Awww that poor pissed off man. Great shot though! Alas, few things can prepare a steadfast military man for the tittering frivolity of annoying Orlesians...they can't all be as amazing as Leliana

Edit: it looks like you used the black and red attire mod on nexus? And I take it it didn't break your game? All those disclaimers about liability and backing up saves and how we're all mod beta testers scares the crap out of me but I gotta do something to change up my 3rd playthrough. I'm using the camera zoom mod for conversations, and phew, that's A LOT of chesty Bull conversations! :D

Yeah, I was using the white/blue Halamshiral Finery, which was really nice, but it washed Cullen out and would wash Rhiannon out even moreseo. The black/red suits them both very nicely.

I don't know much about modding at all, but I know it's a huge pain with this game because every time a new patch comes out, mods need to be re-patched. And your saves can break if they were made with a newer version of the patch (which will happen if you just remove your modded patch and try to go back to vanilla. Fontofnothing showed me a very handy trick to make sure my modded patch is the same version as my vanilla patch, so my saves will never break. It's so simple I don't know why mod authors don't have that as part of their install process.

So far, I've never had a mod break my game. I currently use several:

  • finery re-color
  • Human female jammy retex
  • Elf female jammy retex
  • Qunari female jammy retex
  • Human male jammy retex
  • Shantia's CC brow replacments
  • Shantia's #2 texture replacer (with brows)
  • fonofnothings #3 texture replacer (w/o brows) that adds custom eye liner
  • leather trouser replacements for armor that uses grey jammy bottoms
  • recolor of Josie's "big bird" outfit. It turns it black/dark blue...is absolutely gorgeous. It'll take a screenie later.

Hmm, all the jammy retex mods are by race and gender? Oh, man, somehow I suspect that's not good news for dwarves.

There are several out there for dwarves...even ones that have the cutest nug pattern.

I forgot that I also use HD Eyes.

I'm finding that's actually a rather good thing, because you can set very distinct casual looks for each race, without swapping files around every time you want to play a different character. Dwarves have less retextures than humans so far (though elves have the most retextures out of all), but the ones I've seen specifically for them are very pretty and appropriately dwarven-like.

HD Eyes? I am getting a copy of DA:I for my PC soon, so I am making a list of some mods that I might use. However, what is so special about HD Eyes? The eyes are a pretty good quality on the PS4:

To be honest, there really isn't a whole heck of a lot of difference. It makes the "squigglies" in the eyes more apparent.

And what's that trick? Share the knowledge!

So, what she showed me is this:

  • Navigate to your vanilla patch in the Patch folder (mine is C:\Games\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\Update\Patch). Open up the patch in notepad and take note of the version number (I believe we're currently on version 5). Close up notepad.
  • After you make your merged patch from the Mod Manager, go to your vanilla patch in the Patch folder and change the extension to .bak, so you'd have package.mft.bak. This prevents there being any confusion between the merged and vanilla patches. If you need to re-create a new merged patch in the Mod Manager, just make sure you remove the .bak extension and you're good to go - otherwise the Mod Manager will crash.
  • Now, navigate to your merged patch in your Merge folder (mine is C:\Games\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\Update\Merged). Open up the patch in notepad and see what the version number is. By default it should be the next number sequentially from the vanilla patch (since we're officially on version 5, it would be version 6...and so on). This is where your saves will break. If you create a save on version 6 and then delete your mods (going back to version 5) you will get an error when trying to load them. To prevent this, simply change the version number of the merged patch to the same version as the vanilla patch. Save and done! Easy peasy. Now you can delete your modded patch and run the vanilla patch without worry of your saves being broken (of course you'll need to take the .bak extension off the vanilla patch).
  • I believe some of the mods give directions to have a "dummy patch" or something like that if you want to uninstall mods and not have corrupted saves. There's no need for this if you just keep track of your patch versions and make sure your merged patch version matches that of the vanilla patch. When BW sends out another patch, the vanilla version will change to 6, so when you re-patch your mods in, you'll need to change the merged patch version to 6 to match.

I hope that all makes sense! I give full credit to fontofnothing.

Awww thank you! The biggest graphics enhancement you can get for DA:I (short of running the game at max) is to use SweetFX. That's what cuts the awful overly red tones, knocks out the haze, and sharpens things up. I also noticed that using extra SMAA and Antisotropic filtering (via RadeonPro and NVIDIA CP) made a pretty decent difference.

I sure can take some shots of Blackwall for you. I don't use him much in this playthrough (at all actually...my IQ broke up with him so they don't really talk). I do have a Qunari in a romance with him so I will grab you some shots from that playthrough. Do you have a particular favorite scene? She's gotten as far as his judgement.

*edit*

So I forgot I got this not-so-great shot of Cullen last night:

6ftFT2Bl.png

This is when he's being harassed by the nobles...I can only imagine what's going on in his head based on his expression.

Say, if you're taking BW's pics I'm also interested

Right, that makes sense. This is pretty arcane and roundabout, though. Even if it's kinda simple, it's not intuitive, something you'd just guess to do. That's probably why mod authors don't recommend this kind of procedure - I'll wager most have no idea this is even a thing!

I'll play around and see if it works, thanks!

Thank you for the rec. I started using mods in this game, for the first time, last night (I always modded my other games). So I had a few of the mods you mentioned and will go look at the others you mentioned. I really do appreciate what modders do to make our games better.

I want to add mods but are they easy to do? You know like for dummies? DAO was download and place in override or use da updater. Are these as easy? Need to change hair and jammies and formal attire. And is there a mod yet to make black hair black? ;)

There is a new DAI mod tool with screenshots on nexus for step by step instructions. I'm pretty meh with my mod skills but they've made it pretty easy. If you keep all your various mods in a new folder, it keeps it pretty organized. But WARNING, I had mods installed before I started my 3rd playthrough and the tutorial in the ToSA was totally busted. Like no bad guys to fight, no solas and varric, just nothing. I'd recommend to wait until you're at least at Haven before installing. I still don't know which mod broke my game but it started working when I deleted everything. Phew!

Taking a little break from DAI for the moment again. My goal to romance Blackwall, Sera and Cullen in a triage is daunting when I remember how much stuff I have to do to move the plot along! Third pt and I just want the juicy stuff!! ;)

It's easy... for a dummy like me :) Previous to this I had only used Nexus Mod Manager.

Follow this link and download the DAI Mod Manager: http://www.nexusmods...tion/mods/116/?

Be sure to watch the "how to" video provided. I had to watch it carefully several times before I could fully understand what I had to do. (That's how much of a modding dummy I am.) If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

It's a lot easier than it looks - throw all your mods into one directory, run the Mod Manager to generate a merged patch, you're done. The slight learning curve is in setting up the Manager itself, but just reading the instructions there and following them carefully should take you five-ten minutes tops to start modding. Other than that, you just gotta remember to generate a new merged patch whenever BioWare releases a new official patch. It takes seconds, though- just click the button, watch the patch renumber itself, and go back to playing.

To make black hair actually black, I'm using DAI Hair Recolor Utility. The trick with this one is remembering to open it before you click on start new character - it has to be loaded before the chargen. But if you forget, just go back to the main menu, open the tool, and start your new character again. The Solid Black tone in this tool looks really good (and, you know, actually black). (this thingy also comes with a lovely tone of pinkish strawberry blonde than I'm dying to put on a new character, just gotta figure out what to play  next - maybe another Sera romance? She'd just love an Inky with pink drapes that don't match the carpet :P)

Aaaaw, my faves!

Tips, if you wanna go B -> S -> C: start with Blackwall and break up with him in the first bedroom scene, move on to Sera and break up on her first breakdown, and leave Cullen for last, but not so late into the game that his romance feels like it doesn't have any weight. Decide in advance who do you want to spend the ball with so you'll know how to pace each romance, whether to do Abyss or Wicked first, and how early/late into the game each one should be started. Don't speedrun this playthrough. You'll do a lot of zoning in and out of Skyhold to advance various stages of each romance, you'll need to take Sera out with you on adventures a lot, and you'll find yourself wanting to pad out each romance so they don't all feel like awkward hello/goodbye speed dating.

I was able to squeeze the three romances in one experimental playthrough, and it felt like a pretty fulfilling story for all four parties in the end, but it was all down to timing. I had to reload and postpone a cutscene here and there several times because it was not the right time for the relationship to hit that point.

Good luck with these three! They'll wear you out and try your patience a bit, but it's worth the larger storyline for your IQ in the end. ^_^

I honestly like Cullen. Even after not really liking him in DA 2. I was happy that he wanted to take himself off lyrium. I doubt that I will make him continue to take lyrium in future playthroughs.

I would guess the scar is from a claw of some sort too.  It really is a jagged (and fairly deep) scar and would have been a nasty injury.

I do love that picture.

If standing on carpet makes you taller...then I really need to get some carpet. Though 10 inches might be a bit much.

Maybe it needs kissing better

Oooo wow thanks soooo much for these pointers, nine!!! I totally felt like I speed dated bull, cass and dorian in my 2nd playthrough. I broke up with Bull after the first night because I thought I'd be locked in (didnt get the cullen walkin in on them scene :()and wouldn't be able to romance Dorian and my character is a devout Andrastian so Cassy was all melty welty swoony with him. Now quizzy and Dorian are like an old married couple, they've been together for over half the game!

Spread em out...ooooo patience...because I'll just want to rush to Cullen!!

Thanks! Very pretty, but unfortunately, not what I'd want for my dwarves (I can't quite picture-and don't want to picture, lol-Zhenya in embroidered flowers or lace.) I just wish they'd give us the option to toggle on our armor in Skyhold instead.

Edit: Just spotted the increased inventory capacity, that one's very tempting though, lol.

It seems like jammies for the Human male is the hardest to find. So far I've only found one two that weren't part of a package that changed them all.
