Aw man. Pfft. Complicated. I thought you could get some perk that put them in a store in Skyhold or something. Ugh. I freaking hate crafting. So that's way too much effort to go searching since I don't even know what I want. Ah well.

Thanks guys. :(

If you like pink, you can get dragonling scales from the merchant in the Hinterlands.  I always get alot of that cause it is pretty, and available immediately!

I tend to believe you only see the tip of the iceberg on acknowledged abuses, particularly in a system set up to encourage them. And part of Cass's personal quest involves her discovering the Seekers' culpability in some of what's going on.

I think my point is actually that comparing Templars and mages is comparing apples and beets. The circumstances and reasons for what they go through is entirely different. But unless you buy Vivienne's questionably rosy picture of life in a circle which seems to have little resemblance to Kinloch, Kirkwall, and the little we know about Starkhaven, I know I would fight tooth and nail to escape a mage circle. Though I suppose her description had some resemblance to the one in, was it Rivain? Just before they were annulled for not staying confined to their tower...

Agree. I don't think they're parallel enough situations to compare which one has it better or "deserves" their suffering since they signed up for it or whatever.

To Elu's point, I think he's right in the sense that general feeling I got from things both Cass and Cullen said was that society tends to focus on the plight of the downtrodden mage (since people like to support an underdog), but much less so on the templars, for whom it wasn't all smooth sailing either. Cullen repeatedly makes the point that templars should have an easier way to get out, for example.

Yeah sorry hun.

And if I was not under the NDA I could give you some information, but alas I cannot.

All I can say is be patient and wait. ;)

So I guess this is apropos of this discussion. Those who haven't played a warrior in DAI yet, or haven't done the Way of the Templar spec quest, may not haven seen this horripilant codex entry describing in detail how a Templar is initiated on lyrium (or at least the account of one initiation, we don't know that they're always this skin-crawling terrifying):

Spoiler

Nightmares forever imagining cuties like Cullen, Alistair, Carver, Barris, Keran, Lysette and Belinda going through this stuff.

...and grateful my own Templar Inquisitor didn't have to go this, too.

OMG! I hadn't read that!!! Egad. How horrible.

Do you remember which one??

I'm considering going on a Halla hunt... and I'm DALISH! :crying:

But there lays the problem.

i have racked my brain over this and cannot come up with any soultion.

If a Templar like Cullen chooses to leave the order and its put back on it (by player choice) later you can say, "WE will find a better way."

But what is a better way?

Its not like taking up smoking and then have a million ways too quit.

With Lyrium usage it seems like there is either take it or do not take it.

I mean there is Cole, he could remove the memories of having ever taken it. However considering Cullen is not one for wanting to lose his memories, I don't see that as a viable option.

I really should start reading everything - I skimmed over that when I played a warrior.

Well, it's not canon, but in that fic What We Become Cullen is shown weaning off of lyrium instead of going cold turkey. There are very specific instructions of how much he should take each day they try to follow to reduce the withdrawals and to prevent madness/death. I think that makes a lot of sense.

There was no way I was going to go templar, so I didn't both reading it. :/

I think we just don't have enough information, but I doubt it's an intractable problem. Like Thane mentioned, you don't necessarily have to go cold turkey. That's what I also did in another fic. There also could be magical or medicinal remedies. I mean, look at the crazy stuff Avernus was doing. If they can talk about curing the Taint or reversing tranquility, it seems to me they could find avenues to curb lyrium addiction. I think we, the non-dev folk, just don't know enough to propose alternatives.

(plus, the Templar Order has been pretty secretive and dogmatic up until now. If there are other remedies, I can't really see the Order being forthcoming about them. Like Cass's secret Seeker book of secrets. )

I suppose that could be an option.

Speaking of Lyrium....

Going to stick this in spoilers just to be safe...

I've been reading almost all of them, particularly ones directly connected to a Class. Meeting The Trainer (while hilarious) rather put me off choosing Rift Mage, for instance.

Sounds like gameplay trumping lore, to me, TBH. I mean... the very first dead templar bodies you see at Haven during the prologue were wearing red lyrium necklaces.

Yeah. I think the only dead templar asset they created were the red lyrium ones for some reason.

I've chosen 4 class specialties now and haven't read a single specialization book thoroughly - of course I've talked to all of the trainers. It's a problem. I skim and don't read quite often, but I'm trying!

Where is it stated that Cullen quit cold turkey? I've always assumed that he did the slow, gradual reduction method, under Cassandra's direct supervision. Anything else seems needlessly risky and rather OOC for both of them (IMHO, of course).

Good question.  He says "I no longer take it", and "it's been months" so I assumed that meant he just stopped altogether. It's possible he did a slow reduction unless there's other dialogue/codex I'm missing.

Yeah, I don't have the dialogue in front of me, but this is how I interpreted these facts as well. He's not on it now, and he's been off it for months. So it doesn't sound very gradual to me. But who knows what the first month was like, I suppose.

Amusing, maybe, but I'd be side-eyeing someone still reacting that way in his 30s. My Surana would completely go for him in DAI (especially since he's no longer a Templar.)

I know, I'm glad he grew out of that, I was just speaking hypothetically. :) I don't think my Amell would because she has been through a lot. I had her romance Alistair and he made the Ultimate Sacrifice. :( Also, Cullen moved on with my Trevelyan, but my Amell would forgive him for what he said at the Circle Tower.

lol! Well, I admit I skim some other codex stuff sometimes, but usually the things that look important to the story or game, I read.

On the other hand... looking back through the shots I have saved... when he apologizes to the IQ about his lyrium outburst he says, "I should not have pushed myself so far that day." Pushed himself in what way?? I had figured it was just he worked too hard, didn't sleep enough and that combined with withdrawal was too much. But! What if it meant he was gradually coming off and he pushed himself that day by skipping it altogether...?

I don't think so. But it's possible. Maybe.

I hope you read "Sexuality in Thedas."

It still makes me laugh. Cause it was in a long, long post a while back. David made the joke about the above book title. And now its in the game. Too Delightful.

I think "pushed himself" as in: blowing up like he did.

Yeah he is going through with-drawls, but I think that was probably one of his worst days.

Instead of going all "crazy" he probably feels that he should have calmed down and recollected.

At least that is what I got from it all.
