So this one has got me thinking today. How do y'all think these two would interact? Do you think they knew each other? Knew of each other? Would they talk about the HoF? Or avoid it? Talk about templars or avoid it? Thoughts?

Hmmm, making me think thoughtful thoughts early in the AM :D Alistair and Cullen seem like they would've been total polar opposites in their youth when they would've trained together. IMO Alistair would've only really done what was expected, and then crack jokes the whole time, while Cullen would've over achieved in all serious For Alistair, since it was a part of his life for so short a time, I don't think they'd have a whole lot to talk about. If HoF was a mage though, I'd hope they'd share stories on her mischievous ways... :)

Good question :) I think they would find a lot of things in common. They'd share similar values, I'd imagine. Cullen might roll his eyes at Ali's sense of humour, but I think they'd be fast friends :)

Can you guys work a little harder at not being offended? My post was not offensive in any way. The person In the picture looked like a child. I laughed about it. I did not say any of you looked like children. I did not laugh at you. We really need to get past attacking one another. If you're truly offended by something that you know clearly wasn't meant to be offensive, I would suggest a simple PM.

Hmmm I'm not offended if it sounds like that...? I'm short, that's a fact. I always act like a kid, that's a fact too. So well... Associating both won't offend me. It's just an observation...

That's alright, Arti :) No harm done :) Sometimes it is hard to tell the tone of a remark, and people may misinterpret our intentions. But we're all friends here :)

Oh, pretty much nothing offends me :) I'm just so easily drawn off topic that I started chattering about being short  I'm terrible for spotting a tangent and running off on it.

I typically head canon that Alistair and Cullen don't know each other short of the brief encounter during Broken Circle. And Cullen was so messed up at the time he probably doesn't even remember him (though Alistair does).

I don't really think about them chatting and sharing tea while talking about a mage HoF. Even though my canon HoF is a mage, she was only into Alistair. The whole concept of Cullen "waxing nostalgic" over his long lost love just sceeves me out. Honestly, every time folks talk about it or I come across a fic featuring post-DA:O Cullen x HoF I just NOPENOPENOPE myself right out of there. I take that whole early storyline for what he says it is - a youthful infatuation. Even if he's not romancing the IQ, I imagine he got over it and moved on. However, folks will head-canon what they choose to head-canon!  :)

If they were to meet during our current timeline, I think they would get along quite well. Alistair seems to have matured a lot and Cullen isn't a complete sourpuss. I can imagine them getting along swimmingly after a good sparring session to break the ice.

Hey, for those who were having problems with mods and patch 5, did any of you manage to get them to work together?

And that's what I like about the fandom and headcanons and it's also the beauty of fanfiction and art. You can write or draw whatever you like :). There are so many varieties and unlike modding, you don't get attacked for it. I don't read so many fanfics but HoF x Cullen is a concept that certainly works for me.

Yep, I was up and running just fine with all my mods last night on the new patch.

As a matter of fact, my load times seem way way less so I'm liking the new patch so far.

I think MelissaGT said hers were working OK. I only have one mod installed and other than the fact I can open the one PT that is influenced by it, I have no way to be certain yet that it's working, lol.

Heh, I wish I could agree. Talking about why you don't like a certain NPC/NPC ship is one thing, but people put a lot of themselves into their PCs and I wish we could all back off a bit and let each other ship our PCs with whomever they want without needing to bring up how much we hate it. Every time I hear "Cullen x mage Inquisitor is a terrible match" I hear "you're not good enough for your favorite character and realistically I think he wouldn't like you"; every time I hear "Amell or Surana x Cullen makes me vom" I hear "regardless of the fact that Cullen was the light in your HoF's tower and for his part still speaks wistfully of her ~5 and ~10 years later, the idea that he had anything more than a two-month crush on her is disgusting" (and/or "if she reciprocated it was probably Stockholm Syndrome"). Same goes for arguments I've heard against Dorian/Lavellan, Alistair/any non-human, Blackwall/literally anyone etc. etc. etc. (EDIT: And thinking about it, for the arguments I've heard against all non-canon, mods-required PC ships. Except het involving Sera or Dorian, but that's for separate reasons.) I get that the idea that we should all walk on eggshells all the time is absurd, and I've tried to avoid yelling at people when I feel like they're doing this for that reason, but it's not that hard to put in a little extra effort not to diminish other people's enjoyment of the thing we're here to enjoy together.

Oh, I understand your concerns. However, when two people are thrown back together, sometimes youthful infatuation can turn out to be something more (I know two people who were kindergarten sweethearts and rediscovered each other at 40, lol.) So there's certainly a lot of potential for people who still want to ship Amell or Surana with Cullen post-DAI. I'm planning a PT with one of my Surana's as Warden and an unromanced Cullen, and in that WS, I imagine her coming back from her search to discover he's no longer a Templar and the two of them discovering they really can care for each other now that there is no real ethical barrier between them. I don't imagine them carrying a torch for each other all those years, just positive feelings.

Agreed.  I don't "get" the popular Cullen/Dorian and Varric/Cassandra ships, but I haven't spoken against them.  If the idea brings people joy in their headcanons, it doesn't do anything to take away the joy of mine.

^ Just to clarify, I meant compared with romance mods such as the Cassandra mod, pictures and fanfictions are getting less s**t thrown at them. But I wholeheartedly agree with what you wrote, Owlfruit.

Oh my, suddenly the thread got so serious. Let's have a Cullen.

It really depends on how you headcanon. Cullen would probably have known my Amell decently well in the Tower, as the two would have been on amiable terms, with Amell having a slight unrequited crush. So, in that regard, Ali and Cullen might have some ground to speak of there. And I would argue that yes, they'd both know of each other. In Cullen's case, being the succeeding Knight Commander to Meredith would have definitely been a big round of news, especially after Kirkwall blew up. Alistair would have been known simply due to his involvement with the HoF, regardless of whether or not he became king.

I wasn't trying to sound like I was diminishing anybody else's head canons. I was simply sharing why I didn't like the specific pairing for my own reasons. I'm not going to try and stop someone else for shipping it since it's no skin off my nose and I certainly have never said someone is wrong for shipping something they like. Heck, my canon DA:I playthrough seems to be the most controversial - my canon is a Templar romancing a Cullen still on lyrium...so there you go...

Thanks for saying this, can't say it better. I do ships unusual & unpopular pairings in addition to popular ones. And I plan to draw/write about some shippings no one would like.

Personally, after trying my hand on both fanfic & fanart, I can say one thing: creating any of these takes a lot of time, energy, efforts. These are things that the authors & artists put a large chunk of their own free time & share it freely with everyone. Writing & creating took much more time than just reading & enjoying it. Don't like it? Don't read it/look at it. No one have to put kudos or like to a work they don't like. But I'd appreciate & respect people who try not to diminish any work due to "I don't like the shipping or this headcannon".

That was beautiful and brought a tear to my eye  :crying: It was a struggle to write my 5K fic. I am tired, bone dead tired, every day I come home from work. And on weekends it's a struggle to get everything done that needs to be done. But I set aside several precious hours one day and got it done. And what's our compensation? A few likes and comments, and hope that others have read our story and enjoyed it. That's it. (Though don't get me wrong, that feeds me. Knowing that just one person may have read something I wrote and smiled afterward... it's an awesome feeling.)

I wasn't talking about you in particular, which is why I didn't quote you--here, on tumblr, on livejournal, anywhere there's text, if someone brings up HoF/Cullen someone else always feels the need to point out that they don't like it.

My point was that saying that you don't like a ship rarely adds anything to a discussion when it's a player character. If it's two NPCs I can see how potentially it could bring up interesting less-discussed aspects of their character, and as long as no one brings "only an idiot would ship this" or "you're only shipping this because they're both hot" or whatever into it, it could be interesting and no one should feel attacked. But PCs are different: harder to avoid hurt feelings / stay academic about it, and harder to make any points that are objectively true because of the variability in worldstates ("Cullen says it was just a youthful infatuation!" "Yeah, but he's the one who brought up that she was lovely / he says it terribly wistfully / he elaborates further if you're not romancing him / he can't help asking Leliana about her!") and the PCs themselves.

EDITED to add: And in most cases I don't mean just politely saying "I don't ship it," because usually that happens when someone's assuming you do, and that is useful information. Like, there's one less person to mail a hard copy of my latest illustrated epic poem about Purple Hawke x Meredith. It's the stronger wording and the rationale that I think are pretty much never worthwhile to add.
(Edited again to clarify the edit, sigh. It's a good thing I don't write fanfic or it would never get posted.)

Too true. That feedback is really wonderful, and I like the idea that something I wrote may have made someone laugh, even a little. Though I now find myself in a bit of a delimma - my daughters found my fanfic.  :o  ;)  So...probably no romance, or at least nothing more than flirting.

I don't know about livejournal, but on tumblr I've noticed that no mater what someone brings up, someone else always feel the need to point out that they don't like it, usually in a disrespectful manner. Honestly, if it wasn't for people stealing my screenshots I don't think I would ever go there. The things people say to each other can be so vile and hurtful. It makes me so angry to see how nasty people can be towards other people simply for having a different idea/belief/whathaveyou.

Thank you! I'm not quite done with it - I still have to finish Before the Dawn and get past the Arbor Wilds. I've been dilly-dallying because of Supernatural, but I will get back on track!

Uh...the screenshots belong to the game...which in turn belongs to Bioware...unless they're edited screenshots for purpose of making art.

But they are still a videogame's screenshots...
