Not from Canada I take it?   ;)

actually from the states, which is why this boggles my mind. i wasn't expecting distances as big as we get 'out west'. was thinking thedas was a bit more compact like.

so how the heck is the quizzy going to deal with being gone from cullen for so long with those distances being what they are? that's what i wanna know.  :P

I think in Thedas they'd be quite use to travel taking that long just like it would of hundreds of years ago for us, plus as Tishna said she'd take advantage of "quality time".

I remember as a child learning history of my home city and being shocked that it would of taken a day with a horse & cart to get somewhere you now could take a 20mins drive if no traffic.

aaand this is where i'm missing the normandy ssv and ftl drives and such. :P

i think the thing not quite accounted for on these travel times is the degree to which people would take advantage of travel by water. lake calenhad connects into the sea, so the trip to val royeaux would be about, what, 3 days? down out of haven, then depending on the wind, 2-4 days to VR. and i took it that the hinterlands was cheated a bit closer to the frostbacks than it's shown on the map. since redcliffe village on the quest map is in the upper rightish corner of the map, i took it that you're closer to the frostbacks - like, all those quests in and around the merc forest (hello bear-camp) are right up against the mountains there.

the one that really gets me is that i just don't see how it can take 3 hours by rowboat from the lake calenhad docks to kinloch hold when in dAO you can see the hold *right there* on the lake in front of you. unless a nug was rowing....

okay, never mind me. clearly BW made a map, then made zones, then re-made zones, and they don't quite fit. i shall head-canon longer distances, poor cullen waiting on the quizzie, but also shall headcanon haven a bit closer to the lake. for reasons.

Well, completely by accident, I think I accidentally created an IQ who almost looks good in the pajamas...

Pajamas_1.png

Pajamas_2.png

I think I got her eyes a little too big and the face a little too sharp even for me. This pale blonde hair looks much better out of the CC than it did in it for some reason. Of course, this is the only good shot you get of them in the pajamas before Skyhold, so hopefully the lighting works there too. I noticed most of the cutscenes show the IQ from the right side of the face, and put her rather noticeable scar on the left.

She's my future attempt at the Cullen-Solas poly "feature." ;) :P

I was just laughing because it would take me 24 days if I walked to Edmonton at 20 miles in a day and I live in the next province over.

There's a song about how big Canada is (we're really big!).   :D

good to know on the travel times by ship, horse, etc.. that's good.

aaaand alright, that's it. i'm going to have to completely go off-canon for the distances in fanfic. 'cause that's NUTS! i mean, i'd stay canon if the game did, but really, those distances are way too far to...i mean...bah! that's crazy! it's like applying modern canadian distances to a medieval world.... which is prolly what they're doing. okay, i just can't even.

lol, excuse me while i'm mind-boggled over here. and while i go fudge the maps.

There's a reason most of us use time (time to travel that is) as a measure of distance.

well, sort of tangential to the travel discussion, here's Chapter 14 of Haven, in which I finally get to the start of the game! (huzzah! the game! lol. omg. i do have plans for skipping sidy questies later to make up for all this backstory)

and regarding the time it takes to get from haven up to the temple of sacred ashes - i'm headcanoning that it's about 2.5-3 miles straight uphill. so...yeah. i'll just say that up front. i'm talkin' an hour or so to quickly climb to the temple, not half a day, like those charts say. cause, dude.

chapter 14, The Prisoner's Doing:

at my site (sagefic, with a picture of cullen looking awesome)

at AO3

and incidentally, it's REALLY challenging to write ingame events, especially the tutorial scenes. i mean, everyone's played them a million times. i ranted a bit about that here, in case you're interested in that. which...you may not be. lol.

anyhow, thank God thank the Maker it's posted. while it was fun to write quizzy/cullen finally meeting when she's actually awake and conscious, i am super happy to move on to the rest of their story.

you know, at first i was like WTH is with the cc hair options? i mean, okay, i got that they were going for simplicity for the devs with the androgyny and all, and okay, i can roll with it. i was more annoyed that so many of the styles were so mullet-like. but then the short cut i settled on kind of grew on me. now i just can't pick anything else for my main. i think she'd look entirely wrong with long hair.

still, i wish the game were a bit easier to mod. and i wish there were more pulled-back styles << never seems like there are enough of those. since really, if you were doing a ton of fighting, you'd want your hair out of your face.

yeah, i LONG for the day when i can pick 2 styles for my 'toon - one for combat (pulled back/messy if short), one for 'around the house (down/cleaned up if short)

but that'll probably never happen.

and to stay on topic - so, how about that Commander Cullen's hair, eh?

I'd actually like a hairstyle that was some sort of wrap or band that let just enough hair show for you to see the color, which ought to be pretty simple compared to actual hair (and practical for combat). And yes, I know we have helmets, but I always have helmets turned off so I can see faces (and a lot of helmets/hats with good stats are just plain ugly.) I want something that's always there, including the cut scenes while wearing the d****d pajamas. Since they don't seem willing to devote the time/resources to doing good hair, I'd rather just give most of my IQs headwraps in various colors (especially since we'd be able to redye them in the mirror) and headcannon that it's curly/long/wavy/whatever under the wrap.

Face sliders pretty pleaseeeeee....? XD
I really wish they have something of a face data bank like back in ME2 where people can show off their shepards and share their face code. It was awsome <3

I copied it, but I don't have the original link (and can't get to docs at the moment anyway due to severe storms, limited to tablet right now.)

Edited ninja ed by R2

Speaking of storms, I think BioFan was in the process of moving back to Austin, I hope he wasn't near the tornado (not supposed to have been too bad according to my daughter.)

On my way back to Houston (which is really bad being the "Bayou city" and all) on Tuesday. Inner city is ridiculously flooded. The bottom floor of The Galaria (the really big fancy shopping mall) is completely flooded. My family is all ok, and my folks live a bit up north so not so many bayous. Some parts of Houston got 10+ inches of rain on some days though.

Staying with my folks for a month until I can move into my apartment in Austin. Austin was pretty bad as well. From what I saw, parts of downtown were completely flooded. A lot of people in central Texas lost their homes because they were carried off their foundations. Nobody I know or in my family had any bad flood damage. And I haven't heard anything about tornadoes. Austin is in the Hill-country so tornadoes don't typically form out there. Houston has small ones from time to time though. I think I'll be ok, but the flooding has effected a lot of people. Luckily Houston is somewhat designed for these types of things because we get hurricanes every few years, but central Texas not so much.

@ tish - not a bad idea. it's not hair length so much as the fringe around the face, anyhow. that's what really changes up the look of a character, IMO. half the time, i'm tempted to just leave the toon in a buzz cut.

^ is there? i really miss facecodes. though sliders are easier to work with, they're much harder to recreate.

Good to know you're OK and haven't been here for this! I just remembered you mentioned Austin. Yes, Houston is built in a swamp, I can imagine it's pretty bad there too. I hadn't heard the Galleria was that bad. Funny you put up a picture from the 2001 flood around Buffalo Bayou. A friend of mine and I were driving in on the 9th, and called the friends we were visiting on the 8th during the early evening to make sure the flooding hadn't reached them. They told us it was fine (north Houston/Aldine area I think) and about an hour later, another storm hit, knocking out their power and phone and they couldn't let us know that the water was almost to their top step and we drove in the next day, completely oblivious...

My daughter says the tornado in Austin was probably more of a microburst, I think it got the roof of an apartment building and that was about it. Friends of mine in San Antonio had similar reports. I think Central Market in Austin got hit, dunno if it was wind storm or an actual tornado. And yes, they're pretty unusual out in central or southeast Texas, unless there's a hurricane involved, but not unknown, unlike north Texas and Oklahoma. Austin got a lot of flooding, but it was concentrated on the green belts which are intended to soak up flooding. Next up is probably a mosquito season from h**l.

Thanks! I should probably be ok, the water will dissipate a bit by next week. And the airport is more north.

2001? Whoops. I just googled Houston flood 2015 and that's one of the things that came up. Probably about that bad right now though. That's awful that your friends got flooded then, hope their house was ok afterward.

Being from Houston, I laughed anytime Austinites complained about "mosquitos". Theirs are tiny and very small in number. VS the black clouds of DOOOOOM you see in Houston haha. Yeah I think I'll be staying indoors much of this summer now...

That was the flood when they found out they lived on the highest ground in their subdivision: the flood washed just barely over the top of the step but never got into their house, thank goodness. Most of the other houses had to replace their carpet, at least. I don't think any of my friends have taken serious damages from this one other than plants, that sort of thing, though some friends outside Austin lost several mature trees and went without power for a day or so.

I dunno, I've lived in both Houston (west side and then near Cy-Fair) and in Austin (north, almost in Pflugerville) and the mosquitoes are just nasty both places sometimes. We used a clothesline in Austin during the summer (because why run a dryer when it's 105 outside?) and if you didn't get the clothes in while the sun was directly overhead, you'd have a dozen bites before you got back inside.
