I think it is ultimately decided by how you are going to RP your char. As a mage Trev, she can spend time with her family as her circle was not that strict so it is easy to justify her motivations to seek the templars rather than the mages. However, I would always have Leliana as the Divine and the college established whenever I play a mage inquisitor, just to ensure the inquisitor is a free mage.

Siding with templars cost you Before the Dawn and a flirt post-BtD. Before the Dawn would flesh out his struggle with his past/templar order but some ppl feel this makes his character a little bit dark and uneasy. It's up to you to decide if it is worthy. Personally, I would side with mages for Cullenmance pts because of more Cullen airtime and the little field trip with him.

Cheers for the advice.

Yeah, I think I'll probably go Mage again because the Samson field trip, plus going with Dorian to the Dark Future were both pretty awesome sequences. I think the only reason to go Templar is Ser Barris (who I wish we could have recruited on the Mage side) because from what I've seen on youtube, the Therinfal mission seems rather dull. The end of the world in a dark future, versus battling the demonic version of an insane stalker trying to steal your identity... yeah, not much of a contest?

Different strokes for different folks, as they say. On the whole, I also prefer the Mage questline, but Therinfal has its moments. Ser Barris is awesome, and it's a shame that you don't get a similar amount of interaction with Fiona or any other NPC on the mage side. Well, I suppose there's Future!Leliana, but you can't take her home afterwards... eh, that's probably for the best.

Unless you do actually like the Templar quest, the follow up missions, the nemesis figure etc, in which case Ser Barris is just icing on a already really good cake.

There's also how you sort your priorities: is this specific path of Cullen's character development more important than your character's story to you? Does inner consistency with your character's story weight more than the game's shoddy quest design that locks people out of romance content over an unrelated faction choice? There's no right or wrong answer to that, it's all in how each player approaches that choice.

My IQ, for instance, went for the Templars, and that will always be my canon for her, because it was important to her as a character, regardless of how much content I win or lose as a player. Even after finding out I was missing on Cullen screentime, even after going back and playing through that quest to see if it was worth changing my canon for, I still found I couldn't force my IQ to go for the mages, because... that's just not her. She would never do that, it doesn't go with any of the story I built for her. I could find any backwards justification for it, but then I'd be turning her story into a waffly mess and forcibly changing her personality, all for my personal player benefit of seeing ten more minutes of Cullen on the screen (ten more minutes of character development I don't even like on him, granted, so in the interest of fairness, that does make my choice a lot easier). To a lot of players, their priority is Cullen's story rather than their Inquisitor's, so that's enough to be worth derailing their own choices in favor of what yields more Cullen content - to me, I found that it wasn't. The consistency of my character's... well, character, turned out to be more important than anything else - and so Templars she will go every time, whatever the personal cost in Cullen screentime to me.

Again, no wrong or right answers, just different approaches to the question.

Wait, what romance content are you locked out of?

The actual romance content is only like two small flirts, but the quest itself of course weights more for a romanced character because you have a vested interest in Cullen's personal issues. It's the same amount of screentime Leliana gets on Under Her Skin, what, really, makes it different is that Leliana is not a romanceable character so her presence is never affected by whether you're romancing her not. It's shoddy unbalanced quest design, basically: either the mage side nemesis quest should have been tied a to non-romanceable character, or the Templar one should have been tied to a romanceable one, for real equivalency - the Calpernia storyline would have a lot more personal investment coming from Dorian, for instace.

(But in practical terms of romance content that non-romancing characters don't also get through that path, it's just two extra flirt lines.)

I agree, the build up to the Templar side is great until the reveal of Envy, at which point it loses me slightly because he's so over the top and takes so many bites out of the scenery, it's hard to take him all that seriously as an antagonist.

But I will admit, that the Great Hall battle looked intense and I kinda wish we'd have something like that on the Mage side, and it's good that once you rescue the Templars who aren't crazy, they're portrayed as a sympathetic and heroic bunch... I just wish that aside from Cullen, we'd seen more Templars like that in the previous two games, instead of the insane zealouts they tended to be.

What I like about the mage side, aside from being a sucker for time travel in general, is that we have a great antagonist in Alexius. Despite all he does, he's still somewhat sympathetic as his sole motivation is not power or wealth, but to save his son from ghoulification. He's a tragic villain as when you meet him in the future, he's a broken man who's realised that nothing he did mattered and his heart is no longer in it anymore, making him as much a victim as anyone else in this dark vision of things to come.

And yeah, I'm with you in wishing we'd have more scenes with other people and more NPC's in this future? Perhaps maybe we could have had to likewise defend the hall with the others while Dorian does his ritual, then watch as they fall one by one until we're the last one left?

But as others have said, to each there own and both sides do have their pros and cons, like how Dorian loses a great showcase of his personality in Redcliffe in the Templar side and the Mage side loses those great moments with Cole in Therinfal.

You do have to wonder where Cullen, Varric and Cass all got those scars?

(My theory is... some kind orgy that got out of hand? What, it takes two weeks to cross the Waking Sea and there's little to do on a ship?!)

I found myself clicking on Cabot the bartender pretty often now, sometimes his comments are as cryptic as Coles, other times they make me laugh.

Cabot- "Seven people want your Minstrel dead, they considered smashing her lute but feared she would sing about it" He has such a dry delivery of all his lines too, tis funny.

I like the war-table and it's set-up, unless I feel something is urgent, I tend to activate the longest ones just before I'm ready to sign off and let them do their thing while I'm not in game. I love allocating those missions and hate it when advisors are tied up in one for hours and I can't get fiddling with them. The worst one I did was sending Leliana out on a 2hr odd one before getting her to bring my job specialists to Skyhold  longest 2hrs in game ever  I sort of did it again yesterday, poor Blackwall is festering over-night as I didn't have an available advisor :P

I live right on a harbour, at the sea and it's snowing and the snow is lying on the ground too :( I hope it's not going to be a repeat of 2 years ago when we got snowed in to our village for 4 days without power, that was not a good experience   Hubby went into survival mode and dug out the camping stoves and we had to use the coal fire to cook noodles and such, he loved it, going back to the old caveman style of living, I, on the other hand, was frozen & miserable. We often laugh about how we would live way back in historical times, even in DA timeline, he reckons he would live and manage quite well, he also reckons I would never have survived

Ha, I started cheating on the war table missions.  I assign one of my advisers and then change the date/time on my computer's clock.  It helps with the more annoying ones that are 10+ hours (seriously, who thought missions that long were a great idea??).

I could so see Varric, Iron Bull, and Dorian garudian the door after someone over hears all the noise this needs fan fiction now.

Personally, I figure that they'd conspire with Sera to hang a "Congratulations on having sex" banner in the Great Hall, somehow managing to do so in the middle of the crowded room without anyone seeing how they pulled this feat off?

This. This is why I actually have siding with Mages as my canon (also, I'm Dalish and/or Mage). Favourite villain: Alexius. Wow... I really love his character's reason of going to Cory.

Not to sound like the proverbial "stick in the mud," but his scar doesn't look curved enough to be a bite mark.

It certainly looks to have been caused by something rough rather than clean...maybe a claw? However, based on his past profession I would think sword would make the most sense. Unless someone smacked him upside the head with a tree branch? Or he tripped over his new robe-thingy and fell on a tree branch?

Everytime I see Cullen's armor, everytime I think that they must've get the inspiration from Ned Stark's... except they don't want to make cloaks or I'll be calling him Ned... :P
