GARRUS VAKARIAN FOREVAH!! (I dreams of those mandibles...*tiger sound*)
I do agree that Garrus and Cullen have a alot in common,..
- both unhappy with the system
- both hell-bent on revenge
- both like to stand with you on tall things (Presidium, battlements)
- both are excellent commanders
- both have a funny walk
Ha...that's all I can think of off the bat. But I do love dem boys!!!
Both stand by their superior's/love interest's decisions and would never turn their back on her...unlike someone else who shall not be named....
Garrus and Cullen are both #1 in my book! I don't think I could choose between the two.

This is essentially the problem, tho, because those cultural implications don't exist in Thedas. In fact, the implications that do exist have absolutely nothing to do with him, and everything to do with the Orlesians and the Valmonts. The lion has been used *a lot* in Dragon Age, but not in a way that makes sense for Cullen. But, I'll stop there.
Sorry about the late reply. I see your point. My interpretation was that the devs were intending to exploit the real world symbolic connotations of lions more than they were worried about what they mean in Thedas specifically. It's probably a good thing the helmet didn't really carry through.
On an unrelated note, I've been playing MP and I heard the Alchemist's description of Cullen, "he smells like elderberries," for the first time. It's got me trying to come up with a cologne for Cullen, but all of the scents I think of are either too strong or too bizarre when I research them.
But I'm interested in scent design, so it's fun all the same.

I have elderberry tea and it smells like wine...and I love elderberry wine soooooo.... ![]()
But I thought they said "elderflower," not "elderberry."
They also say he smells like oak moss. That is a common fragrance ingredient, for both men and women. It's a wonderful scent.

Yes, it's elderflower and oakmoss.

If you search our thread ("This topic") for the word "elderflower" you'll find our past discussion which has quite a bit about the smells and their use in various fragrances if you're interested.
Also, there's a fun site that does make DA inspired fragrances called Scent of a Warden which has a Cullen fragrance from before DA:I came out. It's nevertheless rather clever.
The whimsical one I'll leave here is that there is a fan who has made a perfume line: Scent of a Warden.
Knight-Captain Cullen: Gentleness cloaked in clean, sharp, regretful duty. Cypress, cajeput, neroli and sweet orange on a base of myrrh.
...and a clever fan review of it:

I love you. Had I told you that XD
Guess that this will explain the sheer number of hamsters running around Thedas...
Personally I'd say Nug is Thedas' version of either bunnies, hamsters, & cute guinea pigs.
On a different subject, if someone can please help me for image composition for a Cullen drawing please PM me? I need to choose between 2 versions and any opinions are welcomed ![]()

You know, y'all got me thinking about whether he feels guilty in that scene or not. I guess I never read it that way so I've been thinking about why.I love that line. It's so sweet, but at the same time I want to hit him over the head. One of my favorite sayings is "there are two kinds of ego: one takes credit for all things that go right, the other takes blame for all thing that go wrong." I really want to shake Cullen and tell him that, because seeing him suffer that guilt is painful. Not that he'd listen of course.
I think we've seen him respect the Inquisitor's choices too much for him to feel like he would be to blame if Corypheus killed her, because despite his turn of phrase, it isn't really his decision. I mean... he doesn't really have a choice. (1) Who else would go? She's the only one with the sparkly hand, And, (2) it's not really his call anyway; it's the Inquisitor's, because she's the boss. I guess I didn't interpret it as him feeling guilty for making a hard choice between sending her or sending someone else, because that isn't really the choice.
Instead, I felt more like he's feeling lousy because he doesn't want her to go, even while he knows she has to. That he wishes there were an alternative so she's not in harm's way, and that the conflict of his personal life vs. his duty is unexpected and difficult for him. So if he's feeling guilty, it would be more for his personal "weakness" (which, for the record, I don't personally view as weakness) of being so attached that he wishes she didn't have to go. I think part of why it feels far more personal is how he talks about himself in the first person. Instead of the royal "we" of the Inquisition sending her into battle, it's "I have to send you to him" meaning he personally has to let go long enough for her to throw herself into danger again.
So.... I guess I've argued myself in a bit of a circle. He might feel guilty, but I think it would be a different kind of guilt that I'd originally assumed everyone meant.

So when Cullen says "I must send you to him" he's talking about sending her to fight Corypheus? I always thought he meant he must send her to the maker, as in praying for the maker to watch over her. It makes sense, and is much sweeter, the first way in terms of how he delivers that line. Now I see where everyone is coming from. ![]()

LOL That *would* be a different way of interpreting it! I dunno, I've certainly always thought it was him talking about sending her to fight Cory and how she might not come back.
Cullen: When the time comes you will be thrown in his path again.
Andraste preserve me, I have to send you to him.
IQ: What if I can't...Cullen, if I don't...
Cullen: Maker. No.
Whatever happens, you will come back.
IQ: I certainly hope so.
Cullen: The thought of losing you...I can't.

Oh I totally see it that way now, sometimes I just need these things spelt out for me. Though this time I don't mind being the last one to click 'cause now I get to enjoy the scene like it's the first time.
It really is so sweet & I can imagine Cullen never thought that'd be a conflict he'd have to face.

This scene should have ended with some desperate forbidden chapel sexy time.

Welcome back! ![]()
Hmm personally I can hardly imagine sexy time at the chapel at that moment... but what I would not give to see some crying at that scene. A single tear falls to his cheek and his voice started to crack... She wiped it gently and her eyes are red too... Then before he knew it more tears leaked to his cheeks...
"Maker... Please do not take her away from me..."
please kill me now

This is what happens when I get bored and have just finished reading a book I really liked (in this case, The Art of War, which really does contain all the advice I've roughly paraphrased). ![]()

My Inquisitor was male, but boy did I love to have the chance to flirt with Cullen a little.
While playing, I told my housemate (who was romancing Dorian): "This looks like the kind of guy who goes over-the-top romantic, all-for-my-lady, I-am-yours, you-are-my-everything style when he falls in love".
She was like: "Yup, totally looks the type".
I never thought I'd be interested in him at all, but he is charming in DAI.

Sorry again guys, although I suppose it's kinda on topic, the fic is about Cullen

Yes, The Art of War is, um, interesting. I've rewritten bits of it to use before. Fortunately most of the advice isn't quite as questionable as some of the things you quoted ![]()

If anyone can please give their opinion I'd appreciate this, can't decide between these 2 versions of Cullen...?
These aren't even one third way done but I'll need to decide now since the balance will all change depending if I go one way or another... Any opinion is welcomed
