I hate the lion thing too it's ok. I couldn't even tell you why tbh. But for some reason the association really bothers me, and I don't even have anything against lions.
Oooh I can, I can! I actually really dislike lions, and I can tell you exactly why.
"Lion" makes me think of:
- a lazy male who is alpha for no reason because he does nothing for the pack anyway
- sleeps around all day waiting for the females to bring him food
- rolls around, has some sex, makes some kids, rolls over, sleeps some more
- leaves the females to raise the cubs and teach them to hunt and survive
- gets pissy and whines when the females have a bad hunt and don't bring enough food
- eats more than the females who did all the work anyway, rolls over, sleeps some more
- only bothers when another male wants his job of doing nothing but being coddled and pampered
- for some reason is considered "king" of the wilds and a "noble" beast and a "brave" heart
- for doing essentially nothing but sleeping and whining and being a lazy douchebag
So associating Cullen with a lion makes me think of Cullen as this lazy bum who just lets Josephine and Leliana and Cassandra and the Inquisitor do all the hard work while he scratches his balls all day and then whines when something goes wrong, but also can't be arsed to do anything himself because he'd rather take a nap. Which is just... you know. Nothing at all like the Cullen we know. It doesn't inspire in me this notion of Cullen being honorable or having a brave and noble heart... it just makes me think of him as a douche in a furry boa. Which is why I hate this "Lion of Skyhold" meme so much - lions are jerks. It works for Celene, it works for Orlais, bunch of rich jerks who do nothing but be pampered by servants. But not for Cullen.
If he has to be analogous to an animal, there are so many better animals to be... even a tame house cat or dog has more in common with him. Ever seen anything more loving and affectionate but also fiercely protective to the point of putting themselves in danger to protect you than a house pet? That makes me think of Cullen. Lions... nah.
(Lionesses are the bomb, though. Those ladies are the real queens.)
