Hmm, I wonder if we could get Cullen on red lyrium...
I did wonder that myself. I'd probably do it at least once, for SCIENCE, but I'm not sure how it would work in relation to his duties. Were he a follower, I'd say it could be a way to open up new talents. As he's not, I'm not sure how or why we'd ever have to make that choice.

Even though I have a tendency to shy away from wanting to do this, I will say I am curious about Lyrium addiction in general. It seems like we know very little (probably because the Order doesn't want it to get out). I'm wondering if there are like secret Templar nursing homes sprinkled throughout Thedas for long-term users or if it doesn't work that way? Just how tragic is it? Does it addle the mind and body? Or is it simply that the Templar requires more and more to stave off withdrawal symptoms until it simply becomes too expensive to keep up with their requirements so they get 'retired'.
And yes, Red Lyrium. What do we really know about it so far? Is there much official stuff on it? (I'm rusty with my lore.)

When Cullen was imprisoned by Uldred, he went without Lyrium, so maybe he isnt addicted or can deal with addiction better than some????
At anyrate I do think he could serve the same purpose to the Inquisitor as a party member, plus he has Templar skills that no other party member would have making him invaluable. I really do not understand why he is an NCP except if he is a fan service afterthought.
No question in my mind he should be a companion!

I know what you mean. I'm not entirely sure I want to have Lyrium addiction become part of a main character's story, but I am fascinated by it. I would assume that Lyrium addiction requires more and more of the stuff over time (I believe Gaider said they'd tried to make something like that work within DAO's game system, but it was scrapped) and eventually either the lyrium dosage becomes too dangerous to increase, or it doesn't matter how much they get because their mind is already gone.
Okay, because I thought I remembered DAO actually saying something about retirement, I scoured Youtube for a video. Those two templars from Denerim, in front of the Denerim Chantry, actually talk about this. Templars generally retire to Val Royeaux, but can choose to live out the remainder of their days in service. This is the video I found; it starts just before the conversation occurs. So there is some kind of retirement, but what that actually entails, I don't know.
All we know about Red Lyrium is that it mess you up something fierce. ![]()

Not much. All that we know is that is an obviously more potent form of the normal blue kind. It also has the capacity to circumvent dwarven magical resistance within seconds, a testament to its power.

I can see how Cullen could be an advisor regarding ways to fight Abominations and rogue mages. i can see how he could provide advise on Chantry doctrine and on likely strategies and approaches used by the renegade Red Templars. He would also have experience in training recruits
When Cullen was imprisoned by Uldred, he went without Lyrium, so maybe he isnt addicted or can deal with addiction better than some????

According to the wiki, templars start to suffer from lyrium withdrawal after one to two months. (This was apparently taken from the Asunder novel.) I think Cullen mentions that he was in the shielded area for weeks, and maybe months. So while he might have started to suffer from withdrawal, he wasn't entering a dangerous situation at that period. Also, he has to take lyrium because otherwise I doubt Meredith would have let him become Knight-Captain in Kirkwall, as he would have been ineffective against a mage threat.
I have no doubts that Cullen could have served as a companion, but I think calling his inclusion as an advisor fan-service a little much. He's hardly an afterthought, if these advisors are as important as it's being made out to be. Cassandra probably has the same Templar skills (as much as we Cullen fans liked to say she didn't, I think a lot of us were kidding ourselves
) and any demonic information we need we can get from either Solas, or even from (maybe) Cole. He would have been redundant in the field, but fits well as an advisor.

I'm still hoping for a DA6: Black Flag to follow that!
Think of how cool it'd be to recruit your companions into your "crew" and go explore new lands (I'd hope by da6 we'd of seen most of thedas)

No, I am a convert to the NPC advisers too. Which is problematic seeing DG's comment about NPC romances being (from memory, so probably not really accurate) less integal to the plot (or more difficult to implement or something less anyway) than followers.
PS - I just twittered, it feels weird - I'm not sure it's for me. Whatever happened to letters?
Wait, what?
Please don't make me cry, lol. DG always manages to crush my hopes and dreams. ![]()

Not at all; there's absolutely no evidence as of yet to suggest that Cass was ever a templar.

I think kraken exist in the DAverse. In the illustrated montage that plays when Varric spoke of Hawke's ride across the sea, there was a huge tentacle that pulled a ship down... Not the best evidence ever, but it is something. ![]()
Leviathans are also a huge plus for me.

True. But I wouldn't be surprised if she did have some Templar abilities at this point in her life.

True, she could have easily picked up some skills in the past 18 years.

Based on what I read in TME....we might have something like that floating around in the mythos.
Heck, I'd bet the highest class of demons are very Cthulu-esque.

lmao this is great. It also reminds me I need to get this game...
I'm an AC fan but I got kinda burned out after AC3. I wouldn't mind seeing a Dragon Age focused on moving around the seas. Might even make sense for a game that has a bigger scale than DAI where you can visit multiple countries.

*sigh* I wait for ages for a Cullen romance and they give it to me as an NPC.
It seems so . . . . . shallow if it's with someone you can't take with you on your adventures, advisor or not. I just hope Bioware has further developed the system, because Cullen doesn't deserve a throwaway hookup.

I'm quite hopeful about the system. The fact that Gaider expressed reservations about it in the past suggests he knows the problems a non-companion romance can have. If they chose to implement one anyway, I'd hope that they'd know what to avoid doing.
