Actually, she seems to fight right handed in most of the scenes I can find, but she definitely writes left-handed...

I agree, that lake date alone provided all my romantic needs, I even wrote a ficlet about it
Taking a girl back to your safe place & giving her something you've treasured for over a decade, something you believe has brought you luck enough to keep you safe. I look at it as him valuing her safety/survival over his because he's no doubt in love with her now and just find it so sweet. Not to mention the morning after scene, all the little hand gestures & the way he looks at her. I do love a handsy man
Actually, my favorite part is just after Arbor Wilds, in the chapel. I cried.
You're on the right track - he's actually not really on board with letting the Empress die. If you go back and talk to him about it after the cutscene with Josie and Leliana, he'll make that quite clear.
I don't talk to him at the ball, mostly because I want to run the man flirting with him through.
Of course the wartable banter ' just stand there and look pretty' makes me want to ask Josephine to contract a few murders. Make an example or ten. Even nobles would get the hint.

None taken at all. I actually got a good laugh at where you jumped to. I think I scared my rugrats
and I admit, I'm curious as to how that may work.
I'm with you guys. Cullen is much more like Garrus than Kaiden.
The only thing I'd argue with sagefic is that Cullen is a romantic. He clings to the ideals of the order even in the face of Meredith's disapproval, and then there's the almost lecture at Haven. The romantic is just buried under lots and lots of scar tissue.
I always thought his comment about the Empress was odd, and I got the feeling his agreement was grudging.
i guess what i said conflates romantic vs. idealist.
what i meant was that both guys are idealistic. and yes, both guys have a romantic impulse where their sweetie is concerned. but kaidan strikes me as romanticizing things a lot more - as in, 'this is the way i wish the world was'. his visions of space travel are totally rose-colored glasses. even at the outset in ferelden, cullen strikes me as a bit more of a realist.
but yeah, both guys idealize the military 'save the world' role. both guys want to serve 'the people.'
i guess maybe what i should say is that kaidan seems to idealize things in a more person-to-person way. like, i will save *this colonist* or i will protect *this commander*. i think it's also why he takes shepard's cerberus thing so seriously. he connects with his role/mission in a one-to-one way.
cullen strikes me as more abstracted and removed. it's not that he doesn't care, but he sees the big picture. i will save *this whole nation* or *this entire army*.
i like both of them, and i'll defend kaidan in me2 forever, but yeah. that's my completely and utterly scientifically founded read on things. ![]()

Hmm, that is a nice moment aswell, though they all are to be fair. The moment in the chapel never really jumped out at me like, say, the scene after you arrive at skyhold or the first kiss. What is it about the chapel scene that you(or anyone else) like? If you don't mind sharing.

Not at all. It's a very personal and character driven scene, and at the very end and take either of the nonsnarky ones, there's a wonderful vulnerability about him. "When I think of losing you...I can't." Greg Ellis nails it at that point as Cullen's voice breaks.

First, apologies, I'm on my Nook, which makes multiquote a real pain, but I see what you mean.

Thank you for explaining. It's some times difficult for me to read between the lines,so when people disect a scene it really helps me to understand it better. I love reading people's long meta's about characters
Cullen's vulnerability is something that I adore about his romance, how he can switch so easily from commander to lover, like the beginning of his love scene for instance.

You're welcome. And I agree about enjoying how people see characters in general. It helps my writing a great deal, bot fan fic and original stuff.
And it is nice he can make that switch. If there was one thing I was worried about it was that we might need to do too much nursing when it came to his trauma. There was a running gag for a while that all Bioware LI were serious trauma cases starting with Anomen's family issues in bg 2.

Oh Anomen... One of the most self-absorbed men in all of RPG-dom. I actually quite enjoyed his romance though, my PC started off by humouring him "of course I'd love to listen to you talk about yourself and denigrate my accomplishments. Who wouldn't want that?" And laughing to herself about it. And then she was pleasantly surprised when he started showing actual interest in what she had to say and eventually fell for the romantic gestures.
But as amusing as it was I really don't want a repeat of him. Independent characters much preferred.

That almost makes me want to play BG2 again...esp now since you can get it on tablet.
The thing I like about Bioware romances is that we can compare the LIs but they aren't carbon copies of each other... as much as I loved Alistair's romance, it would certainly devalue his romance, in my mind, if say Cullen's was very similar/same or vise versa etc it's what makes them more enjoyable and sometimes it's what gets you to keep coming back to play the games. I'm playing different characters, hence I need different types of romances.

Agree. That scene encapsulates a very interesting dimension of his personality and back story, that he's spent his whole life working on behalf of the greater good. But now, he has a far more personal interest in how it plays out, for the first time, and struggles with the need to keep you, the individual, safe while balancing that with keeping the world safe. I love that it's difficult for him to "send you to him again", and yet he does it anyway. ![]()

I've got the EE on my tablet, though I can't use any mods with it there. Dorn's romance in the EE is intriguing, it's not often game companies let you romance someone truly evil. I'd love it if Bioware put an evil 'romance' in the next DA. Almost certainly unhealthy, but an interesting change of pace.

Greg really really really nails that scene. That's my favourite scene too ![]()
The way his voice quiver for a while, that look on his face. Whew, the whole Bioware team did a good job really. Actually what's impressive is also how much feeling in that scene is conveyed in the non-verbal part as much as the verbal part. I re-watched that scene at least a dozen time in a row and each time I noticed these tiny quirks that the animation team put into his gestures. It's really really well done.
It's funny that when Cullen being a badass was initially what attracted me my wee tiny little elf to him, it was his more vulnerable side that made me her want to stay with him until the very end.
Even more weirdly, somehow this vulnerable side shows me how strong he actually is... ![]()

I do agree that Garrus and Cullen have a alot in common,..
- both unhappy with the system
- both hell-bent on revenge
- both like to stand with you on tall things (Presidium, battlements)
- both are excellent commanders
- both have a funny walk
Ha...that's all I can think of off the bat. But I do love dem boys!!! ![]()

oh, geez, no apologies needed. ... (edit) - you meant apologies for the nook. oh, durr.
yeah, see, this is why i have to stop occasionally and clarify myself. i always i want to go back and edit. is the writer-geek in me.
also, i over analyze stories/characters as a hobby, so please excuse me if i frequently geek out as i try to understand the characters and what motivates them. i can get *really* geeked out about this if i get going. yeap. this is what i do for fun. lol
since i wrote a lot of ME fic, i spent a lot of time with kaidan - garrus, too - and honestly, i was a bit odd shifting gears to cullen. he's kind of a mix of the two of them - but in other ways, totally not.
and YES for the self-assured characters. this is part of why i loved DAI so much - the characters you join with are all pretty mature and well-adjusted. SUCH a nice change from poor hawke. (hmmm... probably gonna get in trouble for saying that). i do love me some da2 angst, but none of the romances appeals to me personally. don't get me wrong! i played that game with well over a dozen hawkes, but none of them sucked me into writing fanfic. maybe if i could have run away with aveline.... ![]()

LOL. It was always funny for me back there were times when my husband would have the TV in the background and he'd be watching Animaniacs. Hearing Anomen and then Wacko Warner (both voiced by the same person) is pretty trippy. Especially if you're about to hit the big moment in the romance arc.

I love that line. It's so sweet, but at the same time I want to hit him over the head. One of my favorite sayings is "there are two kinds of ego: one takes credit for all things that go right, the other takes blame for all thing that go wrong." I really want to shake Cullen and tell him that, because seeing him suffer that guilt is painful. Not that he'd listen of course.

How would that help? Telling him you feel bad because of his guilt will only add more guilt to him because now he'll feel bad for making you feel bad because of that guilt of him that I'm quite sure he can't really help ![]()
Personally I really think that if you tell him that, he might stop telling you things like that because he'll be afraid of giving you more burden. Cullen's very considerate on his feeling & everything concerning the Inquisitor. It's more healthy if he can say things like that openly. He was sharing his burden... Telling him that will only enlarge that burden
