Yeah I wanted to smack the writers for that little goodbye, since she was never my LI. I felt very violated by that gift for the reasons you pointed out.

 

Yeah, especially as it looked like the kind of in-depth meld that the Asari do when they want kids?

 

From a practical and pragmatic pov, I could see Liara perhaps thinking that in addition to Glyph beacons she seeded across the galaxy as a failsafe, it might be useful to have someone else with Shepard's traits and personality (which the Asari reproduction could theoretically provide), who could fight for over a thousand years if need be, in case Shepard failed to stop the Reapers or died in the attempt?

 

Still, to do so would be a violation of both Shepard and the audience, so I hope they wouldn't go that way, even if it was done by "accident". Especially since it wouldn't help the writers dissuade the comment complain she's a Mary Sue, due to their open admition that she's their favourite character, the one the games often push us to romance it seems, and the one who you can romance at any point in the series and not be locked out with?

 

I like Liara, but I would not be okay with them pulling that stunt with us.

I like Liara and even I was like... "Dude, did she just screw me?" during that scene. It didn't help that the the light in the distance you were rushing towards, looks like a certain part of anatomy when you look at it a certain way...

Nooo thats cant work! Asari are all females because they can meld, but a fem shep doesn't have those lady bits or whatever they need. I don't buy it. Maybe it'll be the little boy or girl buzz is talking to at the end.

Yeah, I could see that as a huge violation of said audience if they do this by accident. It would ****** me off to no end because my Shepard is not having her children with Liara. She is in love with either Garrus or Kaidan depending on the Shepard.

Yeah, not so much in my opinion. I couldn't stand Kaidan - even though he knew Shepard, he still turned his back and abandoned him/her when he was needed most. Cullen wouldn't do that. 

 

I see more similarity with Garrus than Kaidan. 

 

Kaidan took a while for me to like, so I can see why many people don't like him.

 

As for how he was handled in ME2, I don't think it was done all that well, for either the Virmire Survivor. His letter made it clear he never got over Shepard, while Ashley and her letter both seemed more p*ssed off that you didn't call her in two years, despite how many times you tell her you were too busy being dead at the time?

 

Kaidan always seemed like the kinda guy who would have wanted to join you on Horizon despite having some misgivings, while Ashley would still refuse outright. I'd say that the only reason he didn't was because of Rule of Drama at work and if he had to turn down tagging along in ME2, it would be because the Alliance wouldn't let him, even if he personally wanted to do it?

This part reminded me of the voice over of the letter that Raphael Sbarge did for Kaidan fans. Yet another actor to give kudos to, as Greg Ellis did the ringtones for all us Cullenites... There are so few celebs that show appreciation like that, it's really heart warming when they do little things like this that mean so much.

Kaidan is very similar too Cullen as it's takes awhile to like him, in fact, I agree with Sifr on the way he was handled ton Horizon.

Heck, even Ashely was not handled very well with her more worried about why you did not call her.


I also agreed that Kaidan seemed out of Character, since he would be the type to join her on Horizon but with some misgivings while Ash would refuse flat out.

I think that and a new engine, the faces render better now. He looks amazing in this game compared to the last 2, but again.. just an opinion.

Speaking of which, should we start really cutting out on the OT now that we're only about 150~ish pages away from 5k, or is everyone else doing alright with their contributions? I know at least Seph and I were already pressed for time about 200 pages ago, and the thread didn't really slow down at all. But if eveyone's ready to go and it's just me who's running late, I can postpone my current ptoject and whip up a quickie oneshot to at least have something to contribute with.

Benjamin Button style? He did have a very crinkly forehead in DAO. It really truly is amazing that he's just pixels, no face model back there. To be honest, I had no concept of cullen until DA2. I had played DAO but I think my canon was Dalish Rogue so I never got a taste, and by then I was so smitten with Alistair, I wouldn't have cared who cullen was I'm saddened my awakening came so late in the game...his personality didn't seem particularly colorful for me in DA2 either, just a kind of quest giver with lots of exposition.

 

I think that it's actually interesting, if we're to "analyze" his personality/interactions throughout the series.

 

DA:O Magi Origin - a shy, moderate guy, quite nervous. This gives some colour to his person.

DA:O Broken Tower - heavily shell-shocked, currently freaking out due to his bad experience. Whew... heavily colourful if you ask me.

DA:2 - cold, hard person. Likely still recovering from above event. He's distancing himself from everything to protect himself IMO, this might make his character seems bland. Then, he distance himself from "emotions" once again to focus on his job. If he's a colour he's definitely grey there, cold grey.

DA:I - a more warmer person than in DA2, maybe that's because he had finally started to believe what he's doing is actually serve for the better, that he's getting a second chance of everything he felt he had screwed up so far in his life. Doing his romance, spending time with him, helping him cope with his "condition" in either way gave much colour to his person.

 

So, that's to say, I'm not at all surprised to see Cullen as a gray/cold character in DA2. It really gives the magnificent pallet of his character, we've seen it in every colour now right?

I got started on the games a lot later than most people, and was a bit curious about Cullen from my first PT as a non-mage, then much more fascinated after my first mage PT when I realized that the templar from the Broken Circle was the same as the stuttering templar in the hall who obviously had a thing for a female mage. When I saw the cut scenes with him in DA2, I understood the character and was fascinated by where they were taking him through the end of the game, but I was only interested in him as a complex character they were developing. So many characters just don't change much over time. I'm still a lot surprised at how much I like him as a romance in DAI while still feeling they've continued that development (even if we all wish they could have done more); there were a dozen NPCs I was more interested in between DAO, DAA, and DA2.

Nice summary and I think very accurate! 10 years is a long time to grow and change and that's an excellent spectrum. After the whole Merideth fiasco, I am surprised he didn't start a little harder in DAI, especially since he's realized that both mages and templars are seriously flawed and he's now trying to reevaluate everything he's ever known. I would've really enjoyed peeling back his layers a little more....
