The tradeoff with the Samson quest not being as integrated with Corypheus is, of course, more Culleny goodness.

Unless you don't like what the Samson quest does to Cullen's character, in which case it's not so much "Culleny goodness" as it is "Culleny cringey-ness" but I've ranted quite enough about that, so... yeah. ;)  To each their own and stuff.

He does get a little into angsty vengeance-mode, but it's understandable since a lot of his former co-workers are either running around killing mages indiscriminately, killing civilians indiscriminately or hopped-up on red lyrium jungle-juice and killing everyone indescriminately...

But since he's angsted enough in the past two games and it disrupts the mellow guy he is in Inquisition, I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea?

You get one of the best romance lines and reaction in the game though - "A life without you? Never" * cutest smirk ever*.  Plus dagger throwing! Nice to see his skills in action.  I thought his reaction was justifiable, but since bringing up anything that was already discussed in the thread is verboten, I won't get into it further.

I don't see it as such.

From my perspective I cannot blame Cullen for feeling the way he does. Samson was a Templar and supposedly from Cullen's view he was a good one. And now for Cullen to see Samson fall even lower then he was before, well I cannot blame Cullen for being angry.

At the start of the Samson Hunt you can ask Cullen:

Inquisitor: "Are you angrier at Cory or Samson?

Cullen:"I don't know. Samson should at least know better."

We all have to remember too that Cullen took great pride in being a Templar, until it all went to sh!t. And now for him to see the order fallen so low no doubt angers him to the core.

But enough of that. We all have our views on such things :)

He does get a little into angsty vengeance-mode, but it's understandable (...)

But since he's angsted enough in the past two games and it disrupts the mellow guy he is in Inquisiton, I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea?

It's understandable, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. ;) And it's not really about Cullen getting angsty, it's more about him coming across as too bitter about.... certain things I'd expect him to be more understanding of, becoming so self-absorbed that he loses the perspective that he's an incredibly lucky one-in-a-million case, and ultimately losing the compassionate heart that's always been his strongest suit to me. That "version" of him was written for a certain type of player who believes in certain things about the DA universe and would like Cullen to mold into that same perspective,  and it works wonderfully for them. But I'm not that kind of player, and it doesn't work at all for me. He's been distanced enough from what originally interested me about him as it is that I don't need him to go that extra mile away.

I've come to think of it as mage side in general being Cullen's version of a rivalmance, and Templar side in general being his version of a friendmance. The analogy is not perfect, but it works well to underline what I mean by these different "versions" of Cullen. You know how some people prefer Sebastian's personality better on the friend path, and others prefer him on the rival path; or how some people can only tolerate friendmancing Fenris, and others will go rivalmance all the way? It's kind of the same thing here - I personally detest the person Cullen becomes on the mage side because of the Samson quest (I'm known to describe him as a "callous douchebag" on that path), but the person he is on the Templar side due to the lack of that quest is one of my top favorite love interests ever. Other players have argued they think he's "incomplete" or "shallow" on the Templar path, but that's cool to me, I understand it as different personal interpretations. It's not a matter of which side is better or worse (you know me, I hate these kind of competitions), just some players will prefer this and some will prefer that. I prefer Cullen's """friendmance""" but it's no business of mine if other players prefer him on the Samson path. Thus, to each their own. :)

It's not really verboten, I just added that note because the discussion about this has been heated before and feelings were hurt all around and I don't wanna be the one who rehashes these things again. I just wanted to comment on that (because it was pertinent) without starting a whole thing, you know? Call me overzealous, but most times I'll rather bite my own tongue than poke a hornet's nest.

I'm not romancing him this round... but I know there are heart options I'm not seeing... nor have ever seen.

... still bitter that I got stuck with Calpernia last playthrough.

Well darnit, I haven't had a chance to talk about it, so I'm gonna! Trust me I'm not the type of person to get hurt feelings over someone else's interpretation of fiction, no worries there.   :)

I've played both sides and I don't see it as one or the other is better other than my purely selfish/fangirl reasons for wanting more Cullen screentime, I like them both a lot for different reasons. I personally don't think either adds to or subtracts from Cullen's characterization, I just saw it as "here's Calpernia, and here's how we need to deal with her" and "here's Samson, here's how we need to deal with him". The difference with the latter being that Cullen has a personal relationship with the villain, so it's of course going to elicit a more personal reaction.  Nothing is more important to Cullen as duty and honor so watching a former good soldier fall so far is going to anger him, as it probably would any character in the game. In fact, if he didn't react as he did, it would have been very strange. You could even head canon it if you're in a relationship with him that he's hell bent on making Samson pay for almost killing his love. As far as the rivalmance comparison that some people are doing -  that's interesting, but Cullen isn't still angry about siding with the mages after you have that initial spat about it. He even says that he's pleased that the mages and templars are getting along at Skyhold.  That's my two cents about it.

I was really expecting to see some scarring on him myself aside from the new one on his face, haha. Not because I wish he'd have been physically hurt more or anything - I just figured it would come with the profession. Guess it's harder to get marked up when you're covered in metal 24/7, even if you've been a warrior for ten+ years. Templar armor must be excellent.

Plus...Cullen's scars are mostly on the inside anyway. Poor babe. ;-;

Anyways, thought I'd post a tiny glimpse of Cully's face from my celebratory memory painting while I wait patiently for the 5k to roll around. I'd have detailed his facehairs/lashes/etc more but the painting's not meant to be viewed this close up anyway so I allowed myself to be lazy:

Edit: Oh, top. Well, guess my chickenscratchy sketches will have to suffice. HOO

The difference with the latter being that Cullen has a personal relationship with the villain, so it's of course going to elicit a more personal reaction.  Nothing is more important to Cullen as duty and honor so watching a former good soldier fall so far is going to anger him, as it probably would any character in the game.

I don't deny Cullen his right to anger. He has every right to be angry. But like I said, his compassionate heart has always been his strongest suit to me - so to hear my Inquisitor show compassion for Samson's miserable life and subsequent downfall into an even worse fate, only to be continuously rebutted by an increasingly bitter, crude Cullen (who should understand better than anyone else the circumstances that led Samson to fall so low) felt absurdly out of character for him, contradicted his early game statement about "not agreeing with but understanding" the rebel Templars, and was overall a very hard pill to swallow to me. Anger is one thing; the callousness he displays in that quest is another. Again, it's all personal interpretations, but I just don't buy a Cullen to whom revenge is more important than compassion.

The line "he had choices" also makes me want to punch Cullen in the face kind of a lot. He, as a recovering addict himself, really should know better than to romanticize the situation as a matter of "choosing" to have your life ruined by addiction or not. Maker, that line makes me so angry.

As far as the rivalmance comparison that some people are doing -  that's interesting, but Cullen isn't still angry about siding with the mages after you have that initial spat about it. He even says that he's pleased that the mages and templars are getting along at Skyhold.  That's my two cents about it.

Ah, I didn't mean in regards to the faction choice itself, but rather the follow up to either side. It's nothing to do with how he feels about who you choose (he doesn't really like any of the options you can take there anyway), I used mage-side and Templar-side more as shorthands for the differences in personality I perceive in him as a result of the Samson/Calpernia quests. Like I said, it's not a very good analogy, the point was more... just as some people prefer rival/friend path Sebastian, in example, some people prefer mage-side/Templar-side Cullen, for the perceived differences in personality. I do know I'm in the minority, as most people will prefer to do BTD if only for extra Cullen screen time, but I personally feel that extra screen time actually detracts from his character, so I'm cool with not getting it on my preferred path - thus, my original comment (all the way up there) about "Culleny goodness" being "Culleny cringey-ness" for some players. But none of that has anything to with the actual mage/Templar choice, lol. Sorry for the confusion there.

Loving black Inquisitor in that comic, you don't see black Inquisitors enough ^^

Agreed! I've had trouble getting a Dalish to look right, but I have a really lovely dwarf. I'm thrilled that POC can actually look right in DAI, instead of like they just have a really dark tan. I'm just hoping the modders are able to give us more convincing short hair.

Those are wonderful! I'd love to see more myself. The first (unnamed) glimpse we had of Alistair in a trailer, I was certain it wasn't him because he looked way too young to be the same person. I don't think that was the final version, because the age is there in his face here, as well as confidence and just that touch of humor that Alistair has to have to be Alistair.
