But basically what I'm seeing is that Cullen is just every Disney prince rolled into one.

This is something we've talked about briefly. I think about Varric's comment about Cullen having pics of all his soldiers in his back pocket or whatever, which makes me think that it's known that he cares about his men quite a lot. I doubt he's really informal and chummy with them, but I imagine him being the sort of commander who tries to know folks by name. That his men know he works that hard because he's working to keep them safe. Also, given the casual Friday's and his forebearance with Rylen's cheekiness, I imagine him also letting his subtle snarky side come out when dealing with his soldiers.
I really see his behavior as someone who does treat his men as expendable as opposed to perhaps Leliana.

Hmm, what makes you think that? I think Varric's comment about him having pics of his soldiers says exactly the opposite...
Heh heh, I like this Inquisitor's debate skills.

That together with the fact that he's not a noble but more like "one of them," I could see him being the kind of commander with the common touch (hmm... now who does THAT sound like??
).
I agree.
However, I think he will also expect a lot from his soldiers as he does of himself including the level of discipline he has

Yeah, I agree. I'm sure he likes to seem like he's a hardass. But they know the truth.

Oh geez. Ya that was definitely supposed to be DOESNT see his men as expendable. My bad, hadn't had coffee yet.
LOL! OK, gotcha. I'm moving to cup #2... so I feel ya! ![]()
edit: altho! You also got me thinking. I *do* think he's still a 'greater good' kind of a guy. So I think he'll still send his men into harm's way for their cause. But he'll feel lousy about it and feel every individual death keenly, as we see in some of the War Table banter.

True, I think you can see that when he talks to you in the chapel. I'm not sure if it's romance only but when he says that he hates to do it but he knows he's going to have to send you to fight Cory regardless of how he feels (something like that)

Plus it's kinda difficult to keep up the whole hardarse Commander schtick after they've seen you running back to the barracks completely starkers, allowing the recruits to see just how hard said arse actually is?
Cullen: Now recruits, about last night, I want no jokes about what you might have witnessed on the ramparts?
Rylen: Don't worry Commander, you'll be shown no cheek from us...
Cullen: Good!
Rylen: We'll leave that to you...

Cullen: Fine, just get it out of your system...
Recruit 1: Are we introducing No Pants Thursday, ser?
Recruit 2: You're a constant streak of inspiration, Commander!
Recruit 3: Do you ever not stand at attention?
Recruit 4: Is this what it means to be stripped of rank?
Varric: I never knew how accurate your nickname was, Curly?
Cullen: Varric, get out of the barracks!
Recruit 5: No need to give him the bum's rush, ser?
I wish we could have seen a scene or banter like that, the soldiers in the Inquisition are probably having a field day. ![]()
So many puns! Puns everywhere! Ugh so funny. Did anyone ever mention how Sera is so inconspicuously underneath a certain table at a certain side of said table? LolCullen: Fine, just get it out of your system...

Ah, this is the sort of chatter I need to wake up to on a lazy morning!

Sifr, I so miss you when you're being quiet on here, you remind me of a couple I know who met each other at a gaming convention...in a pun dungeon. Twenty odd years later, they still leave everyone else in awe (or pain, depending on how bad the puns are
)
Well, I somehow managed to kill the thread lol
So, I am starting to think Jim may be related to/friend with Cullen. He is the only one outside of the inner circle who would call Cullen Cullen (except for Rion from DAMP. He is a mage who hates templars so it is understandable). Unless this person is Jim clone #257 instead of the real Jim.
Which makes me wonder: what kind of commander do you think Cullen is? A friendly/strict/soft-hearted one? I find it hard to image him chatting with the recruits casually. He is so professional and duty bound and usually shown to be ordering them in a commanding tone from various scenes. Even in his free time, he would prefer to work more. I don't think he has time to befriend the soldiers. But yet he seems to be lenient towards the recruits as shown in the DAMP notices (planning casual fridays, giving beer to the outstanding agents, organising barbecue party etc.) He seems to be the least intimitating among the leaders.
People would call Leliana: sister Leliana, sister/lady Nightingale and Nightingale; Josephine: Lady/Ambassador Montilyet, Lady ambassador; Cass: Lady Cassandra, (lady) Seeker. Only Cullen is referred as Cullen (alongside with Commander (Cullen), General Cullen, Knight-captain/commander and Inquisition officer).
I think he's a good one - strict on discipline but very aware of morale and flexible when he needs to be. I think the face he shows the trainees is hardnosed most of the time because that's what they need (and trainees need to gripe about how tough their sergeants and officers are-as long as they're fair-it's a point of honor to be able to brag about that.) No one respects a pushover. On the other hand, he wouldn't fool most of them for a minute about whether he cares about what happens to them or not, and that's going to win their loyalty, especially since he obviously rewards good work (like IB breaking out the casks for his mercs.)

Weird as this may sound, I actually picture him with a sidekick... The one who's not afraid of showing a softer side of the commander, a lighthearted fellow who understand him well, who told & explain to people that actually Cullen cares a lot when someone complain about him being harsh... Someone he trusts & have a strong bond with. Someone who can cover for him from time to another when he's got other matter on hand (like, well, we've said there's good day & bad day no?)
You know, the kind of pairing often told in stories with one rather straight-laced serious guy & the more lighthearted/ a bit softer sidekick.

Hmmm but we don't get any interaction between him & Cullen in Skyhold... (say, there's apparently lots of snarks between Cullen & Rylen on the War Table letters? I never bothered to read any so...)
Too bad there's no one in Skyhold who is his sidekick! Talking about this I'll be very interested too if someone actually write about Cullen & Rylen...
Does anyone ever wonder how Jim & Rylen would look like without their helmet?
We can speak with Rylen at western approach if i'm not wrong. As he speak about Cullen, he's happy to serve him. I think Cullen is an helpfull man, when his soldiers need help for training, advice. He takes care a lot of the comfort and moral also. I don't think he's really strict (well, he can be when it's really needed to).
Helpful & strict ain't always go opposite IMO. He can be "close" & care a lot about his men, but being strict on the same thing. In what I understand from Cullen is that he's very very strict to himself & his men & expect everyone to have a high standard. I personally believe the more he care about his men, the stricter he'll be. Sometimes being strict to a high standard can save his men's life no? If you're sloppy with your training the chance you'll get killed increase. That does not stop him to actually care a lot & be close to his men.
Yea I remember talking a lot to Rylen because of Cullen... ![]()
It's too bad we don't have Rylen-Cullen direct convo, it'll be interesting. Rylen was a templar too...
EDIT: Happy St Patrick's Day!
