I ship Barris with everyone. Michel, Lysette, Belinda. Cullen. Write the fic, and I'll read it.
So I guess this is a dead horse topic but do you prefer to choose the mages over the templars too? (...) so always a difficult decision for me.
I don't know if we wanna go into that again now as we're trying to conserve pages until 5k and this can carry on for several dozen pages, but there's a good topic going on right now in the forums about choosing Whispers or Champions, with very good arguments and counter arguments for either side. Both have their merits, in any case, and while I vastly prefer the Templars side msyelf, I wouldn't say either is better than the other, even in as much as Cullen content is involved. It really depends on what feels right for your character(s). If you have more than one Inquisitor, then, you can always explore every path under different characters, too.
eta: oh and I'm a rude dummy too: welcome and congrats on delurking! Stay around with us! ![]()

So I guess this is a dead horse topic (hope that is the correct phrase, sorry if it is wrong, I am german) but do you prefer to choose the mages over the templars too? I must admit the main reason for me to do this is because there are more Cullen scenes and I like some dialog better. If you go with the mages, Cullen is the one who will answer his own question about your escape by saying something like you will find a way somehow. But if you go with the templars, it is Dorian who says it. And the way Cullen says that it is a hopeless situation and they are going to die but at least they can decide how is different if you choose the templars and I like it better the other way. But on the other side I think choosing the templars would make more sense because they are experienced to fight demons.... so always a difficult decision for me.
Welcome out of hiding!
So far it's been 50/50 for me. Two playthroughs siding with mages, two playthroughs templars. I think the templar quest is more fun to play than the mage quest, but I like Samson as opponent more than Calpernia, and siding with the mages gives you a little bit more Cullen dialogue. For my cullenmance characters I'll probably stick with siding with the mages in the future.

To help me out with my "project," can you guys share some of your favorite Cullen lines from the game?
"What is it they say, no rest for the wicked?"
"I am not bait!"
"Really? Because I just won. And I feel fine."
And there's a line option in the lake scene when he responds to the IQ, something about he's read the reports, and she's very good at getting into mischief, but I can't find the exact line right now. (obviously I like cocky Cullen showing a sense of humor best
)
Hard to say since we've started to speed up a bit again. But I think Cerulione's is right, that we've got at least another week.
On the saving spots, I can certainly do that as I always have placeholders for those who can't make it. [[ETA: Plus, you get double the exposure, because you just do a regular post after the fact, and then I add it in to Page 5000.]]
Since we're approaching it, why don't we sound off on who plans on contributing so I have a sense of who to wait/hold for?
The names I had before, plus those off the top of my head:
ShantiaThaneTimebeanTishinaNinetozeroRyriena (probably)ZarroTeshayelSephironaMelissaGT (maybe)CuriousArtemisCaja(Adela...?)CerulioneR2
I'll keep an eye on the page count; if it gets close to 5K on Wed. or Thur. when there are long periods of time I can't read/post, I'll put my chapter on AO3 for you to link.
Double post...
But something else I wanted to add: Anyone read the letters the elven Warden left on the Storm Coast? I really want to write a fic about that
It's a really sweet and kinda naughty story lol
I loved reading those journal entries/letters. I'm glad the Warden convinced the fisherman to stay behind, though.

Since I do not wish to derail this thread, I will just quickly post my arguements I used before on this subject.
The templar path is the better one.
The Dorian/Cole dynamic is better on the templar path because you actually still have a chance to meet Dorian and talk to him in the Redcliffe chantry, giving you a chance to know and therefor trust him before he shows up outside the gates of Haven, meanwhile Cole have a wonderful introduction where he helps you overcome Envy in the nightmare, thereby giving you a huge reason to trust him. Contrast this with the mage path where Cole is just this weirdo showing up in front of your gates. I also prefer Dorian's dialog compared to Cole's at Haven, his snark with Cullen is quite fun.
The templar mission is the better crafted one on various levels. From a gameplay perspective it has a lot of variety, from a small RP moment with the flags to the breather level in the form of the nightmare, to the timed stage where depending on how fast or slow you are, Barris can die. This variety in gameplay also helps strenghten the mission's dramatic curve, making it feel really well paced that hits all the right emotional notes. The mage mission however, is just a dungeon crawler through Redcliffe castle.
The time travel is also a huge disfavor for the mage mission because it shatters any illusion of tension one might have. Almost everything that happens in the bad future is nothing more than cheap and consequence free-drama that won't matter once you get back to the present. One might try to argue that the nightmare section of the templar mission is just as guilty of this, but I would disagree because to start with, the nightmare sequence does not dominate the entire mission unlike the time travel which takes up the majority of the other mission. And also because beyond the "This is what happens if you fail" warning, the nightmare sequence also serves as a warning of what you and the inquisition could become if you abuse your power. A small thing that is talked about throughout the game is characters wondering what will become of the inquisition once Cory is stopped, Cassandra wonders if the inquisition will go the way of the Seekers in that "Power became its own master" and in the end only become interested in its own well-being. The nightmare sequence serves to show some of the horros the inquisition could inflict if you were nothing more than a self-serving tyrant.
The difference between Calpernia and Samson also favors the templar path. While both villains by themselves feel somewhat meh, Calpernia wins out because her character and mission helps flesh out Cory more and help show a more human side to him which Cory's character sorely needs. That said, Samson does however show a bit more of Cullen so if that is what you want then I guess Samson is better.
In this post I also quickly try to explain how I felt Champions Of The Just had a good dramatic curve.
Here I explain why I, with the whole "Southern Thedas" trilogy completed, feel that saving the templars in DA:I gives the most satisfying story arc to the templar/mage war. Should be noted that this of course perhaps only counts if you made similiar choices.
Also, last but not least in factors to chose the templars...

I haven't gotten any more or less banter than before no matter what patch I'm on. I never had much banter to begin with.
I promise all content will be posted in a playlist - I just need to start playing the game more. I got totally thrown off the rails with Supernatural and Dean's massive amounts of hotness. Castiel is friggen awesome too!
So far I've noticed that taking the Templar spec has given me the most unique dialogue, moreso than a mage. The decision to keep him on lyirum (for now) totally fits my playthrough. I love it. I love it so much I want to commission a piece of work for it. Ninetozero pretty much sums it up, even though I believe she said her IQ is kinda the opposite to mine personality-wise. Rhiannon is all about duty and sacrifice. Being a Templar was always on the horizon for her since she was the youngest Trevelyan. She was given a choice - Templar or Sister, and she didn't want to be stuck in a Chantry. Being a natural with a s/s also helped make the decision for her. She was supposed to take her vows after the Conclave, but you all know how that goes. Even after finding out about the addiction issues, she went into it with open eyes and still thought it was the best course of action. She's the IQ and it's her duty. Finding love was just unexpected. She and Cullen only have each other for comfort against the huge tide that is the Inquisition. They help to keep each other grounded and pointed in the right direction. She realized that she needs him (and he needs her) lest the weight of it all come crashing down on top of them.
Glad you like it!
I for one feel as though Cullen was meant to be with a mage, given his history. To me, it gives the romance depth and in some sense gives Cullen another step towards his redemption. I love the Cullen/Mage storyline so much, I play it over and over again-its addicting.
My character choose to keep him off lyrium. She feels as though Cullen has come this far there is no sense in back-trackin (amoung other reasons). No matter what may come she will support and stand-by him.
This is one of the reasons I love the DA games. There is no right or wrong path. Sure, people may disagree with your choices, but I think that is because they are so passionate about their choices.
It will be most interesting to see where these two different paths lead our happy couples in the future of DA.
On another topic: Maybe its my "old" eyes, but I see no difference with Cullen's fur.
(Oh and sorry for my p!ss poor typing- spell check is not working on this computer).

Nooo, I worded it awkwardly, but, don't feel like you can't start discussions! If we don't discuss anything, we don't have a thread.
Anyway, if people wanna discuss the topic they will, I think we're just a bit slow today because it's a weekend.

I just use the Image button on the toolbar to insert images into a post. What file format are you trying to post? That warning sounds more like the board can't read a certain format or another.

While this scene is good, I was a little disapointed. I assume the line: "And those I am afraid to lose" was towards your Inquisitor being in a romance with him. But apperantly this line happens no matter if you are or are not in a romance with him. <sighs>. Would have been more meaningful if it was.

Perhaps it's because I have no faith to speak of myself, but I find it somewhat admirable that people can have so much faith in something that sometimes the strenght of their faith alone can see them through the hardest times of their lives. But that's neither here nor there, I guess. I do really like the faith aspect of Cullen's personality, in any case, I think it's important to his character and I'm glad this part of him was preserved. For much of the game on my first playthrough I was largely disappointed in how much else of him was stripped off or face/heel-turned without context, that when he addressed his faith again at that point I was over the moon - finally some of that old Cullen I loved is still there! Still my favorite moment of his in the whole game, overall.
Anyway, even if you're not romancing Cullen, you can still offer love and comfort in the form of a solid friendship, no? He hasn't had many friends in his life, so even if he doesn't find love in the Inquisition, at least he's found something like a home - good friends in your IQ, Cassandra, Leliana and Josie, people he cares about and who care about him, who put their foot on his door and make him know that he does matter, whether he wants to hear it or not. Those banters with Leliana and Josie where the two give him gifts and worry about his condition always warm my heart.
...well, also, I ship Cullen with Cassandra like a fiend in world states where the Inquisitor is not romancing him, so I guess he does always find love in my games in the end, even if it's not with my Quizzie.

Love how you put them to words. ![]()
I agree that it's admirable that sometimes faith can hope passing the hardest times, it's a good thing really. What breaks my heart is from how he choose the words: "I found comfort in faith when life offers little". From my perception, it's as good as him saying that faith's the only thing keeping him on track since he has nothing else. There's not much comfort in his life & it's lots of loneliness since he's not the kind of guy who gets lots of friends & loved ones around him for a very long time. That's what really makes me sad
Personally I also love the Cullen/Cass friendships, as colleagues-turned-real-friends. I get the feeling they do understand each other very much. Cass understands the spaces he needs around him, believe in him until the very end and he respects her greatly & trust her judgement above all. That's something. Whether these are enough to develop the sparks of love, it's always interesting to see in fanfics.

If you go with the mages, Cullen is the one who will answer his own question about your escape by saying something like you will find a way somehow. But if you go with the templars, it is Dorian who says it.
Nick Thornborrow (BW concept artist) posted this storyboard for that one scene Bull's where Cullen etc walk in on them. Check out Cullen's precious faces here:

I love the running gag they had with Cullen falling over and rising up each time more awkward bird than the last. I would've laughed even harder at this scene if this had stayed in the game.
