I thought it was feathers only because real fur dynamics don't really work in that shaggy-piled way. Like whatever dead thing is on his shoulders has really long, thick fur. And bear fur isn't even that long?
That was exactly my thinking on it. Also there's some movement of it in some parts which seem like the movement is all wrong for anything not feathers.

I automatically assumed that it was supposed to be fur back when we first saw the concept art and then screenshots/clips of him in-game. Bad looking fur, but fur. I just thought that it made more sense for Cullen to be wearing that instead of feathers, so feathers never even occurred to me.

Agree. It looked more Game of Thrones to me than Anders. But it was hard to tell just *what* it was supposed to be. In all cases... I would have preferred to have seen his shoulders... *purrrr*

[mister_temp] doesn't actually refer to Jim, sadly. It shows up in most conversation files. My best guess is that it's there to give extra time for animations between lines of dialogue. Not positive, though. Poor Jim's just [cul_main_messenger_1].
What's funny is this makes it sounds like Jim is at least *supposed* to be specific to Cullen (maybe?). Which makes it weird that *so* many of the messengers look like Jim. It's like Patton Oswald's character on Agents of SHIELD.

I think what got me was the uppermost layer of 'fur' that sticks out partially straight, almost like it's stiff. It makes me think the fur can't be all that..clean.

Cullen did remind me of Phillip, although I I think the song suits Solas more .Now that I think about it, there really isn't that many Disney songs where the guy is serenading. Its very old school.

I 1st thought it was feathers, then I saw the trailer where Cullen wears a lion helmet then I knew it was fur cause it wouldn't make sense to be feathers....
unless ofc there was some kind of mutant chicken/lion beast roaming around....
