Agreed! I've had trouble getting a Dalish to look right, but I have a really lovely dwarf. I'm thrilled that POC can actually look right in DAI, instead of like they just have a really dark tan. I'm just hoping the modders are able to give us more convincing short hair.

 

Those are wonderful! I'd love to see more myself. The first (unnamed) glimpse we had of Alistair in a trailer, I was certain it wasn't him because he looked way too young to be the same person. I don't think that was the final version, because the age is there in his face here, as well as confidence and just that touch of humor that Alistair has to have to be Alistair.

 

Yes, after spending hours staring at his face last night and this morning, I can confirm - 'tis definitely the Alistair I remember...actually hotter since he's more rugged and older.

I don't deny Cullen his right to anger. He has every right to be angry. But like I said, his compassionate heart has always been his strongest suit to me - so to hear my Inquisitor show compassion for Samson's miserable life and subsequent downfall into an even worse fate, only to be continuously rebutted by an increasingly bitter, crude Cullen (who should understand better than anyone else the circumstances that led Samson to fall so low) felt absurdly out of character for him, contradicted his early game statement about "not agreeing with but understanding" the rebel Templars, and was overall a very hard pill to swallow to me. Anger is one thing; the callousness he displays in that quest is another. Again, it's all personal interpretations, but I just don't buy a Cullen to whom revenge is more important than compassion.

 

The line "he had choices" also makes me want to punch Cullen in the face kind of a lot. He, as a recovering addict himself, really should know better than to romanticize the situation as a matter of "choosing" to have your life ruined by addiction or not. Maker, that line makes me so angry.

 

This is so interesting.  I am a fan of the angst (as you all know), but I actually agree that some of Cullen;s lines in this quest series strike me as...crappy (unsettling, callous...can't find the right word...).  So, my personal response was to write loads of dialogue where my romanced mage calls him out on it (I think I posted a snippet of that a while back).  Especially the way he talks about Maddox.  I always imagine that this is the first heated argument they get into, where she calls him out on some of it.  Great fodder for an angsty lover's quarrel, which is why I can totally see why some folks don't like it at all.

I had alyways noticed a similarity between them but now that I look at the pictures... they could be brothers. Which makes my above comment a bit creepy. LOL.

I personally thought that Cullen's intolerance of Samson's behavior was fittingly addressed in conversations with him about it - he specifically says that Red Lyrium left Samson's mind intact, so all of Samson's terrible crimes were committed while completely lucid. Samson claims what he did was to give the other Templars hope in a new cause, but I don't really understand how he logically thought joining Corypheus and forcing people into losing their minds/lives was the best way to go about it. Maybe partly it was due to a desire to feel important/in-charge again after the terrible things he's had to go through, and claiming he was being "merciful" was just an excuse to feel like a martyr.

 

There's no doubt that Samson also suffered a lot as a result of the Chantry's practices, and not everyone has the same sort of bravery or initiative to go cold turkey the way Cullen did, but at the same time I don't feel like it excuses Samson's choice to drag innocent lives down with him - and that's what Cullen is getting at. I can feel bad for Samson because the way his life spiraled out of control wasn't entirely his fault, but at the same time he did choose to bring others down with him. It's like how Cole says that he doesn't like killing people because people can change, but admits that in the end, they did have a choice. The Rutherford clan motto, "neither by chance, nor by destiny", reflects Cullen's ability to take charge of his life even though things are constantly out of control. Samson is the antithesis of that. If he hadn't been so prideful as to think he knew what was best for the Templars - to let them burn out in a blaze of glory - he could have even approached the Inquisition and found hope anew (and a proper Lyrium source). The Inquisition is where a lot of characters have their chance to start over, and I doubt it was a secret that there were ex-templars among its forces anyway.

Oh man. As hot as I find Alistair now, Cullen comes out ahead for me.  I might get exiled for saying so but I never found his looks extremely appealing in Origins, I fell in love with his personality - he is MUCH cuter now. And I personally prefer the all over scruff, I used to like goatees (my husband rocked a longer one for a while) but I don't care for them anymore.  I also find myself not caring for full-on beards as much as I used to, burnt out probably.

Does Alistair do it? I'm not sure. I will be sure to take some shots if he does. And when I get to King Alistair with another playthrough I will be sure to take some shots there as well, though there's only one conversation so I won't have much to play with.

I actually prefer Cullen's facial scruff. Alistair's is nice too though. Cullen's is definitely rendered better in-game.

I definitely agree with this, though. I felt like the way he sort of brushed off Tranquils/the idea of Tranquility as a mercy was unsettling, but I chalked it up to ignorance. I forget exactly what he said, but I remember not liking the tone he used when he said he'd been around Tranquils all his life but has no idea what might be going through their minds. But I was surprised myself that Maddox was willing to be so selfless in protecting Samson, and it seems like very few people actually understand the mechanics behind Tranquility anyway. Hopefully Cass can shed some light on things with her new knowledge about it and Cullen can, well, learn to consider the moral question of whether blocking the part of someone's mind that makes them human to make them pliable is all that different from controlling their minds through blood magic.

 

In the meantime, I'll just headcanon that I called Cullen out on it, too.

Alistair still takes the cake for me in terms of hotness (ignoring the DAI look, cause it did nothing for me at all). Cullen comes in at a very close second though.

Yes, you can. However, you can't pause cutscenes. The only real "pause" is if there is a conversation wheel where you are able to take your time. On the other hand, expressions are locked in whatever state the game decides it wants to be in during that conversation wheel. Sometimes you luck out, other times you get boring faces.

I noticed that watching some flycam vids - it's hilarious when the NPC is saying something with a lot of passion and then when it's your turn to speak, their expression goes blank.

 

Also your comment about the two scruffs - Alistair's looks much softer, and Cullen's much coarser. I'm seeing Cullen's rough scruff being put to good use in some smut fanfic...

Yes, that's the one that gets me most too. There's something in his expression that's very intense and thoughtful and determined; the maturity and, I dunno, experience that he hasn't let sour him? that DAO Alistair hadn't acquired yet.

It's so funny about the Dragon Age universe; three games now, books etc. and Bioware just leaves you wanting more.  I tip my hat to them.  I want more Alistair, more Cullen, more Cass, more Warden, more everybody.  I feel that way even more than Mass Effect which is another all time favorite.  Ack the snow is coming down REALLY hard now.

I've always had a big soft spot for Cullen and my female mage would have totally thrown Alistair under the bus for Cullen.     lol 

And that's saying a lot since I really like Alistair.

You guys - I'm listening to a playlist and Adele's "Someone Like You" just came on and damn, that's a perfect song for anyone who ships Cullen and Warden Amell, it could work from either perspective - if Cullen is still pining for an Amell that ends up with Alistair, or if Amell doesn't end up with Alistair and Cullen ends up with the IQ. I may be late to that conclusion.
