No, I think you're right, that he could start taking it again. I think the point is that he doesn't want to, even if it means he can't command the forces of the Inquisition.I have a question for all of your re: Cullen's lyrium addiction. He has that conversation with Cassandra about her watching him and potentially taking over, if I recall correctly.
If he becomes incapacitated, and can't function as the Commander, couldn't he just start taking the lyrium again? At that point would the withdrawal effects be irreversible? I'm confused.

Finished champions of the just, but Barras died. Time to reload from the start of the last fight in the hall, lol.
I completed that quest for my first time as well, but I never lost anyone since I was so paranoid and ran back after only a tiny bit of their health dropped.

*sad face* I just did Champions of the Just today and couldn't get that to trigger either. Good to see it, but ugh.
I get it every time, but I think Melissa may be onto something about going straight into his cell, as... that's what I always do. Go straight into Cullen's cell, then do the rest of that level.
If you ask him to be back to Lyrium he'll feel physically better but he'll be very very bitter. And your relationship with him becomes quite strained.
Not really. Aside from minor dialogue differences (no mention of "without lyrium" when talking about dreams) and one conversation that happens differently (the prayer one, where he's angry with himself, not the Inquisitor), the rest of the romantic relationship happens exactly the same. There's nothing that indicates the relationship is more or less strained one way or another.

Well, this is what confused me. I don't see Cullen leaving the inquisition without a commander, as much as he wanted to stop taking the lyrium.

I didn't figure out that they regained health when you ran back if you cleared the hall and waited and they got pretty far down the first time, so I think I let it run down too far. Sadly, I can't save him without replaying more than I'm willing to do, sigh. I thought he was OK and kept going because he was still on his feet.

LOL, well that isn't as bad as having Alistair sacrifice himself for his true love at the final battle....when she intended to sacerfice herself. Long story short I had to replay the whole battle from the very beginning...on nightmare. You'll be able to do it next time, just run like hell and stay put!

There is another difference, I think (but someone correct me if I am wrong). I think it changes his answer to the question "if I were a possessed, would you kill me?" if you are a mage. I think without lyrium he says something like "Please, don't ask me this, it's not that simple." but ON lyrium, I think he says something much harsher (but I can't recall what it was, only that is what quite mean). Does that sound right to anyone who has done the science?
Here is the link that made me think this, but don't know if they are romanced...

If the hall runs down to 30% I think, then he'll die. If any companion says to get back to the hall then that's a cue, and if Barris ever says that he's injured then he'll die.

Oh, also, in regards to the Cullen dialogue in the cell not firing...someone (somebody on here, I think) told me to be sure to go in the cells BEFORE lighting the veilfires, cause if you start lighting the fires, the dialogues cut out. And that worked for me, so that might be the trick!

I know what you mean. I think the point is that he wouldn't be leaving it without a commander, because they'd have Cassandra. Plus he could still be part of the Inquisition, just not as one of its leaders. I think his choice to go back on the lyrium is right on the hairy edge, tho, which is what the others are referring to from his personal quests. He gets really torn about what to do, even chastising himself, "I will not give less to the Inquisition than I gave to the Chantry! I should be taking it!" I think, without the Inquisitor's intervention, he might very well have gone back on the lyrium for the Inquisition's sake. It's the Inquisitor him/herself that can convince him otherwise to take care of himself, and that the Inquisition will still be OK.
If the hall runs down to 30% I think, then he'll die. If any companion says to get back to the hall then that's a cue, and if Barris ever says that he's injured then he'll die.
Yes, this. If the hall ever gets below 30% he'll receive a wound that ends up being fatal after the battle is over.

Gah. You guys are scaring the crap out of me. This is my next quest
EDIT: Any tricks, without giving any spoilers away, to saving him?
Update on Aliss: She is fun, but I miss my elf!
I even miss Bull a little bit. Eventually I may create a cute redheaded elf for him to have fun with. Now that I know what the romance is all about, it won't be so shocking going in. It just did not work for Auren, at all. My fault for going in with a pre-determined character.
Mods can't come fast enough. I thought, in a perfect scenario, I'd have trouble choosing b/w Solas and Cullen, but that was ridiculous. I still pine for my man lol One day, one day, darlin.
In other news, I gave up waiting for the "macho" Dorian someone was purportedly working on (lol) and just downloaded the "no mustache" mod. Mr. Tevinter will be my next romance ^^

Oh, I replayed my Aeducan from the DR decision both ways on purpose, took the US by leaving Ali at the gate, but also reran by talking him into the DR so I had saves both ways (that was before I knew the Keep would let us chose regardless.) I didn't play on nightmare, though. That was one of my complicated PTs since she let Ali break up with her after the Landsmeet and cheerfully started a romance with Zevran, but knew Ali was still in love with her (which he will say). But she was a princess, after all. I rather liked the final scene where she lived - Gorrim, Alistair, and Zevran, all her men in the room together. ![]()

Yes, and I heard him say something. I just wasn't aware of that until I'd completed the whole thing, and I spent too much time lost trying to find the veterans to replay it, even for Barris.
NO NO NO. YOU MUST GO BACK AND SAVE THAT GORGEOUS MAN.
I promise, I understand how to do it and will save him next time, hon, and he'll live in the Keep at least. But Champions took me 3x as long as Hushed Whispers - I got SO lost repeatedly. I even refought the final battle in the hall and Envy once. But redoing the entire thing searching for the veterans...no. Not even for that handsome hunk.

That's the one problem I'm sure it wasn't, lol. I think Cole was glitched; I went into the room with the veilfire 3x before he showed up in there, or before the veilfire lit up.

The best part is that Dorian's like "didn't even notice..." just as they're walking by. Talk about Bedknobs and Broomsticks!

SAVE A LOT. It can be a little tricky sometimes. If the hall ever gets below 60%, I would stop whatever you are doing and return immediately to the center area (you'll understand when you get there) to fight off the bad guys in the center hall, and that way the hall restores to full health.
Also, heads up, there is an upstairs area on both wings that have stuff that you need, so if you're not sure where to go during that section, look to go upstairs. I spent like 20 minutes looking for something in a certain room, only to figure out that it was actually in the room directly above me, one floor up.
Also, just enjoy it. I found the Templar quest to be very well written. The concept of it was extremely well done.

Well... The blacksmith scene seems to be really... strained. And he did the break up too. At least I saw it as quite strained. Hehe I must've over-thinking that probably, or interpreting things differently. There's so much subtleties that can be seen in either way IMO.

The answer to your question is spoiler of his personal quest.
Spoiler
I think this is open to personal opinion. There really is nothing that points to the relationship being strained, as ninetozero pointed out. There actually is nothing in-game that even says that Cullen is better off following through with not taking lyrium. For all we know, he could end up worse in a dlc by choosing not to let him take it. This is something that remains to be seen.
I really hate getting into this discussion (again), so I think I'm going to leave it there (and get back to processing more fantabulous Alistair pics). This is always a topic of contention that can get rather heated. ![]()

I have to agree now that I've played it, I think it was well-written. Just extremely frustrating for someone like me who gets turned around and lost easily. I did go with conscripting the Templars, for various reasons. Eventually I'll run through and ally with them though.
Edit: the initial fade scenes are even creepier when it's your own IQ...

I'd suggest to run back to the main hall after quick scan of each room. Do 1 room quickly, ignore all enemies, back to main hall, run quickly to second room, back to hall etc. Ignore as much enemies as you can, and when your team mate start to say "we'd better be back to the hall" that means it's already 50% health drop. Don't battle all enemies, not enough time.

If you disbanded the Templars, it's not even worth going back to save Barris, as apparently you don't get his war table missions and you're not able to promote him anyway, as you would by allying with the Templars freely. (at least that's what most people on his thread reported, haven't tried the disband option myself)

That's just a bug. You can still get Barris' war table missions and promotion scene if you disband the templars.
Not sure what actually causes the bug though.
