If it's in RL I'll say it's physical colour... That affects people rather differently compared to chemical colours (dye). But this is on screen so Idk.

Just dropping in to say that this thread is my favorite to lurk in :D

Saw that dress on FB, everyone's going crazy about it!  I actually see it as white/gold gradually fading into whiteish blue/blackish gold

I've been working on a Cullen drawing, for some reason he inspired me into wanting to draw again. But I'm trying it in a stippling style and it's trying my patience! Don't have a scanner but might try to post a pic eventually :)

Welcome :D

I don't know about your art level but if ever you're interesting there's a Beginner Drawing Group, link in my signature. There's intermediate/upper level people too mixed with beginners (mostly beginners). Basically it's just a fun place for everyone to share what they're doing, commenting each other's drawings, asking for suggestions, helping each other & gathering drawing ressources (yes, seriously we even got the Loomis books PDF...). There are traditional artists & digital ones.

Most people are from this thread & Solas thread.

It's fun & friendly so if ever you want to make a detour please don't hesitate :)

Just a question: What color is this dress?

Weird.  This image looks blue and black to me, but I saw a screenshot someone took blocking that post on tumblr (hah :P) and in that screenshot it appeared gold and white.

No worries. I don't think anyone was insulted. It did lead to some interesting conversation on a range of views of "intelligence." :) But talking about Cullen and Alistair, together, in the same discussion, is always fun. :D

My cheeks are still burning after reading that fic with Cullen x F!Trevelyan x King!Alistair...so yes, Cullen and Alistair together in any discussion is fine by me...

Just a question: What color is this dress?

My eyesight is normal. I am not colorblind nor do I have any issues with my eyes...I hate it when stuff like this happens. Now I will end up thinking about it for a long time. I am serious...it looks white and gold to me.

Just joined the group :D

Welcome!

...**** my life. This dress has destoyied the world. People see blue and gold, black and blue, and white and gold. I see white and gold.

Chill dear. It just means that your cones aren't as strong as people who see the black and blue dress.

"

Your eyes have retinas, the things that let you interpret color. There’s rods, round things, and cones that stick out, which is what gives your eye a textured appearance in the colored part. The “cones” see color. The “rods” see shade, like black, white and grey. Cones only work when enough light passes through. So while I see the fabric as white, someone else may see it as blue because my cones aren’t responding to the dim lighting. My rods see it as a shade (white). There’s three cones, small, medium and large. They are blue sensitive, green sensitive, and red sensitive.
As for the black bit (which I see as gold), it’s called additive mixing. Blue, green and red are the main colors for additive mixing. This is where it gets really tricky. Subtractive mixing, such as with paint, means the more colors you add the murkier it gets until it’s black. ADDITIVE mixing, when you add the three colors eyes see best, red, green and blue, (not to be confused with primary colors red, blue and yellow) it makes pure white.

—Blue and Black: In conclusion, your retina’s cones are more high functioning, and this results in your eyes doing subtractive mixing.

—White and Gold: our eyes don’t work well in dim light so our retinas rods see white, and this makes them less light sensitive, causing additive mixing, (that of green and red), to make gold.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. It looks like a white and gold dress in dim lighting to me, but I know for a fact that my own paintings look different on different computer screens (my piece for the 5k looks like there's pee coloring the light behind Cullen's head yellow on a computer screen at my dad's workplace and I nearly spit my juice out when I scrolled past it it was that bad. I had no idea since I certainly didn't color it that way on my screen) so I'm certain everyone's just seeing the photo differently depending on the type of comp they have. Some comp screens have higher contrast than others, some display colors more saturated, etc. It doesn't help that the photo quality is pretty low rez. But it is definitely funny watching everyone's bewildered reactions, LOL. :P

I just printed out the picture and it was gold and white when I had it on my lit desk then I moved it under my desk and it became black and blue due to the lighting. Now I can only see black and blue.

I'm intrigued... But I don't believe in what my eyes make me see in term of colour & depth & distance. So I might be wrong Zarro.

It's funny to see how each of us perceiving different colour... WTH is this thing?

It's all about the light and what your eyes can filter. It is truly a black and blue dress, but some people are unable to perceive the difference.

Perception is such a cool and mysterious thing. What you consider to be one color could truly be something else entirely to someone else.

Interesting. Well, looks like I'm stuck with black and blue now. For my eyes are sure that it is no longer white and gold. I really love and hate the person who came up with this.

Elu, I'm not very far from being unable to see at all in low light... And I see black & blue on that pic.

So it must be Seph's explication then, my computer's on rather high brightness.

EDIT: I tried to see it with all lighting off & low brightness & it's still black & blue.

Do what I do then...

Say "to hell with dresses" all together and just wear boxers and tees. :P
