I hate the lion thing too it's ok. I couldn't even tell you why tbh. But for some reason the association really bothers me, and I don't even have anything against lions.

Oooh I can, I can! I actually really dislike lions, and I can tell you exactly why. :P "Lion" makes me think of:

- a lazy male who is alpha for no reason because he does nothing for the pack anyway

- sleeps around all day waiting for the females to bring him food

- rolls around, has some sex, makes some kids, rolls over, sleeps some more

- leaves the females to raise the cubs and teach them to hunt and survive

- gets pissy and whines when the females have a bad hunt and don't bring enough food

- eats more than the females who did all the work anyway, rolls over, sleeps some more

- only bothers when another male wants his job of doing nothing but being coddled and pampered

- for some reason is considered "king" of the wilds and a "noble" beast and a "brave" heart

- for doing essentially nothing but sleeping and whining and being a lazy douchebag

So associating Cullen with a lion makes me think of Cullen as this lazy bum who just lets Josephine and Leliana and Cassandra and the Inquisitor do all the hard work while he scratches his balls all day and then whines when something goes wrong, but also can't be arsed to do anything himself because he'd rather take a nap. Which is just... you know. Nothing at all like the Cullen we know. It doesn't inspire in me this notion of Cullen being honorable or having a brave and noble heart... it just makes me think of him as a douche in a furry boa. Which is why I hate this "Lion of Skyhold" meme so much - lions are jerks. It works for Celene, it works for Orlais, bunch of rich jerks who do nothing but be pampered by servants. But not for Cullen.

If he has to be analogous to an animal, there are so many better animals to be... even a tame house cat or dog has more in common with him. Ever seen anything more loving and affectionate but also fiercely protective to the point of putting themselves in danger to protect you than a house pet? That makes me think of Cullen. Lions... nah.

(Lionesses are the bomb, though. Those ladies are the real queens.)

Lions are pretty.

Cullen is pretty.

Perfect!  :P

I kid, it is a little off as a metaphor. I think they just picked it for the appearance.

Geeky-jez recently edited the original post to give me credit, though the edited version probably isn't out there very much. :(

At last! At least that's something. Curious that it wasn't until you had a tumblr.

Ya male lions are freakin' useless and lionesses are awesome but I wouldn't want to compare Cullen to something female specific. Maker knows that could open up a whole other can of worms. The only connection I see is the aesthetic, which I could kind of understand but even then it's just- mane, and that's it. A tiger has more in common with Cullen, solitary for instance. Too bad they're not mentioned in DA lore (at least I don't think so.) But it's another reason I like the red lion angle (yes I know, beating a dead horse here.) I'm going to come up with a better name than that too.

Spoiler

Now I don't know how much effort was put into the tabletop game but regardless, it obviously looks more like a tiger than anything else. But I'm going to try and work on something, to try and convince you all. Like maybe a fantasy-like liger - the real things are not so majestic... But something distinguishable enough from a lion at least. I think first I'll rummage through the wikia for DA fauna that could be relevant instead. I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on Cullen's 'spirit animal' or whatever you want to call it though. Other than a lion. Or mabari. I like them as much as the next, and while I could see Cullen having one as a pet- I just don't think Cullen when I look at one..

I sent an ask shortly after making my Tumblr account asking for credit, so they added it in. Not sure why there wasn't at least a link to my forum account before then, like the original original post had. They also made a separate post to inform their followers about it, and asked for a signal boost, but that didn't really happen. Sadly, the most popular series of reblogs to, well, reblog obviously don't include the credit. :( Some people have reblogged my post or the updated post, though, so there's that, I guess.

LOL I just prefer to think of it as fur, because he's Fereldan. No more, no less. I've got nothing against the lion per se, only against the illogical jumps I see in assigning it as some kind of meaningful symbol about Cullen when all the evidence outside the existence of the silly helmet points against it.

And red lions... well, at least they're sort of Fereldan. And don't actually have manes, it seems. :P

That is curious, since more than one of us pointed out the citations far earlier. I guess there's our experiment, eh? You don't exist unless you have a tumblr name. ;)

Ya the helmet incident is unfortunate. As for the mane thing- I can fix that ;) I probably wouldn't make it as 'poof' and blown out as a typical lion's but... I can make something work. Muahaha I have a mission now. Must convert all the nonbelievers. ^^

I'm not good with the spirit animal stuff so for now I'll just say Cullen is a fatty moogie house cat who likes to chill on his quiet personal corner but also loves to cuddle and get all up in your face and bite your fingers, and purrs really shamelessly when you give him a good ear and belly rub, and also will claw the eyes out of anyone who threatens you because you are his precious and no one hurts the precious. Purr, purr.

Also he sheds all over the carpet. Imagine that nice carpet in your Inquisitor quarters full of fur that keeps falling from that fluffy collar of his every day. (and by "falling" I mean, getting pulled loose by the IQ when they're making out :P )

Lol I can see Varric teasing him with those lines.

Can anyone see a fox? The fennecs made me think of it. It's one of the more stereotypical symbols but.... I looked and I'm running out of ideas. It seems Thedas is filled more with creepy hulking things that can kill you, and demons, than anything else.

Aw, yay! :D I only follow FYC right now, since that was the only Tumblr blog I had bookmarked before making an account (I should really start following those of you here). Occasionally, I'll get curious and check the reblogs for that post and usually only end up seeing the same series of reblogs that was linked above, so that gets a little discouraging. Nice to hear that the updated version is being passed around, though!

Hmm, spirit animal - if not a mabari, then perhaps a bald eagle or a stag. I'd lean more towards the eagle simply because of Cullen's apparent fondness for birds.

I do like the stag and rams with him. I only feel funny because the Dalish and Elves have a strong association with the Halla and whatnot right? I forgot about the birds of prey though... I liked that idea. And we were just talking about Cullen and falconry a week or so ago too.... hmm..hmmm.

I like mabari, but maybe an eagle. He doesn't have the aloofness I associate with raptors, though.

OMG, I love this so much. We've joked for yeeaaars that Cullen was the templar poster boy. How awesome if Barriss replaced him? LOL

Already has, yeah? If Cullen wants nothing to do with the Order anymore, Barris has to shoulder the responsibility now.

Barris will do good by the Order, I have faith in him. That boy is golden. <3

Yikes, I don't get to respond for a bit and we've jumped a few pages and are on to new discussions. I guess I'll leave the old convo behind, heh...

OMG, lol! This is great. The Ser Barris poster with "Inquisition Approved" just made my day (I really needed the laugh).

Cullen fanfic question, what is the name of the Cullen-group on archiveofourown.org? I just joined that website and am moving all my fanfics over, but I wouldn't mind writing a Cullen fic (or two). So, I was wondering if there was a group.

My profile: http://archiveofouro...iGeisha/profile

(sorry I've only ever written Inuyasha-related fics! but folks are welcome to read, if you're into that series...and uh, smut, because that's all that I seem capable of writing <_< .)

I don't see the appeal in Barris - to me he is bout as interesting as cardboard and no he is not good looking at all.

But to each their own.

There's the cullenthread collection where we post fics for our milestone pages... I don't know if it's okay to tag other non-milestone Cullen fics generally written by people in the thread, though. Thoughts, R2?

I haven't found another Cullen-centric collection, but then collections are so hard to search for if they're not well tagged...

I'd like to maintain that for celebration fics from the thread, since otherwise it just becomes a general cullen tag. I don't think AO3 really works with groups like that, TBH. I think you just tag Cullen and folks who want to read Cullen find you, kinda like ff.n, except you can tag everything about your story in addition to characters and couples.

That being said... I'm not particularly fond of the tagging system there, so there may be other, more clever ways to do things.

Yeah, I'm currently trying to muddle my way through how the tagging works on AO3. I thought collections were "per author", but it seems like I'm wrong there. Thanks for the help. I don't want to fill the milestone page with things that shouldn't be there. If anything I'll just wait for the next milestone to post something (we know it's coming!  :D )

There are two kinds. You can establish a Collection for multiple authors, moderated or unmoderated, like the Cullen thread one for certain types of fics, like there's one for the DA Big Bangs. Then there are Series, which are "per author" and you can group together your related stories, like my Chocolate & Sex stories. I love the series option. The Collections, TBH, I haven't really seen used all that much except for things like fandom challenges and events like the DABB.
