How about Trevelyan/Lavellan be the one who does the proposing if she wants it (with an alternate- "I love you" or something else to say if you don't wish to propose)?  That way there's no awkward unwanted proposal and everyone's happy?  ^_^

There doesn't have to be a wedding or any additional content, just that dialogue hinting at potential marriage.

As someone who plays a lot of SWTOR, declining a marriage proposal in a game is kind of awkward, even if you are nice about it and want to stay together. I don't know, it would still feel like pressure to conform to an expectation, even of there was a built-in escape hatch, and a lot of people would rather not have to even deal with it. From my experience, it's easier to headcanon in a proposal/marriage than it is to headcanon around an unwanted proposal.

Very definitely. Even with the most laidback LIs, that was awkward.

That wouldn't be a bad idea for an IQ initiated proposal, if they wrote it in for all the other LIs as well.

I have always wondered what kind of relationship they have.  He left home at an early age for the Templars who don't encourage family attachments.  He goes years without writing and is apparently not a good letter writer.  I don't think the game says when they saw each other last.  I think he cares about his family but I always saw it as a little distant.

I rather read it the same way. They don't really know each other any more. I could see Mia nudging him about it if she thinks its important (I haven't had the impression the writers consider formal marriage in Thedas that important unless it involved titles or inheritances. It doesn't seem to have any particular importance for the Chantry itself, even. Common law marriage has a fairly continuous and long history in some real world countries, including the United States, for various reasons.)

So what? Players who chose not to say "yes" to Cullen's marriage proposal simply would not get the extra dialogue. I was not suggesting there should be a wedding in the game-that would be nice but probably not in Bioware's line-up to do so- just a proposal.

If people feel as though the "Lake scene" is too soon, then perhaps at the end of the game when Cullen follows your Inquisitor into her room.

Just a suggestion and most likely won't happen. But it would have been nice.

And I'm not even going to comment on the lyrium bit, <bites tongue>.

Although a proposal would be cool, there is a point where Bioware has to decide what's really important in the game. The main story always comes first, and the romances are an added bonus that make the game more realistic. But if there becomes too much romantic content, it would overshadow the real purpose of the game, which is to build the inquisition and defeat Corypheus. A proposal worked in DAO because there was the new ruler dilemma anyway, so it flowed with the storyline. Adding a proposal in Inquisition would only leave us wanting more from the relationship (ie. dialogue addressing the marriage) so I think in this instance it's better to leave a proposal to head cannon. Also as an added reminder, marriage isn't a romantic event in Thedas, but rather a purely political one. A proposal from Cullen would realistically get a confused and negative reaction from the NPC's and the fans.

I didn't realize this - that's it's purely political in Thedas. I really need to read the books. It makes even more sense why Sera spit out her drink when the Inquistor says "let's get married".

I don't really wanna get involved in this marriage discussion again (we seem to repeat this same circular argument every week), but as a side note - the bolded isn't true at all, come on. We've seen plenty of married couples or characters throughout all three games that were not married out of some political maneuvre, but just because they loved each other. Aveline and Westley, Aveline and Donnic, Oghren and Branka, Oghren and Felsi, Goldanna and her husband, Delilah and her husband, Malcolm and Leandra, Zevran with his engagement earring, a myriad of married minor NPCs... even Sebastian on the friendship path proposes marriage out of love for Hawke, not for a political alliance. There is some level of politicking in arranged marriages among the highest of the highest nobility (the monarchs, rulers, heads of state) or in Tevinter with their magical eugenics, but marriage absolutely is a romantic event in this universe for anyone not in line for a throne. There's no reason why anyone in-universe would be confused or react negatively to a marriage proposal from most of the the love interests - people do get married out of love in Thedas. It's a thing that happens.

Generally, declining a marriage proposal is very awkward and can be the death knell of a relationship. If someone says "no," it usually means the person doing the asking didn't know the person they were asking nearly as much as they thought they did which leads to all sorts of discomfort and strain. I think it's safe to say that couples that don't marry by choice have discussed the relationship so that there is no proposal to make things awkward. My b/f and I have been together for over eight years and we've talked about it several times. He knows better not to even think of bringing a ring into the conversation. We don't need it. We're just as committed as a couple that has a piece of paper from the state. The only thing different about our relationship is that we still file our taxes separately.

I also wanted to add that I am not "anti-marriage." I'm actually photographing my cousin's wedding in the summer. I'm just of the personal belief that it's not important and that couples actively choosing to be marriage-free are fighting against a social norm. I lost count as to how many times I've had to explain to someone why we don't want to get married, and I still get a deer-in-headlights look in response. The minority is growing, however.  ;)

This could work, provided Bioware makes it so folks not wanting marriage would be just as "involved" in the relationship. Perhaps maybe even bringing up the conversation I spoke of above about being committed but not needing/wanting it. Either way, as someone said already, there are way more important things for Bioware to do than introduce extra content about marriage, which is precisely why leaving it to head canon is best so everybody can be happy.

Yes, this does come up quite frequently. I think I'm going to bow out of this one as well.

*edit* Crudballs! I tried adding this quote to my previous post.

You're right not all marriages are political, I should have clarified. I just think that with a marriage where the participants have some form of political power, it becomes more about politics that romance whether intended or not. I feel like a marriage between the general of the inquisition and the inquisitor would turn some heads and cause added pressure that's really unnecessary. For me the romance has a better chance of succeeding if it remains purely about love without the legalities tied to it.

BioWare has handled the marriage issue very well in the past, IMHO - sticking just to Dragon Age, with Zevran it was player-initiated, with Alistair it was political and player-initiated, and with friendmanced Sebastian it was a religious matter (my little asexual heart practically burst with joy over that one!). None of those involved adding any extra content beyond a few lines of text or dialogue. Wonderful modders like DahliaLynn ( ) could and did handle the rest, if necessary.  And yeah, marriage seems to be quite clearly not a purely political institution. In the Hinterlands alone there are three sidequests dealing with sick/deceased spouses of "common folk."

Count me among those whose Quizzies want to get out of the Inquisitoring game ASAP, if not by dissolving the Inquisition altogether then by passing the title to someone else. With Coryfish dead and the mage/templar troubles basically resolved, they would really, really like to move on. Fortunately my Trevelyan has Cullen to move on with; my Lavellan is stuck wondering where the heck her eggheaded boyfriend ran off to... <_<

I agree. Although I don't see it as him always having had a distant relationship with his family - even though Cullen is slightly dismissive of Mia's letters in the way that a younger brother might find an older sister overbearing, I think the reason he went for two years without writing was mostly due to a desire to avoid speaking about what happened to him at Kinloch Hold, and his continued lack of writing probably also associated with his inner conflict about his life up till the Inquisitor frees him from his burdens. It does seem like Mia's the only one who makes an effort to keep in contact with him, but maybe it's because the others just haven't been able to track him down as well as she can, by his own admittance. He spoke fondly of how he and his brother used to team up to deal with his sister, after all, so I feel like there was more of a potential peer-to-peer connection there? And since Mia was angry about him not sending a message for two years, I feel like he must have done so much more frequently prior to his torture - he still had friends as a young Templar, and he didn't start to shut people out of his social life till after the incident.

That's not to say I think he was a social butterfly in his youth - he's always been reserved and a teensy bit awkward, hee - but I think his anger/shame?/fear of being betrayed by people he trusted was what caused the rift between him and his family. It's entirely possible to headcanon that Uldred even tortured him with images of him hurting his family, since I don't actually think Uldred managed to dig deep enough to find Cullen's feelings about Amell/Surana judging by his surprised comments when you show up. In Mia's final letter to him in Inquisition she says something like "You sound happy. It's been a while since...nevermind" - I think she was about to say "it's been a while since you've sounded happy in your letters", maybe? Of course, Cullen's response is rather curt, but I think it's because he was feeling very awkward about her big sisterly prying and was just being stubborn, haha. So I'm thinking he used to sound much happier in his letters. Maybe he even gushed about Amell/Surana in them. yeaaahHHH

I don't feel that all of the LIs are inclined toward marriage though. Dorian for example would not have a positive view of marriage, so might initially refuse, laugh it off, or something along those lines (we actually had a discussion on this in the Dorian thread).

So then you run the risk of having the NPC reject your proposal. They certainly should be able to do that because I want them to have agency apart from the player, but it would REALLY suck to be rejected that way. I suppose the best alternative in such a situation would be for the NPC to say "Aw, that is so sweet... but, let me think about it."

Honestly, I don't really think this option could be done very well.

Perhaps a branch tree would solve this problem? Cullen could ask  "Sooo I'm curious. Where do you see...us, a few years from now?" And there could be lots of replies, maybe you want a lil' place for just the Inquisitor and Cullen. Or maybe you just want to focus on the Inquisition but need him at your side. One of the options could be a jokey "Why, is this a proposal Mr Rutherford?" which Cullen could nervously laugh at. The point is you put your feelings out there so if Cullen were to do it, no one would feel awkward because he won't propose to the Inquisitors that don't hint that it would be something they would like. And everyone would get the same amount of content no matter what you pick. My 2 cents :)

That would be awesome, but I doubt it since he seemed to keep his feelings about her deep down inside.  I agree with everything else you said here too.

So I was playing around and created another mage with a different world state, I think she might be my favorite.  I got through the first couple of hours and lost interest, though. I hate to be burned out on this game!

-snip-

That's the funny thing, though - he kept his romantic feelings for her deep inside, but it was painfully obvious to everyone around him that he liked her - and it didn't help that he used to lavish praise on her openly. You catch the two gossiping mages talking about how he says Amell/Surana is very talented, and one of them ends up saying "He would." It was probably a fairly common occurrence, LOL. I definitely can't see him admitting he was infatuated with Amell in a letter, but I could see him mentioning how talented a certain First Enchanter's apprentice is while speaking about his experiences as a new Templar. But that's just my headcanon, it's fine if you disagree! The AmellxCullen shipper in me is just showing again, oops. :P

Honestly, I don't either. But you can't offer it to one LI and not others (and Cullen already has one of the most developed romances---speaking as  someone with a character over 15 hours into that LONNNNGGGG dry spell between Solas's second kiss and whatever other romance content there may be without even the option to kiss him at will). And everyone's assuming Cullen's inclined to formal marriage. He may not be. The very idea may make him break out in cold sweat and run away. Just because people are calling other people their wife or husband doesn't mean they're formally married. A lot of couples in common law marriages refer to each other as wife and husband. I frankly don't care that much, I just don't see why people can't be satisfied with headcannon. I personally considered his question about the future to settle the fact they were staying together. If in your world, that means marriage, well, there was your proposal (which was entirely in keepng with his personality.)

On a less divisive subject:

I just had a really charming friendship conversation with Cass on my Dalish warrior (I've said before I think they're sisters, never mind the different races :P,)

And has anyone actually found all 48 missing copies of Hard in Hightown? I found 41, gave up and pulled up the Wiki, but they only had 3 of the ones I haven't found. One of those three, I apparently can't get to until more repairs are done. The other four have me completely stumped.

Are there some areas that don't open until later in the game? I can't get to the one through the north door off Vivienne's area, and I can't get to the one where Morrigan's Eluvian will be later (I overlooked that the first time through the Wiki list). I've been jumping down onto roofs and all sorts of s**t (I found a couple of codex entries I missed that way :P)

I also gave up and got the first kiss from Cullen in that PT even though I've been trying to pace it, partly because the Solas romance really has a huge gap in time (especially since I plan to do Abyss before WE-WH so his dance is still a LONG way off.)

Edited for top (speaking of that first kiss...):

Keep in mind that not all of us are involved in every discussion that occurs on this thread, we may pop in and out so some things may get repeated.  Discussing marriage head canons about Cullen seems enough on topic to me, but maybe I'm wrong.  If there is a list of acceptable topics, I'd love to see it.
