Stronger than "Maker's Breath" though; I mean we had "Christ's Wounds!" which eventually became "Zounds!" (LOL) and was considered a rather strong curse. I think when you reference the blood or wounds or bodily flesh of the deity or saint or prophet it's considered a strong curse.

Just not vulgar in the modern sense  (No arse or balls or t!ts lol)

Well talk about vulgar, his cuss in DA:O was "Garbage!" LOL So, yeah, not exactly an "Andraste's t!ts!" kind of a guy.

Regarding lyrium withdrawals, I'll link to the first fic I read that actually turned me into a Cullen fan. There's lyrium withdrawal based on what we knew from Origins. Yes, it's 40 chapters but it's really good and I'm just linking to it for science. ;)

What We Become

Gah so good!! First time reading it and highly recommended to all cullenites! And they're short little chapters, don't fear :) haven't finished yet but thanks so much for sharing this!!

So are the codex entries from the most recent game considered canon? Because the Templar entry in Inquisition says this:

"Lyrium use is regulated by the Chantry, but some Templars suffer from lyrium addiction, the effects of which include paranoia, obsession and dementia."  Notice the word "some". This entry is written by the First Enchanter of Starkhaven in 8:80.  I'm not trying to nitpick or argue I just want to understand how it all fits together with Cullen's struggle.  Maybe it's like IRL some people have more addictive traits than others. (apologies if this has been addressed and I missed it)

DA:I uses many of the same codices from the previous games. They tend to add instead of change and replace them. If you look up that codex in the wiki, for example, you'll no doubt find it's identical to the DA:O one. So canon... notwithstanding subsequent retcons and errors. :P

For example, even the new DA:I codices on the Seekers,  breaking of the Nevarran Accord, and Justinia's conclave all have conflicting dates.

So it is canon that not all Templars become addicted to lyrium, Cullen being one of the addicts?

It's a reused DAO codex, as R2 said. However, all Templars suffer from lyrium addiction, period. All that varies is how quickly one becomes addicted. But there will be addiction, period.

No. All Templars become addicts due to the lyrium consumption. All that differs is the rate at which one gets addicted.

All Templars are addicted to lyrium. The degree of addiction and how each individual Templar deals with their own addiction and withdrawal varies. Some, like Cullen, seem to have a "soft" addiction and are able to quit cold turkey and suffer minimal effects (that we've seen, remember he's stopped months ago at the time he tells you this, we don't know how bad the first few weeks were). Some, like Samson, are severely addicted to the substance, to the point that they can barely fuction without it. Some, like Irminic, suffer severe immediate withdrawal symptons, getting to such terminal dementia and physical deterioration in only a week without lyrium that they'd rather die.

It's like any real world addiction. Some people will come off clean, some will burn out. There's no one answer that fits all.

Very true, but so far, no one has managed to buck lyrium yet.

Where are you getting that from if the codex says otherwise? I haven't read any of the books.

Yay! I'm glad you guys like it. :) It's one of my top two DA fics ever. And I love the way the author writes Leliana.

The games as well as the books....lyrium addiction is absolutely definite the minute you take the first sip. All that varies is how long it might take.

You know what makes me curious? The rate of success in that Templar-siding Cassandra-Divining ending, that says many Templars are following Cullen's example and trying to quit the dust. Certainly some would be able to sober up, specially among the younger/just recently inititiated Knights, but certainly there would be just as many tragic failures and deaths too... you never know how you're gonna come down on that gamble. I can see the senior Templars, who've been taking it much longer, being very reluctant to toy with death like that and just choosing the lesser risk of staying on the lyrium until either a safer way is found, or duty takes them.

It would be very interesting to see  how this idealistic ending turns up in a not so ideal world... as well as to get a realistic answer to how do Templars keep their Templar abilities if they have no lyrium to draw power from.

Fairly certain the epilogue states that those that do break their addiction to Lyrium, do it to become seekers.

Unless you told Cassandra not to rebuild them, but doesn't she rebuild regardless of your suggestion if she becomes divine?

If mages become free, circles broken, they don't really need their powers any longer do they? Or they would need a smaller number just to battle evil mages.

It is indeed curious to see how it will end up. Particularly, we will have to redefine what it means to be a Templar, if these warriors no longer can disrupt magic. Southern Thedas seriously needs Templars to keep magic in check.

Also, I want to know how many will try to become Seekers.

I'm sorry this will be a quickie question and the other threads are scary - anyone know what the most valuable material you can get early on in the game in the Hinterlands? I'm gonna exploit that resell cheat.

lol that is never happening in my game, so I need more concrete answers. ;) The Templar abilities that keep magic in check are still needed, so either the lyrium is still needed, or we need alternatives like the Seekers. But how do we make more Seekers? Tranquilize every Templar and revert their tranquility? Or do we develop new ways to draw power from lyrium without ingesting it, develop safety measures to avoid addiction, develop some new non-magical abilities/skills to counter magic? The Orlesian Chevaliers are trained to fight mages without any debilitating abilities after all, the dwarven warrior caste and the Legion of the Dead fight darkspawn emissaries without those too... so there are alternatives. We just need to figure out where the Templars are going from here.

I believe the resell exploit has been fixed in the latest patch? In any case, there is at least one sure spawn of Fade-Touched Obsidian that you can farm for crafting and/or reselling  (take everything but one item in the chest, leave the area and come back and the Obsidian will respawn) in the Redclilffe house with a master lock.

We would have to invest a lot of time and energy into magical research (a good way to give some mages a bit more freedom). I imagine that with Cassandra on the throne, she would look into safer ways of granting templar powers to the Order.

I don't think its a good idea to let so many Templars try to undergo the Rite, as I imagine that Spirits of Faith do not come to any but the most faithful of people. I'd imagine that the vast majority would fail utterly.

I wonder what happens to a non tranquil person touched by a spirit of Faith....maybe those are just Spirit Warriors.

I could see that as being a reason why the Seekers kept it a secret

Yeah, that's so not happening in my game.  I don't see that Templars, or the ability to fight magic, will ever not be needed.

I only ever pick between two Divines, Cassandra or Viv.

I think the early entries on lyrium from DA:O also include the fact that, (a) all codexes are still written from a certain point of view, and even Genetivi is a mouthpiece of the Chantry, and (b ) in DA:O, they were still considering implementing lyrium addiction in game as having diminishing results with time, perhaps with the notion that addiction is only for some templars. I think it's clear that there have been a number of adjustments since then, Alistair's situation as Prime Example #1, and DG has said several times that the story doesn't match gameplay in DA:O.

They have been much more specific in the interim. I think Evangeline comes out and says it, point blank, that all templars are addicted.

LOL Aaaand, in poking around for the quote, I give you a couple of other times we've discussed this... HERE and HERE

From Asunder:
"Once that is gone, I'll have perhaps a week before I start to feel the effects Within a month, perhaps two, I'll go insane."

"You're addicted."

"And there's nothing to be done about it. The Chantry controls the supply of lyrium, and thus t hey control the templars. There is no turning back from the order once you're within."

LOL, I don't think one would have to pay attention for more than a few weeks to know how often we discuss the same things, and I'm past my one-year lurkiversary now (coming up on one-year postiversary soon). But now that the game's out I've found myself disinterested in discussing his romance; I'm not one to gush, or to read other people's gushing. So until we have grounds to speculate about whether sales have been good enough for them to change their mind about an expansion (our best hope for significantly more Cullen content since he probably won't be in DA4), or about Cullen's role in some story DLC, I'm just happy to talk about lyrium, Cullen's pre-Templar family life, swears Cullen would or would not use, whether Cullen having a canning and pickling hobby is canon, etc., even if all but the last of those had been picked over for years even before Ellisgate 1.0. :)

I still don't think it's 100% clear that everyone who takes it is hooked, especially from their first draught; Cullen and Cassandra both mention templars being upset about lyrium as a counterpart to mages being upset about being imprisoned, so Evangeline is (like Halden, First Enchanter of Starkhaven, who "wrote" the Templar codex entry implying they're not all hooked) probably also a little biased, and as I think you've mentioned several times over the course of these discussions, lyrium in general is one of those areas where there seem to be variable answers to the big questions even among sources that should all be canon. I definitely don't have time right now to reread Asunder or replay any of the games keeping an eye out for this, though (wooooo dissertation!), so I'm not going to push it.

(EDIT: *ppbbbbllllttt* to you all, Softened Leliana all the way ;))
