A person's tumblr experience is Dependant upon who they follow. You don't have to go through the tags or even search. And you'll find hateful anons on any platform. You could always disable anon or disables asks altogether. Deviantart is dying IMO. A lot of artists have moved strictly to tumblr. Of the people I've followed and knew of - there's a lot less now than there was say 5-10 years ago. It is harder to find artists on tumblr though

Yeah I know about Tumblr. I never got any anon hate except once when I reblogged something rather political (something about Charlie Hebdo attack last January) and everyone who reblogged that stuff got an anon hate message, I saw the exact same message on everyone's. So that was not a personalized anon either. But in the fandom there's lots of anon attack on people I follow, personalized one.

 

And true, lots of artists are on Tumblr now, that's the main reason I go there too beside Cullen.

 

I sure can! It's a program called SRWE, Simple Runtime Window Editor. When running the game in windowed mode, I can use SRWE to change the window size to anything I want. That is also how I get super-high-rez screenshots. I play in 1080p and then use SRWE to "hotsample" to the higher resolutions on the fly. That way I don't have to play at like 10fps in order to get 4k images. The sky is the limit on how large you can go, rather your GPU is the limit. I can get up to about 5k and then my GPU pretty much NOPE's right out of the game.

Not exactly. The window size will appear larger than your screen can display once you blow it up to 4K size, so you will need to arrange the shot first. It also will slow your FPS down to a crawl since your GPU is now pushing 4K resolution. The tool simply allows you to play and frame shots at 1080p and then you can "hotsample" up to 4K (or whatever size you want) to take the screenshot. Then you would flip it back to 1080p. Or you can set the window to display as portrait (or square or whatever), frame the shot then blow it up to super-high rez, get the screenshot, and shrink it back down. 

 

What you described is called "downsampling," like using NVIDIA DSR to render higher resolutions (1.5K, 2K, 4K) on a 1080p monitor. It's supposed to alleviate the need for AA (antialiasing). However, "downsampling" will eat up your FPS just as much as if you actually had the higher resolution display. I used to "downsample" to 1.5K (1440p), but I didn't see much visual difference and I didn't want to sacrifice FPS. Besides, it also seemed to make lip syncing appear off (at least for me) and NPC's eyes would get stuck shut during cutscenes (totally creepy and weird).

DevArt is dying? I have seen quite a few people move to tumblr, but there is still a lot of beautiful art posted on a daily basis. It's my only gallery, atm. Do you think it's worthwhile having a tumblr account? Just to get more exposure?

I don’t think it’s so much that’s its dying more that it’s becoming a place for hobbyists rather than professionals because of certain clauses in their TOS. I seem to remember there being a change a few years back that basically said DevArt own the copyright to everything posted on their site, something that the pros who earn money off of their art work took great issue with.

I've gone ahead and made a Tumblr account, and now I'm trying to decide how to handle my shots on Imgur and the issue of more obvious watermarks. This may involve reuploading images, resulting in broken links.

Not your fault - how were you to know! That falls back to the person on Tumblr clearly not doing the right thing when it comes to posting other people's work.

I've gone ahead and made a Tumblr account, and now I'm trying to decide how to handle my shots on Imgur and the issue of more obvious watermarks. This may involve reuploading images, resulting in broken links.

 

 

I pretty much stopped using Imgur, especially since they went free and decided to lower the file size limit. Now all png's over 5mb get downsized and converted to jpg, and Imgur's jpg conversion is horrific. 

 

I use Flickr now to host my full-size stuff. Flickr's jpg conversion is much better. I haven't noticed any degradation in image quality. And if you so choose, you can allow folks to download your full-size originals.

Does anyone know if there's a way to save Scout Grandin if you find out about the "cure" for abominations the Avvar have before you encounter him? Or do you have to fight him regardless, since it's a demon possessing him (or like with Anders and Justice, the Spirit was corrupted by the host's anger) and the Avvars mentioned that sometimes they are forced to kill their mages when the spirit won't leave?

 

I'm actually surprised we didn't encounter any abominations in the main game? I suppose with the Fade torn and demons being able to enter Thedas at will, they wouldn't need hosts anymore, but I don't think I can recall encounter any except for that one at Chateau D'onterre?

I never had Imgur Pro, so the file size limit was always lower (~4mb) for me. Most of my PNGs are under 5mb, and anything larger than that (usually my 3840x2400 shots), I save as a JPG in Photoshop so that it's under 5mb. I haven't noticed those JPGs looking any worse once uploaded. Flickr sounds awesome, but I don't really feel the need to switch over.

Ah I haven't posted anything on devart for years lol. I only check my watchlist for artists that still aren't on tumblr. And yes I forgot about the political/SJ side of tumblr. I was thinking of anon hate in the context of just the art. But why people still feel the need to hate regardless is beyond me.

Well, dying probably wasn't the 'best' word. But there's probably more artists joining tumblr as opposed to new artists joining devart. Tbh I'm not quite sure why exactly tumblr is so attractive to artists? It's definitely faster and more convenient. But the problem is tumblr isn't just art. If you go through by what's tagged there's going to be other posts mixed in- text posts and fics etc. I actually just learned that using the search feature is different than doing /tagged. Searching goes by any word used in the post whereas tagging is strictly what the op tags it as. I absolutely love tumblr but it really is about who you follow. I follow about 310 people. And I'm sure more than half are artists. The only problem is that it's inevitable you're going to end up missing a lot unless you check specific artists manually (for new art.) But I absolutely think it's worth it. I think there's more of a sense of community even if there's a darker side in there somewhere. And it's also less formal, I think everyone's more approachable; there's more of a dialogue.

I guess it depends on the individual. Tumblr means something different to each. For me it's a database of inspiration overload because I have so many diverse interests, and I can find them all in one place lol.

Yup, agreed. Devart is definitely more formal. And you'll see more professionals from the industry on there, a lot of concept artists and illustrators. As opposed to the [generally] undercharging hobbyists who offer commissions on tumblr.

Chiming in late, but I do think this is your best bet with tumblr. With art, it certainly is, because if the artist isn't on tumblr someone else will definitely post it. Hopefully with a citation, but sometimes not or sometimes hidden in the source field that doesn't show up on the dashboard. With screenshots, I'd say it's doubly so, particularly since most don't think there's anyone to cite anyway. 

 

And, you don't need to participate if you don't want to. I definitely don't recommend going into the tags or searching, but you can pick and choose who you see on your dashboard (and even follow no one at all). But, it will help give your shots an official home.
