I will do this on my new playthroughs and test!

This is what I did and I did not get the garden convo.

Went to Crestwood to meet with Alistair, did some stuff to build up power

Returned to Skyhold talked to Alistair, got the HOF war table quest, advanced the date on my PS4, finished and talked to him about it

Went to Western Approach to do the temple part of the warden quest

Did Wicked Hearts

Returned to Skyhold, kept checking on Alistair and Morrigan, they never spoke

Left to do stuff and kept returning multiple times, still nothing

Gave up and went to Adamant, got Alistair's line about Morrigan (of course I saved him)

I stupidly didn't realize that you apparently cannot do the Western Approach part of the quest before Wicked Hearts to get their garden convo to trigger.

What scene was this?  I love that pleasant look on his face.

I just realized why I have such a hard time romancing Alistair. :( It's because he broke up with me totally out of the blue on my first playthrough. I remember seeing the option to rule together and thought, "Well, that's a bit presumptuous" so I didn't choose it, and then blam. No, I didn't need my heart. It's okay to stomp on it. You basically have to force him to marry you by declaring it at the Landsmeet instead of him saying well, screw it, I'm going to stay with her because I love her. Again, it's your Warden continuing to make decisions for both of you and Alistair never freaking steps up.

And to stay on topic, here's an awkward Cullen because he doesn't break my heart.

That was after 'in hushed whispers'. He smiled at the Inquisitor, then the camera changed to Dorian and I just thought 'when Cullen's not in the picture anymore, he might still smile'. Checked with FlyCam and yes. He is smiling at Dorian. Like that. Think about it ;)

It doesn't matter what origin you play, Ali will show up if he was made king. You only get the "wife" line, though, if you are playing a Cousland who chose to "rule beside him." If you are playing his "mistress," he will show up and call you "love."

Don't forget that you get a kiss :D. In front of everyone too. I guess Alistair isn't afraid of a little PDA... although I guess when the whole group knows you're having sex you get over that real quick.

To be fair, he makes it clear throughout that he doesn't wanna be King, the signs were all there that it would end badly if you make him King without being a Cousland/marrying him lol. Plus, when it comes to royal marriage back then it sounds like there isn't much choice in the matter... in the latest games they've been a bit less stern with it, but in DA:O it was all very medieval-esc with it's approach.

I think what stabs me right in the feels is if you: do make him king, get dumped, don't do the DR and take him to the archdemon, he kills it and dies regardless of what you say because he still loves you.

I know I'm preaching to the choir but I need to exercise this guy out of my head.  He is not real, he is not real, he is not real...

I also was thinking that there is no way a guy as perfect as Cullen could exist today for many reasons, which is obvious I guess but bear with me a sec.  He's insanely good looking so in today's society he'd mostly grow up totally spoiled (most likely not hearing any calling to serve in a Templar equivalent) so he'd likely be a douche, having women throwing themselves at him his whole life.  He would probably never know any sort of real strife unless he had some horrible childhood, maybe he'd become a drunk or some other drug addict but there wouldn't be any noble cause behind it like with taking lyrium to serve a holy army.  His desire to serve in the Templars and the trauma that came of it pretty much shapes who he is.  And he definitely wouldn't be shy with women or chaste!  And finally I'd imagine growing up in a world where there is constant threat of death around you warrants extremely passionate love affairs. It's highly likely you won't see that person tomorrow.  Okay that's enough of my insane rambling!

... and Cullen nowadays would waste even more time on doing his hair!

Gosh, all that talking / thinking about Alistair made me start Origins again, rush through my Harrowing, speedrun to Ostagar, just to jump on him, before even reaching Lothering. Didn't even know that was possible. All it took was a silver bracelet, a tribal necklace and a shoulder.

See, I thought that was great because there was the very real chance that it would happen in your game, but it's also completely avoidable so your first playthrough could end badly with him dumping you or dying/whatever but then you could always do subsequent playthroughs and get your happy ending if you want it. That's what's been missing from the last two games, no chance of avoidable failure, it either happens and you lose someone and it's unpreventable, or nothing happens at all.

So, I'm sorry to continue the Alistair talk in this Cullen thread, but I've been wondering this for a while now.

Almost all of the comments I see regarding the Alistair relationship, whether it be on the forums or on the Dragon Age Confessions tumblr, are upset that you can't marry him if not a Cousland. It really seems like I'm in the minority being happy with my "mistress" status on my Amell Warden.

It doesn't have anything to do with whether he wants to be king. It's that he makes a choice about his relationship with your Warden precisely when he has the most power to choose you. He simply will not fight for the Warden. He either let's you do the fighting for him, or he gives up.

I think what Monica is saying is more that, in gameplay terms, the only way to marry Alistair is by making an announcement before the whole bannorn, without even consulting him about it first - and if you go in blind into the game and don't know that this is your last chance to salvage your relationship before he dumps you cold on your ass, it will blindside you. My first playthrough I thought the same, I'm not gonna use this option to rule together right here right now (even though I totally want to rule with him) because making a public theatre of our relationship is ridiculous, we should talk about marriage and ruling together in private. Certainly we'll have the opportunity to discuss this later, right? Riiiight? Nope, immediately out of the Landsmeet, he ends your relationship with no further chance to discuss that hey, you're a noble too, daughter of the second most powerful family in the country, maybe you could rule together? He doesn't even see the possibility himself, it's over just like that.

It's not a good scenario for a Cousland if you don't know what to expect going in, you either impose marriage onto him in front of everyone, or you get the boot - and if that happens on your first playthrough it can leave you a little burned out on the whole thing.

No, I meant that I went from Flemeth's Hut directly to camp, where I gave Alistair gifts and talked to him, until I was able to kiss him. And get a bit rejected ;)

Ah, I see. I think a lot of that is down to the protagonist having to make all the important big decisions. As to why they didn't let them come to a decision in private? Well, drama I guess. Plus, DG likes fan tears so I expect that was also a large part of it.

They must have gotten a huge power boost from those tears after ME3.

Different team do Mass Effect, but if tears power the bioware building then they probably had a power surge after that one!
