Am I the only one who headcanons that place Cullen takes the Inquisitor near Honnleath is a river instead of a lake?  The first time I saw it, I thought we were in the Fallow Mire and wondered how anyone could have found it peaceful or beautiful.  I half expected to see bodies floating in the water and was prepared to start harvesting diseased flesh.  Now, I close my eyes and imagine the water sounds like it's moving, instead of some stagnant, still body of water and I'm less disturbed.

 

Just sayin', the location of the scene is taken at Crestwood (but we know that BW just re-use the environment, I doubt that it's really Crestwood). The place is really pretty in that spot. It's near the southern entrance bridge.

This is not to say that one man is fundamentally better than the other.  But I don't see their places as so easily interchangeable.

Very aptly put, well done! I totally agree. Even though I've just finished a Red Lyrium Cullen painting (which was fun in its own right in terms of technical execution), this is part of the reason I never could really get into the whole Red Lyrium Cullen thing, besides the fact that I don't feel like imagining Cullen suffering any more than he already has, haha.

 

And long posts are absolutely welcome, I love reading in-depth analyses of characters and their motivations. Maker knows I'm guilty of writing walls of text myself sometimes

Oh, that pond is pretty. My reaction, however, was that it was nighttime and a still body of water. If you two are about to start losing any clothes, I hope you brought the mosquito repellant!

 

The codex entry ruins it a little... because that if that's Crestwood, the pond is just a sinkhole that darkspawn poured out of during the Blight, but luckily the dam and heavy rain caused it to flod and thus drowned the 'spawn before they could attack the village.

 

I don't know how anyone could get turned on by that... well, except for perhaps Wardens?

But even in DA2 Samson got kicked out of the Templar & Maddox made Tranquil due to Meredith being... well, Meredith. I wonder however, if ever Meredith was more like Greagoir, what would Cullen be? He won't be second in command IMO.

 

I think that's probably why she originally picked him as her XO, because she figured that his experiences during Uldred's rebellion would foster in him a similar kind of hatred of magic that she held?

 

It does make me wonder if perhaps she might have limited his power after finding out this was not the case, because despite being her second-in-command, Cullen seems to have had very little power over the Templars, or that much knowledge of what his subordinates were getting upto? Or perhaps Meredith always hogged all the power, because crazy or not, she's does seem the kind of person who has to micromanage everything?

 

Actually, I think Greagoir is probably the kind of Templar that Cullen ended up becoming in the end? Greagoir might have been a tad harsh at times (like sentencing Lily to Aeonar), but that seems a little par for the course when it comes to people who associate with blood mages? Otherwise, the guy at least tried to be fair to the mages and had a lot of respect for Irving, as much as they bickered?

 

(I do wonder what happened to Greagoir and Irving after the Circle's fell? Given how loyal they were to the Chantry, were they at the Conclave?)

I mused over there that we get signs that Samson might have been far more moderate of a Templar and far more indifferent to magic than Cullen was, since he distrusted magic for a very long time?
 
Assuming that his motivations were selfless and not self-serving in some way, Samson helped Maddox deliver a love letter, helped mages escape Kirkwall (even if some did accidentally get sold to slavers) and helped rescue the Tranquil when the Circle's fell apart, all of which Cullen would have not done in his position... and for the last one, later regrets that he didn't?
 
It's interesting that Samson might have been kicked out for being an objectively "nicer" Templar than Cullen, whereas Meredith kept Cullen because she wanted to kindle his distrust of magic into the same kind of paranoia she had?

I don't think it's fair to compare DA2 Cullen's "niceness" to mages with Samson's. In his "unperturbed state", i.e. at the start of DA:O, Cullen is friendly to either the male or female mage Warden, and in the latter case speaks highly of her to anyone who will listen, refers to her magical ability as a "talent", and invites her to have friendly personal conversations with him more often. Kindness to Maddox aside, if Samson couldn't get through standard templar duties responsibly, I doubt he'd have come out even as level-headed as early DA2 Cullen if Uldred had happened to him. And even though he ran letters for Maddox, the fact that Samson refers to the mage-templar collaboration against Meredith as "going against everything that's natural" or something to that effect in DA2 doesn't leave me thinking he ever thought of mages as equals.

Owlfruit is a Shitty Cullenite confession: I couldn't get all the way through it and wimped out before that point. Even if I didn't already love him for his work being such a standout in all three games, I'd love the hell out of him for being so generous with his fans with this stuff. But it's somehow really weird for me to hear almost-but-not-quite-Cullen's-voice (I feel like he does it a bit nerdier in these, but not in the same way DA2 Cullen was a little... prissier? than DAO or DAI Cullen) saying almost-but-not-quite-in-character things. Sort of like how it's hard to listen to recordings of yourself.

It actually says this in Cullen's DA2 codex. She liked that he his views on magic were similar to hers.

Kael I've had him planned out months before the game came out. (Both Kael and Auren were pre-planned and I did try to construct names that seemed to use elven roots.) He was originally supposed to romance Bull, and I think it would've really worked out, too, but unfortunately I already romanced Bull and don't feel inclined to do so again. I guess Dorian then. Such a shame b/c once again I felt immediate chemistry with Solas lol Bah. Fortunately Kael was never the type to go for Cullen. Probably because Cullen x Auren is my OTP ahem >.> Yes, anyway.

Unfortunately I've once again screwed up the lips. While in the CC, all I did was ghost over "lip color" (didn't even attempt to change anything), and the lips suddenly turned bright red. Like, WTF? So that meant I had to painstakingly attempt to use the lip color and lip liner to create a natural color lip. I got the color and liner to be the exact same color in CC but of course once I start playing the lip liner is clear as daylight. Oh well. We'll say it's chapstick

Eh, it could had turned out worse. He could had looked like "Beauty", the IQ that one of the Devs made.  I always find the lip color annoying when it comes to males, like really...lip shine and bright pink lips?! No...

 

I like his smile! He looks fairly impish which would mean that Sera would have a riot with him. Is he sarcastic or sweet? Dorian pounces on both.

That's why I joined tumblr. People were blogging my screenshots, but because I didn't have my own blog, I wasn't getting credited. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Not sure if it's good, but I've already gotten over 150 followers in like a week. 

 

As a side thought - I'm currently in the Fade and I came across the little graveyard. Not all of the stones are marked, so I got to counting. There are just enough for everybody including Hawke and the Warden (Alistair/Logain/Stroud). There has to be some significance to the unmarked one with the bottle of red lyrium - do you guys think it could be Cullen's? That would make a lot of sense for that to be his greatest fear (especially if your IQ recruited the mages and are thus working on Before the Dawn):
