So, has anyone else made themselves cry while trying to write something? (Note that this isn't about a current story... :P )

A lot yeah. Especially when writing that Memories 5K celebration fic. A lot a lot a lot. But guess that if a story you write won't even move you, probably that won't move other people... I mean that's kinda what's expected right?

So for anyone following, new chapter!

Fool’s Errand 13: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back by R2s Muse
Summary: Three years after allowing Marian Hawke to escape Kirkwall, a disgraced Cullen is sent on a desperate quest to find her. Can he earn her trust in time to regain what he’s lost and finally redeem them all for the role they played in igniting the mage-templar war? Set in 9:40, after the events of DA2 and Asunder, now slightly AU to DA:I.

Pairings: f!Hawke x Cullen

Chapter Summary: Hawke, Cullen and friends succeed in crashing Alistair’s ball, and it goes both better and worse than they expected as they encounter some familiar faces. And, dancing may be involved.

Chapter 13 on AO3

Excerpt:

Thanks R2s. This fics really come at a good time. Thanks.

(I'll be re-reading from the start tonight I guess, now that I have much more time to catch up with yours & Tish's works).

I'm not strictly sure this is Cullen, since it had no tags, but most reblogs seem to think it is. Either way... I hope it is, because, OMG. Feelsuh.

It's kinda NSFW, tho, so linked.

I love Cullen's response in some of the war table missions. They're hilarious, but also absolutely badass.

"I'm sorry, did we embarrass a duchess at a soiree by stepping on her gown, or was the sky torn open and Haven beset by an ancient darkspawn magister?

We needed the gold. We needed the men. You would have persuaded someone to part with them, with or without the treaties.

We are not making reparations for doing what we had to do. What no one else could have done. [If Wardens recruited:] Don't forget, we are now allied with the Wardens. If we had no authority to conscript before, we do now. [If Wardens exiled:] Don't forget, the Wardens were exiled from Southern Thedas, by the power of the Inquisition. We've seized their holdings. Anything owed them is now owed us."

But of course, we can't forget the best one:
"No. This is ridiculous".

Nope, not even worth arguing the subject.

The man just doesn't give a damn.

Here's a recent post on it going around that, honestly, I haven't spot checked, but is also based on the RPG map scale.

http://daydreamsonac...-i-travel-times

At the bottom it includes a link to distances from DA:O as well.

I copied it, but I don't have the original link (and can't get to docs at the moment anyway due to severe storms, limited to tablet right now.)

Speaking of storms, I think DA Fan was in the process of moving back to Austin, I hope he wasn't near the tornado (not supposed to have been too bad according to my daughter.)

“I hereby invoke the Right of Conscription to recruit this Templar into the rank of the Wardens…”

The situation was bad enough for young Templar Cullen. The newly harrowed Amell lay dead in his arms, the Blood Mage Jowan managed to escape, and Knight Commander Gregoir’s blade was pointed at his neck. Earlier, he had failed to dissuade Amell from her plan to help Jowan’s escape from the Circle altogether, resulting in her being killed while trying to stop the ensuing confrontation between the two men. While Cullen did not manage to convince either the Knight Commander or the First Enchanter of his innocence, he still blamed himself for Amell’s death. He humbly accepted his punishment to spend the rest of his life in the prison of Aeonar… until Warden Commander Duncan himself decided to recruit him to join the Grey Wardens.

Whatever Duncan sensed in him, whether it was his sense of duty, his perseverance, determination or unfaltering resolve, Duncan knew that this young man had what it took to do what must be done to save Ferelden from the Blight.

This is so very relevant to my interests...but, dayum, that makes it all seem a bit, uh, FAR?

I mean, haven to temple of sacred ashes taking half a day? it's 10 MiLES? but...you get up there in like, 20 minutes? i mean i know its representative and all that, but... geez. i would put it at 2 miles, tops.

and who the hell does bull think he is? "Hey there, you don't know me, but take a 12 day trip out to the storm coast to see me work! we're worth it! oh, and that's 12 days ONE WAY, boss. LOL"

and 8 DAYS from haven to the hinterlands? isn't the hinterlands like, out the backdoor? i got the impression it was a day's trip to the hinterlands and a day back - as in, you could jet out there and back in a full 24 hours.

and 27 days to the hissing wastes? well, poor wastes. i'd just let the venatori have them if that were the case.

okay.... i think for the sake of fiction i may need to, um, fudge those numbers. that's insane! or we need a FTL drive on the horses.

but! thanks for the linkys. i now need to do some math...

Yeah, this is one of the annoying things about DA:I is that the fast travel is ridiculously unrealistic. There's no way you'd take a quick day trip from Skyhold for a date in Honnleath. According to the Calling, it takes two days from Denerim to the Calenhad docks, but you can't even travel across Ferelden at some times during the winter. According to Dagna, 2 weeks 4 days from Orzammar to the Fereldan Circle Tower. Luckily, traveling by sea is far more convenient, so that's what I use a lot to get around in my stories.

The estimates I use are:

By ship: average 4 knots (1 knot=1 nautical mile per hour = 1.151mph) so about 90-100 miles a day, sailing ~24hrs straight (based on medieval caravels)

By horse: "A fit horse (endurance fit) can canter about 25 miles in 2 hours. (12.5 mph) with no ill effects. Longer distances require more stops and a slower pace (trotting and walking).

A heroic horse can do a 100 miles in 12 hours or so... but probably not carrying a lot of weight & not going to be good for much the next day. An average very fit horse can do 100 miles in under 24 hours, but will be spent and not good for much for a while after... " (From the I <3 Alistair group on BSN)

By foot: 20 miles a day, taking breaks & meal stops; 30 if you push it.

good to know on the travel times by ship, horse, etc.. that's good.

aaaand alright, that's it. i'm going to have to completely go off-canon for the distances in fanfic. 'cause that's NUTS! i mean, i'd stay canon if the game did, but really, those distances are way too far to...i mean...bah! that's crazy! it's like applying modern canadian distances to a medieval world.... which is prolly what they're doing. okay, i just can't even.

lol, excuse me while i'm mind-boggled over here. and while i go fudge the maps.
