Honestly...I always assumed the writers put this in as a shout out to us cullenites (in a funny way)! That is why I was so shocked to see Cole's line about it.  It makes it all very dark (something I at first found funny).  Then, when you think about the power nobles have, etc (as pointed out above), the whole scene now feels very different to me.  And now I feel bad that Cullen has to go through it! :(

Yes I never thought it was a shout out to us Cullen fans. Becuase of how I saw the power disparity between him and the nobles of Orlais. That is why it made me upset I could do nothing about his treatment at the ball and how the writers made it look like a joke. When in reality it's not one in fact many nobles in Orlais can find someone weakness very quickly to make them loose control. This is in fact the whole point of The Game.

I also want to tell these little fuckers off, as well, since no one should be treated like this. I would gladly take a approval drop to do this to these nobles who are sexual harassing him.

While we want to tell those arses off, it wouldn't last. For anything to even be effective I think Cullen would had to really stood up for himself there, but that is not in Cullen's character. If we look back to DAO, he ran off at the slightest flirt from the mage PC and some of the nobles at the ball are even getting physical so...it would have to be pretty traumatizing. In real life I used to jump in to defend my little brother from people, but it just made it worse for him. However, once he actually defended himself those little jerks scurried off like the cockroaches they were. I think the same would apply to these nobles, but it would come at a great cost to the Inquisition and the IQ. Which you could see Cullen not wanting to do if he was or was not in a relationship, he said the Inquisition came first when you were dealing with his addiction...the same applies here. Constants and variables, my friend.

To be blunt, doesn't the fact that they (the Orlesian 'Cullenites') take it so far when he is clearly uncomfortable sort of make us look like jerks, too?  I get that groups of primarily women who like things ('fangirls') are always going to get dumped on but it feels a bit mean-spirited of a dig, under the circumstances.  The 'inappropriate', sexual, whatever kinds of fantasies, art, displays, gushing, etc. that are done to a fictional character are really not comparable to actual non-consensual 'flirting' or harassment of a real person, so it's kind of an obnoxious way to translate Cullen fans into an in-character setting.

Oh feck it I don't know, I'm tired and angry and full of ennui.  Going to bed.

The only reason I can find humor in this scene (and I do still laugh about this every time I do the ball) is because I know it's a wink-wink nudge-nudge shout out to us. It's like yeah, I get it, Cullen has a bunch of Cullenites perving all over him, the writers are getting cute with us. But once you abstract the fourth wall-breaking inside joke with Cullen's fandom and start thinking about how the character himself actually feels in that situation.... yeah. It's funny until it isn't.

So I read some of your previous posts and I have to ask. Do you love or hate Game of Thrones? It seems that you would adore it for the politics but hate it*at least the TV show* for smoothing over major battles?

Aww, thank you! I know I took a different take on Fen'Harel, but explained it to Ti when she said that she noticed it yesterday. It seems that people are liking my take on him, once they understand why I did it/what is to come.

To be fair...GRRM is not very good at writing battles either...but my boyfriend HATES GOT because the battles and swordplay are so weak in the show...

I did not bring Cole along, so I took Cullen's reaction as exasperation more than anything. This puts the teasing in a whole new light. I suppose this would be much like having your personal space invaded when you go out. I always got so angry whenever that happened...

Well... Gushing over Cullen is one thing. It would put things into a different perspective if we were like this regarding Greg Ellis though.

.........Why you so angry?

I go back and forth on this topic depending on my mood.  I know I squeal like a fool over Cullen stutff, and can laugh at myself.  My in a more sensitive head-space, I get really ticked when I fell like I am being picked on over it, so I feel ya!  Cheer up gal!  It's Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

XD Writing love scenes and battles are the most difficult things to write for most writers. I can envision what I want my battle to be like, but the final piece of that vision is never all that stellar.

Yep! There should be around 10-12 chapters by the time I am done with the story. Then I would start the sequel*which is already planned out*. The romance should truly start around Chapter 5, but things would start to be heating up around Chapter 4.

I thought the same and did feel a little offended that that was how we were thought of, plus the fact the Cullen was made to seem that he didn't appreciate the attention much. It didn't feel like it was a friendly nod as much as making fun of.

I do adore the way GRRM writes the politics of his universe in the novels, the "game" of thrones as it were. It's everything I wish the BW would delve into more seriously - politics, warfare, houses, lineages, huge battles, war that tears nations apart and stretches on for years and years, etc. But I can't honestly say I love either the books or the TV show anymore, because the treatment of women in both is appalling, and no matter what GRRM says to excuse himself, the sad fact is that women in his books are little more than disposable objects to be either raped or murdered (or raped and murdered) to further some guy or another's manpain, and I ain't here for that.

In an awkward way of putting it, I wish Dragon Age was a lot more like ASoIF... except without all the rape.

Most folks wait to post it until we get to the celebration, if that's what you're asking. So, post it somewhere, and then post a link to it on p5000.

Cersei, Arya, Brianne of Tarth, and Daeneryes are all pretty strong woman who aren't seen as objects of men or if they are...they are actually the ones pulling the strings behind the scenes. Obviously, I am vehemently against the treatment of women in his books, but that is what women were seen like in the time GOT is in. They were nothing but sex toys, child-bearers, or tools used to further one's own status. I appreciate the accurate portrayal and while I am personally disgusted by it, I adore Game of Thrones for what it is.

Lol, I do understand what you mean though! That's why I really appreciate the Landsmeet in DA:O...even though it was over in five minutes. I wish they did more things like that.

Yeah, you well know how I feel about the whole "crazy Cullenites" thing. I do take comfort in that Mike did apologize that time they got called out on that stream bullsh!t (like only two days after the cake business), and seemed genuinely unaware of how they were coming across to us. Since then, we got the horse picture apropos of nothing, the Movember campaign, the VGA spot... I wouldn't call it a subtle apology in the forms of treats or anything, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for the moment.

I don't believe I was around during that time, I think I was studying for finals. What exactly did they say?

LOL Funny, I don't really view those as apologies, at all. They just seem par for the course of their "crazy oversexed Cullenite" marketing machine. I'm sure that dev on Mike's stream wasn't the only one  parodying the cullenite squeeing when the silly ladder horse and the VGA spot came out.

I don't wanna go much further into this here because we'd be veering too far off-topic - and it's not the place anyway; but this is actually not historically accurate at all. History is reshaped and retold as it best befits the interests of those telling it, and there are many interests that a narrative in which women were always submissive, inferior, objects to be used, etc. can serve. Real history is a lot more complex than that, though. And even just the fact that this is the "historical" narrative GRRM is interested in perpetuating makes me side-eye him from here to the moon.

Anyway, that's off topic enough, and we're trying not to burn through pages too fast until the 5k, right. So... that Cullen fellow, huh. :P
