I try to just tell myself they must get paid some type of salary.
Cullen as a Templar must have received a type of stipend. The Chantry would have to pay them something. Would they have banks? A savings account?
I would imagine that they would have to save their money elsewhere most likely. I don't think that Thedas even has "banks" really yet. And if they do I'd imagine that it would be only open to the very rich in places like Val Royeaux. I'd bet that Minrathous has something like that.

In boot camp we had a "valuables sock" - a sock you stuffed your money, watch, etc. into and then kept locked in your rack. What a system, huh? Maybe the Templars use it too ![]()

Money (gold and gems) on deposit with goldsmiths makes the most sense. Also, some form of finance (for the nobility and large merchants) goes back pretty far, just not exactly what we think of as banking. Frankly, most nobles were rich in land, not cash, so frequently borrowed money rather than having cash on hand.

All the talk about money in Thedas reminds me that I went to a medieval fair once and I had to change my currency from Euro to (faked) gold coins. So, I changed 40 Euros and had my purse and both of my pocket trousers full with coins
. I could barely walk anymore. I can definitely see why the Inquisition needs a vault

I'm getting confused; are we talking about real life history or Thedas history?

lol, I was making suggestions based on real life history. There were systems in place before the knights templar in the real world (and in fact they created them to try to undermine the others). All that matters for DAI is that some method of storing and borrowing money has been around for a long time.

I just shushed my husband viciously reading First Knight in "Knight's Bloom".

oh. OH! Tee hee hee. Heh. That was my first sex scene I'd ever written. Delightful that it was a worth a shushing. LOL!! ![]()
Yeah, I agree with that (article on the) book's findings on women and fanfic. At least, it's true for me! :fans self:

I think the discussion turned to human history as an inspiration for what might be happening in Thedas ![]()

Isn't there a letter Hawke receives in DA2 that's like unsolicited spam from a Banker or moneylender? One of those random letters she gets at her desk at the mansion?
Yep. I always took that as a pun on real-life spam
Including the Nigerian Prince who wants to share his wealth with you...

Male Hawke also gets something about increasing his prowess in bed, I believe... or is this Shepard... I can't remember

It's probably spam, but would establish that such a notion as a banker or moneylender exists.

Oh, yes... I just never thought about it that way
But, it would make sense. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chantry offered such services as well - given its tight grip on lyrium trade. Chantry's rich, yo... ![]()

Interestingly enough, it appears google's image search will actually trace gifs as well as static images using any direct image link url! That's so cool. I didn't think it would work but the source post showed up as the first result. Technology is wonderful ;v;

I wonder what time period Thedas is roughly supposed to correspond to? It's entirely possible that BioWare doesn't have anything specific in mind beyond pre-Industrial Revolution, but it would be interesting to know if they've set themselves certain limits.

I don't think they're totally pre-industrial because the dwarves and qunari seem pretty handy with a hammer!

I'm sure they probably have a bible of initial do's and don't's. Like gunpowder OK. Guns not. Or something similar. Kind of like my swearing in Thedas guidelines. sh!t/f*ck/damn OK. Hell not. ![]()
And in slightly related news: ordered my DA World of Thedas Volume 2!! :happy dance:

That "flag at half-mast" letter does show up in DA2. Even for a f!Hawke. I'm looking at it now in one of my saves.

I'd guess they aren't setting themselves too many limits.
And R2, I was thinking I'd seen some things connecting dwarves to banking (which would completely fit), but I was too tired to go look them up. ![]()

Actually, industrial implies mass production by unskilled or semi-skilled labor as well as certain systems of finance, taxation, etc. The dwarves don't appear to have thought of mass production yet. Magic kind of throws a monkey wrench into real world comparisons anyway, lol.

I'm not sure either, but it sure it fascinating to think about. I also wonder just how much of a setback Thedas' has suffered in terms of technological advancement because of the ancient Tevinter magisters' shenanigans. I've always been really enthusiastic about supporting Dagna because as a dwarf I feel like she's in such a unique position to do magical research that not many others would be trusted with, and there's so much that must be possible in a world full of magic. I mean, I know enchantments exist, but does the average household have, like, an ice-enchanted crate to serve as a refrigerator? Will someone one day mass-produce self-recharging electric toothbrushes? Self-warming blankets?
If someone figures out how to prevent possession/spirit binding and magic becomes less feared, I wonder what Thedas would end up looking like.
