I was absolutely indignant for a hot minute but then I remembered that my headcanon is not actually canon and felt a bit silly about it. Just a little bit.

 

I headcanon it now as Cullen on one hand not wanting to advertise too loudly the fact that he was once in a relationship with the Champion of Kirkwall, as brief as it lasted, since there is already so much rampant gossip about his private affairs running the battlements as it is; on the other hand wanting to preserve Hawke's privacy too, as it's unbecoming to go around spreading rumors about a woman's sexual history like it's anyone's business (specially bad since she's a public political figure now in my game, being the Viscount of Kirkwall and Princess-consort to Starkhaven), and if even Varric had the wit to leave their affair out of the tale ( ) Cullen ought to be discreet about it as well; and on the other hand (he's an octopus ok) meaning that no one got him to feel quite so strongly then as Quizzie does now.

 

Sure he and Hawke had something, and it meant something at the time, but in retrospect she was meant for someone else and he's now figuring out that maybe he was meant for someone else too, and what the Inquisitor makes him feel is something he hasn't felt before, not even for Surana, Amell or Hawke. So it's a poorly worded question from her, and a poorly worded answer from him, but they're fumbling at the time, and when he tells Quizzie "I have never felt anything like this" later, that is what he means. Not that he hasn't ever loved anyone before, even in Kirkwall, but that he's never loved anyone like this.

Well it's not my fault so much of the romance is missing and I must fill it with wild fancies everywhere!

 

Plus you can't blame me for having developed a habit of filling in the blanks, I'm coming in from a Sebastian romance - 900% of it was headcanon-only. Hard to get out of that "must fill in every detail" head space once you get used to it.

Sorry, but have to trot this one out again in this context, because I love how it turned out. I can't help but imagine that DA:I Hawke's relationship with Cullen was so on the DL that perhaps even her friends in Kirkwall didn't really know the details. That it was sort of the slow burn, summer vacation kind of thing that you look back on wistfully, wondering what could have been and where that person might be now. Sooooo of course, that means Summer Nights parody from Grease.  (note this was from before the game came out, so we didn't know anything about Hawke's whereabouts yet)
