A question, does anyone have the exact quote of Cole's line about Cullen? Something that starts like
"The little bottles shake him, but he tests the chains"
So I am playing through a world state that has Alistair as a Warden, and OMG
I love how he sounds
He visibly matured, it's incredible
I really miss Steve Valentine... Hope you won't mind my fangirl outburst
And here is a troubled Ali for ya:
Ah i am so sad I didn't do this the first time around. I miss Ali
I feel like that's kinda why I romanced Cullen at first for the little Origins feels. I am, however, definitely going to replay Origins and let Alistair stay with the wardens then update my keep. Does anyone else feel the need to replay something before updating it in the keep? Or am I alone in this quirk lol...
gahh I just did the templar quest

Wait, no, when does this happen? I did the envy quest my last pt and didn't see this.

It happens in the first cutscene in the fade during the Champion of the Just quest. ![]()

Yeah, I'd rather not go into my feelings on that portrayal of Cullen (since it may upset others) but suffice it to say it creeped me out big time.
I played Champions for the first time last week, and I was actually hoping it would be creepier. I knew what the deal was going on, though even if I hadn't it was pretty obvious that the IQ was in the Fade (or somewhere like it), so none of it was real. The "rah I'm a twisted demonic version of Lel/Josie/Cullen" was a little too over-the-top for me to take entirely seriously. ("Tell me what you FEEL!" "I dunno.. like I could use a sandwich? Wait, was that figure supposed to be ME? That's not what my nose looks like! This demonic manifestation is so second rate!")
It's a shame they couldn't go with their original plans. Throwing the IQ into a outwardly normal situation, and then ramping up the weirdness, would have been all kinds of delicious. It would completely have shown up the Mage quest, though.
The IQ was in her own head (with Envy) & not the fade from what I understand. Cole mentions this in the dialogue with him during that quest.

Alistair was so sweet in that scene, I loved the way he spoke about my Warden who he's romancing... for a second I thought he said she'd died though, damn near shat myself until he continued on to explain where she actually was... I swear the writers purposely made him do that, LOL!

It was scary, wasn't it! GE is a ridiculously good voice actor!

Awww yay. I can't wait to experience that.
Alistair is my fave.

He's definitely my favourite romance... well, I say that but Cullen and Alistair come joint first in terms of personality and swoony worthyness etc but DA:O implemented Alistair's romance better than Cullen's because he got more screentime and dialogue etc than Cullen did, plus he was a companion so he was with us the entire time.
You can also set Alistair as a drunk, in which case, Loghain will show up instead. But I wasn't able to bring myself to do that in any of my DA:O playthroughs
For the record, you don't have to exile or execute Alistair to conscript Loghain into the Wardens -just marry him to Anora. Alistair and her will show up reigning together (if you do Hushed Whispers at all), Loghain will be the Warden at Adamant, and nobody needs to be a drunk hobo for that. ![]()

While I am totally smitten with Cullen for this game and doubt I would ever romance anyone else when I play a female, he still lacks compared to Alistair. His character, his voice, his shyness and geeky talks just totally make me love Alistair. He will always be my fav romance in all the games. Cullen comes a close second, but no one will ever top Alistair.
Also, I had a game in DA:I will the background of my female elven mage and I actually found I was a bit annoyed that Cullen seem to get over her so easily. I didn't want him to be hopelessly in love with her and never be able to romance my IQ, but that it should of been harder for him to fall for my IQ. Anyone else ever felt like this?

Oh god, don't get me started with the whole Amell/SuranaXCullen thing. I have a huge passionate hate for the pairing LOL! I'll refrain from ranting about it.
Sorry, I phrased that badly. My point was, even had I gone into the quest knowing nothing about it, it was patently obvious that the IQ had gone from "real world" to "unreal world," and thus everything he was about to see needed to be taken with a rather large helping of salt.
The point of the "Fade" segment was not that the Inquisitor shouldn't realize they're there, though. You're aware the whole time that what you're seeing is a dream, Envy even tells you as much, because his game is not convincing you that the visions are true - what he's trying to do is to use these memories and fears it finds running around in your head you to get a response from you. It's a feint, the demon shows you these absurd scenarios mixed with real memories to get a reaction from you -any reaction will do- so the more upset/amused/annoyed you get, the more it discovers about who you are so it can mimic you more accurately.
That's why when you find Cole, he will keep telling you to not respond, don't talk back, don't fight the demons back, just keep running, ignore everything and don't give Envy the satisfaction of acknowledging his taunts. He's helping you shut your mind spaces down so Envy starts running out of run to prod and poke around and has to "materialize" in the poor image he's managed to make out of you with the glimpses he caught, and that shape is weak enough that you can fight back to pretty much slap yourself awake.
You're not suppose to believe any of it is real -you know it's not. - the point is more that you know yourself all along better than Envy ever will.

I'm a huge fan of AmellxCullen myself, but I think it makes sense that Cullen would be able to move on because much of his current story arc in Inquisition involves him finding closure and coming to terms with his past. Also, I don't think it's clear how much time passes in-game before you reach Skyhold but you can choose to start the romance later and headcanon that it took him several weeks (or months) to admit his feelings. I do think he's the type to fall in love slowly, and once he does, he falls hard. c;
Then again, my Warden did the Ultimate Sacrifice so there wasn't any hope for him there, anyway. My own headcanon also involves a hefty amount of wild retconning involving the reincarnated soul of my Warden and lots of magical shenanigans, so...
A part of me will always love the idea of two star-crossed lovers tearing down the barriers of fate to reunite. And, in case you didn't know - if you do a playthrough without romancing Cullen, he does actually mention her several times, and will actually try to ask a DAO romanced Leliana about her at one point.
I decided to do something "productive" with my insomnia and created another Cullen fan video. This time showing a budding romance between Cullen and Lavellan in the aftermath of his personal quest, Perseverance.
(edit: tweaked it)

Some people in the thread have similar headcanons and feelings about mage Warden/Cullen and may agree with this (eta: ninja'd by Seph!), but largely most agree that it's been ten years since Origins and that's ten years too long to hold a torch for someone Cullen himself calls an inappropriate youthful infatuation. That's not really getting over her easily - he never actually knew her all that well beyond a few hellos in the common halls, and it's been a whole decade since then. There's always some romanticizing of the first kid you crushed on in high school, but there's a point where being in your 30s and still hung up on a school crush is a bit... you know. I'll generally agree that the buildup of Cullen's romance might have needed a little more meat and conflict to it, but... not of this kind. Personally I don't like playing second best, the notion of being the poor substitute for the one who got away, so if that had been the obstacle to his romance in DAI I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it at all, to be honest.
That's not to even mention that female mage is not everyone's Warden, and even with the "all the origins still happened" leeway, there is at least one world state in which she doesn't exist at all (the male mage origin), so if that were the main conflict of Cullen's romance, the romance would need several different versions to account for each variation of your Origins world.
