I've got a lore question for you guys. So we know what happened with Cullen when he was tortured by the desire demon more or less. But he wasn't possessed right. Is there any indication as to what happens to non mages when they're possessed? I tried looking it up but it only said that they look for multiple suicides with like despair demons to know if theres possession involved. It also basically said it isn't the person's fault so it can happen to anyone I guess. So is it like the stereotypical possession that we normally think of? Like influence or is it pure mind control. And do we know if there's any chance of a cure? I know with mages there's the litany or something. I'm asking for a potential story I may or may not write....
When non mages are possessed, they have the capacity to do supernatural things, with included heightened healing, unnatural strength, etc. But I would argue that such possessed creatures might not necessarily perform "magic" as we know it. At least, not to the extent that a possessed magic would exhibit. However, if a non mage were possessed by a creature of exceptional strength, I'd say that all bets are off.
As to despair demons, I'd argue that they weren't so much possessing people as they were feeding from the despair and pain that people were feeling.
Possession itself is a bit complicated. It can be either spiritual, corporal, or some mixture of both. But for sure, it's a total domination of the mind and spirit for the possessed individual. The only known cure is either blood magic, or use buckets of lyrium to have a mage enter the Fade and try to kick out the demon or entity. However, some creatures, like Faith and Justice, may be too far intertwined with their respective hosts to be kicked out, short of death.
