull the logic behind this or that decision from. ;)
