I've been trying to find out as I'd like to know whom.his face is modeled on. So far, nothibg

His face wasn't modelled after any particular person. If you layer his new face over the old one you'll see the basic structure of his features is still there (and his original face was pretty much template face number 2 with some tweaks). The differences you can tell between his DA2 face and his DAI one (smaller nose, rounder jaw, eye spacing) were iterated among the artists, model designers, his writing/animation team, the QA feedback ("make him hotter!"), etc, but they were all done over the features he already had. There's no real life model behind his face, Cullen's just... Cullen. ;)

All stemming from one art direction for DA2: "clean cut"

My wishes for Cullen - pure fluff of course - love you anyway!

  • I wish his eyes weren't sunken in - and his pallor - would love to see some color in his face. I guess without lyrium, he looks a tad unhealthy. Hopefully he will look healthier in the future.
  • I wish he was able to change clothes - really that fur thing is ok - but not everyday and all the time?? The shape of the back makes him look a bit hunched over - poor posture.
  • I wish his head didn't flop over to one side quite so often.
  • I wish he didn't sashay to the war table.
  • I wish he didn't always keep on hand on his sword. Sometimes it looks really grandmotherly and odd.

I actually think he looks quite a bit more healthy than in DA2. The dark circles under his eyes are gone, and I think the pale skin has more to do with his overall coloring (red hair to blond?) than with his health. Although, one could attribute it to withdrawal.

Given that there was a different engine for all three games I think they did a really great job. The character that I think that has "traveled" the best is Leliana, with her DAI appearance finally looking like the original Sacred Ashes trailer.

I do think it's a shame that he doesn't have his noodle hair. Although I'm not crazy about that kind of hair IRL on men (Tom Hanks, Greg Ellis) it just seemed to be a part of "Cullen." Although I've gotta say that the fanfic writers are coming up with some good stuff regarding that.

There probably is no face model based on the multiple iterations his model has gone through.

I think we had asked Allan at one point about Cullen's artist and he didn't know who it was. But it makes sense that several people are working on the characters. Whoever worked on Cullen, thank you :D!

@ Eluvanius, that's beautiful :) .

There was a discussion about Cullen at the ball yesterday. The thread has moved on by now, so maybe I shouldn't bring it up again but I'd like to add something. If this is inappropriate somehow, just ignore me.

Honestly...I always assumed the writers put this in as a shout out to us cullenites (in a funny way)! That is why I was so shocked to see Cole's line about it.  It makes it all very dark (something I at first found funny).  Then, when you think about the power nobles have, etc (as pointed out above), the whole scene now feels very different to me.  And now I feel bad that Cullen has to go through it! :(

http://www.deviantar.../C-15-489893451

link to sad Cullen pic for top of page...

The only reason I can find humor in this scene (and I do still laugh about this every time I do the ball) is because I know it's a wink-wink nudge-nudge shout out to us. It's like yeah, I get it, Cullen has a bunch of Cullenites perving all over him, the writers are getting cute with us. But once you abstract the fourth wall-breaking inside joke with Cullen's fandom and start thinking about how the character himself actually feels in that situation.... yeah. It's funny until it isn't.

I agree on the wink-wink shout out to us and it made me giggle. But even if you think about the situation from a purely roleplaying perspective, the scene isn't that bad IMHO. Cullen is a good-looking guy and he stands out somehow. Not just because of his appearance but also because he accompanies the Inquisitor. He attracts attention. So, it made perfect sense for me that some bored, noble women thought they had found a new toy to play with and that's really all there was. It certainly made Cullen uncomfortable but I always assumed that he was prepared for the worst when they left for the winter palace. As in: Cullen: "Okay, now I have to deal with this traitor, that's bad enough, but on top of it I have to deal with him at an Orlesean ball. Great Maker. Oh well, the sooner we get this over with, the sooner I can be back at the Skyhold". And I brought Cole with me as well, so I got his comment. As for Cole, I think he shouldn't have been at the ball. He was confused and maybe a bit too emotional. Couldn't it be that  he didn't have a 100 % correct interpretation of Cullen's feeling that night? Another possibility could be that Cole wasn't referring to the nobles at the ball but to Cullen's nightmares and the demons that are - so to speak - still chasing him. This was actually my first thought when I heard Cole's comment.

I was much more surprised how little Cassandra enjoyed the ball. I thought she would be used to it somehow but she seemed to be just as uncomfortable as Cullen.

I didn't realize that the hand was on the sword for a while ( I find the graphics on 360 to be meh) and thought that his hand was just contorted. There's a little walk he does ( as well as some other characters) that sorta looks like the Cornelius walk in Planet of the Apes. Not exactly ape like...but the walk it weird.

Lol these! I could never put my finger on it but he does sashay !! Oh my....and yes the head flop think, particularly in halamshiral and in bed make his neck looks oddly long and awkward. Same thin happens to dorian in bed too, but quizzy does it and looks great! So weird...
Personally don't mind the paleness. It fits since skyhold isn't exactly tropical, and he's not running around with quizzy, the lyrium withdrawl, and he's probably just reading reports all day inside. He just needs a vacation...where do people go to vacation in thedas?!

Wait... I thought the trick was to *not* travel anywhere directly from the War Table...? I never actually  had the banter bug, but if it's starting now, can someone confirm...?

*snip*

So, I only had the banter bug in my second playthrough, and I've just gotten Ali in Skyhold. I have yet to do Adamant and Wicked Hearts. Whenever I fast traveled from Skyhold, I'd get the banter bug. Only if I fast traveled through the war table did the music start again, and I'd get banter. I got this tip off of Reddit, and it seemed to work with other ppl as well. Maybe others experienced things differently?

I can't travel to Val Royeaux via the war table. Do you just mean in the war room, or the table? There's no means to get there via the war table. There's just a knife in the table saying that that quest is completed. Do you have a means to travel there via the war table? Because if you do and I don't then that may be a separate problem. I can fast travel to other regions, and have tried the suggested method of standing around in a safe area for a half hour, but no dice.

Ooops. You are right, Val Royeaux turns into a knife pretty quickly. So, what I would do is use the war table to fast travel anywhere on the map. Then, to check whether the banter bug was fixed (which is connected to the background music not playing), I would fast travel to Val Royeaux. It has very distinctive music, easy to pick up, and if the music there would work, then I was good to go.

Now, this was before Patch 2. I just opened the game, and Patch 2 installed automatically. I zigzagged all over the map, and for the first time I got music in the Western Approach!!! Whether I traveled from the war table, or from anywhere else in Skyhold, the music kept playing. This makes me hopeful that, at least in my game, the banter bug is fixed.

If you are still experiencing difficulties, traveling directly from the war table might still fix things for you. You can use Val Royeaux as a measure to see if the bug is gone or not.

Sorry I cannot be of any more help :(

I pretty much agree with this. As it saw it, Cullen is uncomfortable and out of his depth and possibly worried that he'll say something wrong and screw things up for the Inquisition. But I also think he's pretty well aware of how the Game works (even if he doesn't care for it) and that this is the culture of the court and all of the teasing and flirting means exactly nothing. I never got the impression that he felt personally threatened by anything. He seemed mostly just annoyed at the nobles and nonplussed as to why they were fawning over him of all people (because apparently our boy has no clue how gorgeous he is, bless his heart <3).

I do also agree that Cole can be overly dramatic sometimes. I've had him and Solas arguing over the interpretation of certain experiences in some of their banter, and he seemed to take the more dramatic interpretation. Possibly because he's used to looking for hurts to fix.

Hey ya'll!

I was thinking I might try to post some of the massive DAO tome I have written on AO3.  It is my first time ever posting on there and was wondering if anyone had any advice for the way I should tag it?

It is an Alistair-Coulsand-Gilmore romance epic with high angst, dark crap, and lotsa fluff, and a little smut (it is ...kinda weird...). I am super nervous, but I figure I should do something with it (as per Zarro-Mornigstar's advice).

I am going to post the first chunk of it (up until where it starts getting spotty chapter-wise) and will link to it here if I can figure out how to do it.

Working on it now, but if anyone has any cautionary notes about posting stuff on there, do let me know!

I'm glad you brought it back up because I'm also just getting to last night's posts and had a comment as well.

To be blunt, doesn't the fact that they (the Orlesian 'Cullenites') take it so far when he is clearly uncomfortable sort of make us look like jerks, too?  I get that groups of primarily women who like things ('fangirls') are always going to get dumped on but it feels a bit mean-spirited of a dig, under the circumstances.  The 'inappropriate', sexual, whatever kinds of fantasies, art, displays, gushing, etc. that are done to a fictional character are really not comparable to actual non-consensual 'flirting' or harassment of a real person, so it's kind of an obnoxious way to translate Cullen fans into an in-character setting.

To be honest, though, a small but not negligible part of the stuff I've seen in Cullen fandom does make me pretty damned uncomfortable? It doesn't have to be a dig at the entire fandom, just the creepy component of the fandom.

For months before Inquisition came out and after Cullen was announced as an LI tumblr seemed like an endless parade of comics about Inquisitors or other party members touching Cullen's ass and making him uncomfortable. Which is literally what his worst admirers at the Palace were doing. I mean, yes, there is no real person here feeling harassed, but that doesn't make the act of harassing more pleasant to watch.

I agree. I am grateful that Cullen was included and that he was written very tastefully as a romance for us, but the reasons you stated here are also why I was a little uneasy about how they claim Cullen smells like Elderflowers. I mean, it's a hilarious joke insult in Monty Python ("Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"), but while the implication that Cullen is the delicious consumable bait and we, the women, are the rodents who can't help but be lured in is amusing, it also is a bit condescending. At least it's not very direct.

Huh... I thought the elderflowers and oakmoss nicely represented his the duality of stereotypically extremely masculine (big guy, wears armor, carries a sword, commands armies, terse and impatient) and softer qualities (gentle voice, shyness, curly hair, long eyelashes, looks good in a skirt) that makes him compelling (to me), but that's probably overinterpreting.

Wait... I thought the trick was to *not* travel anywhere directly from the War Table...? I never actually  had the banter bug, but if it's starting now, can someone confirm...?

The supposed trick is to ONLY leave the War Table by fast traveling, but for me that actually triggers the Drums Of Skyhold Everywhere All The Time bug and doesn't affect banter either way. The only thing that's affected my banter is marking quests/codex entries/inventory items read.

I miss the noodle hair, and it shall always live on in my headcanon. The noodles pop right back up in full force every time he showers or sweats or the air's too humid around him, and he gets all embarrassed and flustered that his ~knight in shining armor~ disguise is slipping, but Quizzie just laughs and fluffs his hair and tells him she likes his dorky noodles just the way they are. <3

To be honest, what I miss the most of his original design is that sharp nose that went for miiiiiiles. I'm not sure how to headcanon his gorgeus nose away... maybe he broke it in Kirkwall and it settled back kinda wonky and... smaller. Sadness and woe for my poor Quizzie who never knew dat nose in its full eye-poking glory.

Well, it's not much different from what we do when playing with the character creator. You don't necessarily need to model your character after a real person - you can just take a template and play around with the slides until it looks pleasant to the eye, or evokes the feeling you want to convey with that character (a sweet round face, a sharp ragged one, a broken scarred look, a frightened insecure one, etc). As for how the final look of a character is determined, or where the ideas for how a character should look come from, I recommend this post by Matt Rhodes (one of the concept artists at BW) where he explains a lot of that process: Concept Art - Behind the Scenes, particularly the stuff further down the post, where he goes into designing for Dragon Age in specific.

Well I finally got my piece up and online with Ao3. It does have a small part that is NSFW. It is meant to be a series, but we shall see if anyone likes it before I write more. Please feel free to give me any feedback. Like I said it is my first fanfic ever and since I did have fun writing it, I would like to do more, but not if it sucks,LOL.

Some of these comments about his face are funny to me - his new nose is one of my favorite features about him.  I also like his sashay - I prefer to call it "swagger".  I would definitely have liked to see him without the armor in more casual clothes at least once, ditto for Leliana. I do agree about the neck, sometimes it looked a bit too long and awkward.  It would have been great if they could have come up with a balance between noodly curls and the brushed out look he has now.  His hairstyle was popular in the 80's, actually.

I was wondering whether you awesome people would be interested in a February Cullen Challenge? Both FanFic and Art :) Because it is short-notice, and because we have the 5000pg milestone coming up, the deadline for submission would be end of February. However, the theme would be Valentine's.

We'd need a panel of judges for each category (perhaps 3). The winner within the writing section would get a commissioned piece of Cullen drawn by myself, 8x11" format, digital. I am still debating over what might be appropriate for the winner of the art section - maybe a fanfic, 4k words?

Does this look like something interesting to do? Anyone willing to help? Suggestions? :)
