Agree. This is my interpretation as well. He'd rather have them gossip than there be no reason  to gossip at all, i.e., not getting involved with her. So he's willing to risk the gossip to be with her, which is sweet. I just can't imagine him *wanting* to be gossiped about, given how he doesn't seem particularly forthcoming with personal matters.

Does that mean he wouldn't want people to know about the relationship? I dunno. TBH, I think someone getting involved with their superior is something that *should* be raising eyebrows, and while it's clearly not prohibited, it's something that should be undertaken with decorum and circumspection. Really, like any workplace romance. So, while I don't know that he'd be sneaking around, I would expect him to keep the relationship on the down low.

I'm not sure, the idea of workplace romances, etc. are pretty modern concepts. And while the Inquisitor is in command, the advisers and companions don't appear to be in fealty to the Inquisitor and retain a lot of power and control of the organization, especially the forces directly under them. I do see him as rather private, but I also think he wouldn't want to feed gossip by doing things that suggest he's embarrassed. Of course, a lot might depend on the specific Inquisitor's attitude, and I'm sure they left that to headcannon so we can all imagine it the way we think makes sense. But I imagine my Inquisitor and him spending the nights together in one room or the other without necessarily trumpeting that fact. (Hopefully that makes sense, lol.)

But, look at the environment he grew up in. Fraternization was strictly prohibited. I honestly expected that to be a hangup for him.

But I also agree. I think he'd be fundamentally a private person... all our jokes about his exhibitionism notwithstanding. :P

Right.. but he doesn't do that until the end, and they set it up as a big moment. Like, to the Void with my concerns beforehand, I'm going to hug her in front of the whole damn army, because we're all happy to alive. Yay.

Plus, he also mentions in his initial reservations that one of his reservations is that she's the Inquisitor.

The hug is fairly romantic, nobody  hugs their fellow soldiers like that  :P  and yes it could be a "sod it all I'm hugging her" moment (although the set up the fact that he waits for her to walk up doesn't implies spur of a moment to me), but you have more dialogue about IQ reservation on her being a mage than her being Inquisitor. I mentioned before, he is concerned but only up to the point where she gives him the green line .

Also, a thought, his concern about her being the Inquisitor is fairly neutrally put "You are Inquisitor...." this leaves room for interpretation, because being Inquisitor doesn't implies only rank, it also implies the way people see her, basically what Varric explain about people seing her a symbol, something above them. So it could be about the rank, it could be about the nature of Inquisitor and her , being something this  special, willingness to  accept him and it could be about both.

So I wanted to share this with you guys. I love getting exposure to newer artists and "orchestral dubstep" is one of my favorite genres:

https://www.youtube....h?v=YvZHfD_uzCg

It totally has that "epic RPG" feel to it.

To stay on track, here's the lake date scene for Rhiannon and Cullen:

The way I take it is that he's normally so straight-laced and business professional. However, I can picture him practically pulling out his hair and biting his nails in suspense whenever the IQ is away - he just can't let anybody see it. When she returns from the final battle, I see him practically bouncing on his toes waiting for her to climb those stairs and then finally he can't hold it back and gives her a hug in front of everybody. The way Cullen keeps himself in control and then just explodes is one of the things I like most about him - totally sexy. I see a lot of parallels between him and another dayum smexy character - Elijah from The Originals (yes, I watch The Originals - I am not ashamed!) Elijah is always seen wearing a perfectly put together suit - is all professional and business. He smolders with the best of them. And when he can't contain himself anymore OMG watch out.

Not wanting folks to gossip about their relationship is completely understandable, especially for such a "high profile" couple like being the #1 and #2 of the Inquisition. I wouldn't say he's ashamed of their relationship or even wants to keep it secret - it's just that it's really nobody's business. I liken that to any celeb that doesn't want to be in the tabloids.

Not sure if you guys saw this, but Greg Ellis tweeted recently that he's joining another "iconic video game franchise"!! I can't even imagine what it could be, but I would cry if he showed up in the Elder Scrolls series.

haha, that's a nice image :D  .

I do see Cullen as someone who is constantly in control, especially  considering his lyrium situation, he would not be able to pull it off if it was not in his nature to always give 100% of himself and be in control. And i also see him as an introverts, considering the things he says about his childhood at the lake, I don't particularly see him as a shy introvert though, just one who needs to unwind away from social noise, he can be very arrogantly cocky, as shown when he wins Dorian at chess and even during the Wicked Grace game. I love the way his character is written to the bits, because it is very multidimensional.

Okay we seem to bounce from one consensus to the next from day to day around here >.< When I was working on my fic, it seemed agreed upon that Cullen was reluctant to initiate the romance between himself and the inquisitor because of the difference in rank. But now everyone seems to agree that he has no issues with that whatsoever.

Well, I wrote that the reason he and the inquisitor never got together during the course of the game was because he felt it might be inappropriate (but also because he feared his affections were one-sided). I'm hoping this won't be considered ooc by readers :( What do you guys think?

It's open to personal interpretation - if that's how you want to write it, then go for it!

I think that the changing consensus means that you can write whatever you want and get away with it as long as it's about Cullen :P

I definitely think it's in character for Cullen to hesitate because of rank. And very much in character to hesitate because of believing his feelings are not reciprocated.

I think it makes perfect sense as one possible reason. No one's headcannon is going to perfectly match everyone else's, after all, and all of us play our Inquisitors differently. The Inquisitor herself or himself has to be somewhat direct before he's willing to proceed, I think. Even though I think fraternization in general is too modern an idea for it to be a problem, R2 is also correct that he spent many years in the Templars, and he may be equating their relationship to that. Post-Cory, though, it makes perfect sense for that to change.

Even though they wrote a romance a certain way, with certain timing, it doesn't mean the possibility of a different timing couldn't happen (it would just not be reflected in a WS later.) Most relationships don't have such a narrow window of possibility that events can only proceed one way and one way only. I've imagined several possible alternatives, mostly involving post-Cory starts to relationships (particularly Blackwall) that would make sense (barring anything they have in mind that we haven't seen yet.)

Lol, guys what is up with Carroll?! Did he have some gleaming moment in DA:O, because it seems that people really love the guy? I just found him to be a sarcastic ass...did I miss some dialogue or codex entry? Keep in mind I was playing a very persuasive*female* human noble.

His best lines come from using Sten, Morrigan or Leliana to persuade him.

He makes some pretty funny comments depending on who you have in your party. I remember letting Morrigan handle him once, and and I let Sten handle him another time. Probably some of the funniest dialogue in Origins.
