Oh, oh, I would say the closest example to what Cullen could be is Joker. Now, let's set aside our feelings of rage at never getting to romance everyone's favorite snarky pilot
But I can see Cullen occupying a role of similar import.

Cortez I feel (and definitely Traynor) were firmly NPCs in my book; Cortez at least you can find on the Citadel twice and briefly interact with him. But he otherwise is not remotely related to the plot ... could be anybody flying that thing, really. And he doesn't really influence Shepard's decisions or really have anything going on save for his own personal plotline.
So I think you are right in that Cullen and co. will be a "new" kind of NPC, the likes of which we've never before seen. We can't fathom at this point in time how they will blend with and influence the story.
I am hoping for this reeeeaally hard.

Like Snarky Hawke, bad jokes and the urge to tell them are my kryptonite.
Like Isabela said, everyone deserves a good smiting now and then. ![]()

I hear you, and he was fairly against NPC romances, but now that he and the other writers have made the decisions to include one (or two), surely he's written the romance so that it's as rewarding as any companion romance
You think Gaider wrote the romance too?

No, I am a convert to the NPC advisers too. Which is problematic seeing DG's comment about NPC romances being (from memory, so probably not really accurate) less integal to the plot (or more difficult to implement or something less anyway) than followers.
PS - I just twittered, it feels weird - I'm not sure it's for me. Whatever happened to letters?
I'm hopeful that, as DG is aware of the natural pitfalls to this kind of thing, they'll be able to write a non-companion romance very well. If they know what's bad about a non-companion romance (they tend to be away from the plot, for one, or unnecessary) then they know what to avoid when writing one. And I think, with this advisor business, they've taken care of the away from the plot part, and Cullen will most certainly be a required part of the Inquisition as our general.
Hee. General Cullen. I like that.

[SCREECHING] YES THAT'S WHAT I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT ABOUT THIS. I just didn't want to say it because I'm always bringing up Joker and I was starting to feel bad about it.
This is part of the reason why I'm not overly concerned about non-companion romances--I adore Joker. I already adore Cullen. I'm confident I'll still feel the same.

Does this mean we'll have a sidequest to hook Cullen up with Scribbles?

What diabolical things are you planning? LOL
Oh FINE. I'll give you some diabolical previews.

That's as much as I'm giving until 1000
Some things exist already in the DARK DARK far hidden corners of the internet, but I doubt you'll be able to find them

Cortez was an NPC, he had no direct interaction with the plot at all. You could easily have replaced him with our invisible Cerberus pilot in ME2 (seriously, who few that damned thing?) and there would have been no difference.
Traynor? Nah, she was definitely a secondary character like Joker and her importance to the plot was actually pretty big. Several times her catching things overlooked in the initial intelligence reports and checking things on a hunch proved a huge boon to the mission. Heck, in many ways, she was actually better at uncovering information than Liara!

Whoever would have written the character would have written the romance as well. That's assuming that David did indeed write him.

Hi everyone, I'm delurking for a minute to ask all of you a question. I just watched the trailer (I was gone this week) and saw that Cullen didn't have his weapon at the end of the trailer. Do any of you still have hope that he's a companion? I still feel like I have a tiny bit of hope, but I think that it may just be wishful thinking on my part. *Goes back to lurking*

I actually wouldn't mind shipping this, as long as Varric gets to write friend-fiction about it afterwards.

I mean the way that Joker is an integral part of the overarching storyline, and how deep and meaningful his relationship with Shepard is.
Flirting and kissing? I didn't know you could do that with Joker. Damn FemShep gets all the fun!
