I generally stay far, far away from romances with too much drama, including unhappy endings, but Solas... I couldn't resist. Faerunner and I are twins, basically - intelligent, thoughtful, introverted, polite, scholarly types are exactly what I'm drawn to most. Especially if they have a lovely voice to match. But unlike the Cullen (or Alistair) romance, which I will happily play over and over again until the day I die, giggling and getting screencaps and headcanoning them floating among fluffy clouds of TWU WUV for eternity - BioWare be hanged - the Solasmance is one I can't replay and enjoy. Not until it gets resolved one way or the other, and if the resolution is... not good... that'll really be the end.
I just don't like too much drama in my PC's personal lives. There's enough of it going on all around them as it is. I'm a strange bird, I know...
Same here. I don't like drama or bad boys. I like sweet, sincere, kind, polite guys (though especially intelligent scholarly types!
), and I love cute fluffy romances. (Part of why I love my beau in real life.)
It's heresy to say so in the Solas fan thread, but I was really put off when Solas revealed a much more calculating persona who relishes deadly court intrigue at the Orlesian Ball. Many of his fans love it, but I was horrified and disgusted, and seriously considered jumping ship for Cullen then and there. Solas' nice, polite, friendly persona was what I fell in love with, and I felt this amoral schemer was closer to who he really was. (Meanwhile, Cullen may be a devout Andrastian human, but he was genuinely kind with a fully functioning moral compass.) For a while I seriously considered going back to a previous save before the romance start or find a way to break up with Solas to pursue Cullen instead. But I thought, "The game's almost over, I've come this far, I might as well see this romance to the end."
I'm glad I did too. Even though it's possible Solas' nice guy persona isn't 100% who he is, the scheming persona at the party isn't 100% who he is either. He's a complex person with a balance of flaws and virtues just like everyone else. He's still a genuinely good guy who cares very deeply about people and wants to help improve the world. He's good to Cole (who is literally Compassion personified), lists Lavellan's kindness as one of the reasons he loves her, and it's clear he does loves her very deeply and feels very happy with her. And the final romance scene is sooo well-done. I'm so glad I stuck it out.
I still like Cullen, but I want to romance him as a Dalish Keeper's First, but it's really hard because many of the same traits that would attract her to him are also present with Solas (at least when you meet him), and Cullen has that "devout Andrastian human and former Templar" thing that would make it hard for her to warm up to him for a long time. I'm having trouble realistically keeping her uninterested in Solas so she could be free to fall for Cullen later. x_x
