I would have thought that if Cullen taught in a modern AU, it would have been at a Military College, like Annapolis or West Point.

Meh. I wish she interested me. I can't even bring myself to read it. :/ Maybe I'm still just too scarred from her replacing Cullen's quest from my first playthrough.

Testing an armor mod...I think I really like it! I didn't use the author's face texture though:

Okay, I'm new and I haven't had a chance to wade through this entire thread yet so two things:

Cullen teaching?

And I can so see him at Annapolis for a number of reasons, including the fact that Annapolis itself is beautiful with an almost but not quite New England feel, and well, Cullen and USN or USMC uniform. Oh dear...

And now that I've established my bona fides, Hi, I'm Penny.

Welcome!

As intriguing as it would be for Cullen to be a military instructor, to pull it off convincingly would require knowing quite a bit about how the military academies and the real world military are run, which is very different from a regular university. And honestly, it would have to be a completely different story - you don't get into a military academy without being extremely serious about finishing, which doesn't lend itself nearly as well to wild crushes, etc. and the real risk of a court martial and not just a ruined career for the instructor. There really aren't the same possibilities for fraternization; cadets have virtually no free time (I'm ex-military, btw.) A regular university is going to present a lot fewer problems (unless R2 is secretly an academy graduate or wants to put a lot of time into this one-shot :P)

Thanks. You are right about military academies being very different than a regular university, though iirc they do have civilian instructors. I just checked the USN academy, and the majority of the English department, for example, is civilian. But point is taken

Also taken about fraternization... That word keeps cropping up with Cullen I've noticed.

So what's the plot of this one shot, I'm getting really curious. And am in need some new reading material :)

R2 got inspiration from discussion about the middle of the last page of posts. She's writing Cullen in an AU as a professor with an Amell student/forbidden romance storyline (more than that, you need to see what she's said :P)

Wait, what?

Sorry, didn't mean to be cryptic. I'm still steamed about the Game Guide not telling me that I had to choose Redcliffe in order to get the third quest it listed for Cullen during my first, Cullenmance playthrough. Getting Calpernia instead of a Cullen-tailored, Samson-cameoed, Cullen-attending quest was sort of a kick in teeth. As a result, I just can't find her interesting... altho I recognize that a lot of folks really like her and so there must be something there, and eventually I may come around. Maybe the short story will even help that.

so tl;dr: Ummmmm , nevermind! ;)

Heya, and welcome! Yeah, these are perfectly legitimate ideas for an AU, so go for it! Like Tish mentioned, they don't really work for the idea I'm personally playing with right now, but there are lots of ways to go with a modern AU.

My idea isn't so much a direct translation of the DA:O world into RL but inspired by the characters. So for example, Cullen isn't a cop or a military guy, he's just a guy with a keen sense of history and justice and how to make the world safe. For once, the notion of security vs. freedom *is* just a scholarly debate. ;) Which means, OF COURSE, Anders appears. :P Fun times.

I think fraternization is a big deal for someone like Cullen, since he's spent his whole life watching out for other people but without the opportunity to become intimately close with those people. He grew up in an isolated barracks and was forbidden to fraternize with either his colleagues or his charges. I think that makes for a unique challenge for someone who is so driven by duty, and part of the reason his romance in DA:I is so beautiful, because he finally allows himself that.

My professor!Cullen story, on the other hand.... is nothing like what I usually write and focusing solely on the forbidden aspect. Heh. Because reasons. :D

Yeah... same. I love Before the Dawn too much (for the romance especially) that no matter how interesting Calpernia is or how great the Envy Demon is (played once) they are nowhere near Cullen's character development & Alexius...

The Academy idea does sound but I, unfortunately, have far too many ideas already floating around to do it justice. I sometimes think "out loud" like that just to get the information out and then see what people do with it.

I like the characterization you have for him in the AU, R2s. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Especially for the forbidden :).I like forbidden. Slayers and vampires, brooding vigilantes and cat buglers, mages and templars.... seriously though I am really interested on the whole freedom vs. security as a scholarly debate, and how it would play out with the characters in a modern setting, especially since, besides being a fan of Mr. Rutherford, I'm also a mid twentieth century history buff, and with WW 2 those themes do play big.

On fraternization: Agreed, though I think he might have loosened up at some point if Ferelden Tower hadn't fallen. I just keep hearing that word and Kaiden's comments about battlefield flirting in ME 1.

Oh and R2s Muse. I am officially informing you that you managed to keep me up last night. Thirteen chapters of Fool's Errand, and Fifteen Chapter's of Knight's Bloom.... Plus, reading all that made me actually start writing again... blasted Cullen/FemHawke AU...

I may need a test subject... er beta reader soon.

Gulp. Whelp, I'm not a history buff, or a political science buff, soooo.... now I'm worried I'll get something wrong. LOL Ah well. Just be kind. :D

On fraternization: Agreed, though I think he might have loosened up at some point if Ferelden Tower hadn't fallen. I just keep hearing that word and Kaiden's comments about battlefield flirting in ME 1.

I'm afraid I never actually played through ME, eventho I have a crush on Kaidan all the same. So I don't know what he said about flirting. On workplace romances for Cullen... I dunno. I also could see him personally loosening up, as we eventually see in DA:I. But I guess I see him as a rule follower, and fraternizing with mages under his charge seems unethical to me as opposed to just being boring or conservative. This is why, for me personally, I'm not terribly keen on the Amell/Cullen romance. At least, not until she's free of the Circle. I also think it should have been more of an issue for him with the Inquisitor, but that's another soap box for another day. :D

Of course, this is why it's doubly weird that I'm dabbling with this teacher-student thing. We'll see what professor!Cullen ends up doing. BUT! Feylen officially blessed me writing a story inspired by her pic!! :happy dance: I hope I'm not embarrassed to show it to her...

I have a quick question for those that have romanced Cullen. Does anyone know if certain points in this conversation only happen if you romance him.

I like the idea that Cullen wants the system changed (Some of these ideas are reasonable and well grounded.)  However, this is just my opinion but it feels like hes doing this more for himself then the Mages or Templars. Is that too harsh of me to say?

I'm just looking for discussion not a flame war.

On the politics/history front, if you're willing to let someone you only started talk to help, I'd be happy to do so. Both are passions of mine, so if you want to run anything by me or ask about a factoid, feel free to PM me. If I don't know it, I can probably find it easy enough for you :). Plus I find helping other writers makes my writing better.

Kaiden says something to the effect of "breaking the fraternization regs is going to be way down on the list when they courts martial us."

And probably not a mage, unless it was the Warden considering how deep his feelings really seem to go, but a colleague? Of course, I'm saying that because I came up with this insane idea of Cullen and a warrior Trevelyan meeting in Kirkwall just after the Chantry took a hit.  A templar recruit who's only still a recruit because of politics. Her parents weren't keen on sending her to the templar, so much like Cass, she went to them late, and when the Kirkwall rebellion hit, Bann Trevelyan attempted to "convince" the Order that they didn't need one more recruit. She gets sent to Kirkwall to get her out of Ostwick so the Knight Commander there could cool things down, and at the same time prove she's doing needed work that isn't just killing mages in job lots.

I do tend to write (in my own head at least since the only fic I've actually put to keyboard is the Cullen/FemHawke) that Cullen's romantic entanglement with the mage Inquisitor doesn't go as smoothly. Especially since I generally tend toward world states where he's infatuated with the Warden. It makes the final "gotcha" so much more satisfying.

And yuph, that was me. I wish I had more brain cells to give better feedback, but honestly I was enjoying myself to much to want to really engage the brain on the level of critique I try to give. I'm sorry. :(

I have the prologue and half of the first chapter of Old Friends done. My biggest worry, well two biggest worries, are that I haven't done this fic thing in a while and am rusty, and that I've never written in the Dragon Age universe before and thus am not getting the tone right. Our own worst critic...

Now to go look at pretty pictures then type more. :)
