His arc is pretty captivating in DA2, awesome voice notwithstanding. When you first meet him as Hawke he's kneeing someone in the groin, then ends fighting at your side. Let's just ignore the fact that it takes him a while to catch on if you're a mage, that's just poor writing.
R2 you've mentioned that Greg Ellis doesn't know much about the character, which I find super interesting. Wouldn't they give him some Cullen background so he can hit the right emotions, or do they just say "be angsty here about this, be in love during this line"?
I was always wondering about how it works. Have never been to a sound studio.
Pretty much. If you watch the videos of the VAs you can see that they get a screen with a table on it with the line and how to say it. Then, I think it was Allegra who mentioned that they'll get to hear the other character's line before they respond.
I think for Greg, tho, he's so very busy and does so much voice work for so many games that smaller roles like Cullen just don't stick. He's not a gamer and has never played Dragon Age, so the whole big picture is missing for him. For contrast, that's why folks gush about FPJ and Allegra being different, since they know so much about the game. (edit: I should say that this came as a surprise to us, too, when we first started interacting with him; he barely remembered who Cullen was. I think that's why he got in trouble that first time for telling us he was doing Cullen VA work back in 2012)
... and since illustrations are good
, a DA2 Culleny BAMF moment

Over a decade ago I worked at a localization office (yeah, my English was way better then
). Depending on the developer and/or publisher we sometimes got biographies for the characters - which helped a lot. Usually this was the case for big titles, proabably because they are very dialogue heavy. I'm not sure but I could imagine that voice actors get biographies, too. I agree, though, that Cullen is probably just one of many voice acting jobs that Greg Ellis does and that he forgets about the character once his work is done. (Although, he must have so much interaction with Cullenites by now that he will probably remember Cullen for the rest of his life
.)
We had a so called "black box" at our localization office that allowed us to listen in to the voice recordings at the studio. When actors had a recurring role people at the sound studio played the old recorded lines for them because they usually didn't remember their characters or which tone their voice was. By hearing their old lines they could get back into character. So, if Greg doesn't remember Cullen it would be nothing uncommon and appearently happens to other voice acters, too. And yeah, that makes it really cool to have voice actors who are fans themselves. Allegra uploaded several of her Quizzies on Twitter. It's quite entertaining, actually. LOL.
(I didn't want to contradict you, I just wanted to add
. )
Edit:
Polygone has an article about video game voice recording. It is about Defence Grid 2 but mentions Jennifer Hale.
