Sooo.... here's an unusual question I received today, and I'm wondering if you folks have any insight. Someone asked me if they could translate one of my stories into another language.  I'm flattered, of course. I guess there's no harm, right? On the other hand, it's not a language I speak, so I couldn't tell if it was close or anything. Do you think there's anything I should be concerned about it...? I'd appreciate opinions.

It sounds innocent enough to me, but I don't have any experience on the matter *shrugs*

I'm french, I read fanfictions (and this thread here ^^) but there is many many french who can't understand english to save their lives. (even I ... i can read english ... but write english ? arghhh, too difficult ;))
I would like to see more french fanfics, but in a way, I feel more "awkward" when I read one in french

If you have someone who can speak this language, go for it and he/she can tell you if something is wrong :)

What language? If it happened to be one of the languages I happen to know well (3 by today) I can help proofread...

It's wonderful that they asked (so many don't,) but unless you have someone who can check to make certain the translation is good, I'd be wary.

The thing is, translation always kill some subtleties of the story. There are things that is always lost/get the meaning changed. I mean, I love Hemingway (really) in English. R2s, if I were you, IMO if you can find someone knowing both languages well, go for it. Just ensure that you got someone who knows the language read them before being posted. You know, ensuring that no element from the story got changed... My 2 cents tho...

As it wrong that everytime I fight a Dragon with Iron Bull in the party and he taunts them with Challenge, my brain is quietly thinking;

"But there is one they fear, in their tongue he is Dovahkiin, Dragonborn! FUS RO DAH!"

Hahaha. Good morning all! Speaking of which: I saw the Iron Bull romance video and it's pretty hilarious. It explains the taunts too.  :D

BWAHAHAHAHA TRUE!

Everytime that majestic beauty comes throwing a fireball at me, I really want to shout FUS RO DAH literally.

The good thing about DA is that dragon battles difficulty is really really really good. In Skyrim my pretty little khajiit can scratch the dragons in less than 3 minutes... She's a demi-god & even more powerful than Solas I believe...

How I will pay for a Dragon DLC...

And yes I want a marriage DLC, with dragons... What are lions compared to dragons...

Skyrim got weird after a while because no matter how hard you put the difficulty, taking down two or three Dragons at once was a doddle, while some of the single enemies were complete nightmares to kill... and how does that make any sense? Luckily we have mods to fix that, I guess?

Inquisition at least made the dragon fights tough as sin and not predictable from one to another. I'd pay for a DLC where there is basically no plot, except for killing a boatload of dragons, perhaps a crazy hunting spree with one of Cass' relatives in Nevarra (one of the Pentaghasts who do fight dragons, not one of the lazy ones), which gives us more info about her or gives her a chance to grumble more about her relatives and/or Nevarra?

Or if we're going for something plot and Flemeth-related, how about we fight those Dragons awakened by Yavana in the Silent Grove comics?

Hilarious! I can hear Dorian's voice saying it. I do love the expression. Gonna have to start using that.

I found an awesome mod for Skyrim that alters and improves enemy AI. Vanilla, I would always end up laying on Nightmare and still be bored. With the mod, things never get boring!

I'm pretty settled on my canon from the start this time, ...fortunately, I think? I've tinkered with all the races and classes at this point, and while they were all super fun to play for different reasons, I could only really "buy" my human noble in the role of the Inquisitor (as far as the stuff that interests me, at least, the politics, influence games, the alliances and such). Solas does nothing for me and the less I say about his romance the better, and of the other romances I've tried I really really liked Blackwall's and Sera's, but neither of them feel like canon material for my Quizz, they don't have that same power as "the Commander of the Inquisition and the Herald of Andraste," as it were, so that was an easy choice. Really, if I didn't love Cullen to pieces already, that scene when the Commander of the Inquisition's forces holds the Inquisitor in front of their troops after the fateful battle where they defeated big bad stamped a big golden seal of CANON on their relationship for me.

The rest (Templars, Wardens, bye Loghain etc) are also pretty solid choices for me - the well is really the only major choice I haven't settled on yet. I have to see the scene with Flemeth play out without Kieran as that's my real canon, but so far I'm leaning towards having my IQ do it - the potential for development for both her and Cullen is sounding better and better the more I think about it... but yeah, then there's that part of me that really wants to drag Cullen away from all the magicky stuff and give him peace of mind at last, free from worrying about magic this and magic that for the rest of his life. While I like the effect it has on her from a storytelling perspective, I don't know if I want Ari to drag Cullen back down into it with this Mythal stuff when he's in such a comfortable place otherwise. It's such a hard choice. I don't think I'll have a definitive answer on this until if/when we get answers about Morrigan, in any case, so I should probably not hinge my canon too much on this choice in case I have to change it later.

Let me know how your canon is coming along as you go, we need to compare notes at the end and see if we end up being same person again. :P

Well, who am I kidding? It's going to be a human rogue who romances Cullen. The rest of the canon is what I'm just really not sure about. Even last night I was replaying the Templar side and let them join as allies again, and I don't want to replay that to conscript them. You'd think that I'd have more pt's under my belt since I've literally been playing since release, but nope, just the one. I know I'll go Templar side, I'm still on the fence about recruiting Vivienne and hardening Leliana. But the Well is that really big, looming choice that I have to make and I really don't want to metagame it, but I'm afraid that's what I'll end up doing. I think one thing I need is a world state where I didn't do the DR, spared Loghain, and Loghain died killing the Archdemon (which also means no Kieran). If Loghain's going to go out, I'd rather it be that way, but honestly, I'd rather just replay Origins and do all that so I can "live" through it again.

And you had to say that thing about Solas, didn't you? :P You know I want to know what you think now! :D

edit: Totally forgot about the Winter Palace. Who leads Orlais? I still don't know!

Seconded!! This is exactly what I feel, need super difficult dragon battles... A Nevarran DLC is not bad, or just say Cass' relatives come dragon hunting for several reasons. Or someone release an army of possessed dragons, that can make a great story & great many dragons

I've done some translations and it really depends who it is. Its needs to be someone who is an expert in both language, because much is lost in translation. May I ask what the other language is? Being trilingual, I have to say that I prefer watching movies or reading books in the original texts for that very reason. That is just me; however. If the person doing it knows their stuff, you needn't be worried.

I still recommend you ask someone you trust & know both languages to read that once tho... You never know with internet. (My 2 cents... That's your story, your pick).

Or, if not, Google Translate that at least

Or: Here in forum there are lots of people from different countries. We speak English in this thread but even here you might always find people who can speak the language... Put a thread & ask?

Oh, absolutely. I remember reading a couple of Russian short stories in Russian, then encountering one of them in English translation later, and a lot was lost. And a standing joke I have is that some technical manuals are translated from the native language into two others before being translated back just to make certain as much clarity as possible is lost. :P

I was thinking more that someone might largely rewrite R2's story to change something important, and her name might end up on something embarrassing.

Thanks all for the input. I don't have any experience with this, and this is sorta what I was wondering about. Would I want more readers? Sure! Will they still be my words in Russian? Hmm. I don't have any way of knowing a priori how well the translation would go. Or... where it would be posted? Would I still have control over the translation? Hmmm. Just trying to wrap my head around the implications for my little story. And my time. ^_^

And... still squeeing over the request in the first place! LOL

Your words in Russian -> TBH, I don't think so, not 100% at least. Subtle nuances are... very hard to translate, some elements can't be translated. Some idioms simply doesn't exist in other languages. For example in a language I know there are two ways to refer "You", either the more formal one, or the familiar one. So something in English translated to this language always... add some weird interpretation of the translator. So it depends on how good your translator are, how good he/she understands the context & your story.

Does your story contains lots of subtle nuances of languages? If it's a more bash & kill actions, I wouldn't worry if I were you. If it contains lots of idioms, subtle choices of phrases & words, well...

You know, even in-game the translation's not always follow word by word. Apparently in French Alistair's famous line "Have you ever lick a lamp post in winter" becomes something like "Have you ever run naked on the snow". That changes a lot... Because for me "lick a lamp post in winter" also have some...other NSFW meaning (maybe I have more NSFW thoughts than AListair).

Well, that's my 2Cs. In any case it's really great for you to get people loving your stories so much! Say, which one is that? You've written so many
