Oh, man, yes! Thank you! And I'd say from the eyebrows and beard scruff that his hair is dark brown to black. In my screenshots (I can't get closeups,) I couldn't even see the tattoos on the left side of his nose, lol. A very interesting look for a Templar, rather Carta-ish instead of the solid yeoman-to-noble relatively prosperous look most of them have...

You're welcome. I managed to catch a glimpse of his hair. Dark brown or black seems about right. Also jugding form his side burns he shares either Krem's or Floriane's haircut or has one of the butch cuts.

And too bad we couldn't ask the first tattooed Templar about his tattoos. I would like to know whether Templars are allowed to have them or if he got them after he left the order. Totally unimportant question but I'm a curious person...

Hey all. Need to ask a favor. I'm going to be flat on my back as of Monday, for about three days due to fun minor surgery. Since hand eye coordination will be shot, and posting on pain killers is a baaaad idea, anyone have light fluffy fic suggestions?

And I know I haven't been around for a few days, but what is this about a final dlc? Already?

Carver had that mabari tattoo he got at Ostagar, right? In a game where he joined the Order, there would have been him too. Though of course his tattoo was never as blatant as Rylen's right on his face, but it doesn't seem to be much of a problem.

I don't think it would be an issue (uniform dress codes are pretty modern) but I'm curious about when he got them and why. Though I checked, that appears to be a variation on one available to humans rather than connected to the Carta tattoos (I don't play humans and hadn't realized some were similar.)

Welcome back! I don't think it would be an official problem (strict uniform codes are modern usually,) but facial tattoos at least do seem to be associated in game with specific groups and social classes for the most part, and he's also much less formal than most of the Templars have been. Makes me really curious about his background... First street rat background for a Templar, maybe?

Hi there! ;)

Some of the human tattoos are very strange for the Trevelyan background, yeah. Some of the designs are very similar to the tattoos we see the Chasind and the Ash Warriors wear in DAO, which makes you wonder why a noble from the Free Marches would carry such an oddball symbol, unless they maybe had distant Chasind roots. (technically I know it's just simple asset recycling, but in-universe it kinda doesn't work)

I don't know if facial tattoos are a particular marking of street rats among humans, though? The humans we do see wearing them are usually tied to tribal culture like the Chasind or Ash Warriors, or organized crime like the Crows or the Kirkwall gangs (and in this case it was really just the blood mages in those gangs). I don't really remember any homeless or peasant NPC with one, at least from the top of my head. But it's an interesting idea to explore, specially given Rylen's just-get-it-done attitude, a street smart guy would know to not waste time "smiting at the ashes," as he says, when there's a city to rebuild.

Right, I forgot about Carver. ^^o I only got this banter once and never made him Templar. But Carver has his tattoo somewhere not visible. I thought that facial tattoos might be bigger problem. I should have been more specific. I also would like to know the meaning of it, if it has one.

Yes, that's true but like you said, facial tattoos seem to be associated with certain groups or social classes, so I thought it might be a problem. But on the other hand, looking at the full face version of the tattoo it seems to be modeled after a male face with beard and all. So maybe it's the offical tattoo of an other Starkhaven order?

"Compared to what you must have seen in the Winter Palace, this place is calm. All we’ve got are man-eating giant lizards, lunatics, monsters, and a giant hole full of darkspawn. At least no one’s asked us to dance with them." (I think I have that right...)

This screams for a conversation with Cullen...

Edit: sorry, posted too soon. One of the reasons I said both groups and social classes is that the facial tattoos do seem to show up on specific groups like the Chasind and Ash Warriors or criminal groups who may not fall into a particular social class, but definitely are a bit marginal in some sense. But I'm guessing social class can also be somewhat implied...how many dwarven or human nobles have we seen with facial tattoos or even merchants and crafters?

OMG this... I would love to play through these little snippets of time. Or even just see it in some kind of flash back. I really want to know the truth of it all!

*Maybe you need to write this*

If you're interested in speculative ancient Arlathan, I include a number of flashbacks in my Solas romance, "Halam'shivanas". (Warning:  some chapters NSFW)

Cullen also has some sort of third-hand interactions with Rylen through the War Table. I don't have it handy, tho.

I rather like the Knight-Captain  a dry sense of humour, and a look that says he gets things done. Wouldn't mind seeing more of him.

Hehehe I'd love to see Rylen-Cullen snarky interaction voiced... like Cullen visiting The Western Approach and they snarks together XD

Because well, Cullen does have that snarky side too. Remember Chancellor Roderick in Haven? Before the Val Royaux mission?

it's hard to tell how common tattoos are within certain circles in Ferelden, tho. Alistair has a whole conversation with Zevran about how he's never even heard of or seen tattoos before.

I'm really not sure about facial tattoo's signification for human in Thedas. In one hand, the Dalish treat Valaaslin as mark of adulthood, rite of passage, hence something honourable, on the other hand the casteless dwarfs are tattooed to mark their castelessness.

I'm not sure about how tattoos are for human though... Carver's mabari tattoos are not on the face... But Rylens' are.

Blast, I'd forgotten about that, and I don't think I got screenshots of those missions. Worse, I just ran through some of them on Reska without thinking about it, but I didn't make a permanent save recently (as in about 10 hours before I took Griffon Wing, lol.) Thanks for reminding me, though, i think I can use the Wiki to backtrack to the text of the missions... :P

Actually, they're inconsistent about the casteless mark - it's referred to in DAO as a brand, and I've continued to treat it that way because I can imagine the Shaperate doing exactly that (and if you think they'd hesitate to do that to an infant, as a casteless dwarf, if you take the right conversation options and push the head guy, he'll tell you that you're an abomination who should never have been born.) But other times, it's been treated as a simple tattoo, which just makes me think they backpedaled on it.

I would love to see Rylen as an LI in future dragon age. just sayin'

Also, Fanfic Wednesday offering. I finally got to a chapter I'd drafted ages ago - an actual like conversation between Cullen/Herald. Huzzah! It's um, chapter 18, which just goes to show how this thing got large...fast. anyhow, some, sorta fluff, finally.

Anyhow, Ch 18 - Thaw - at my site (with pics), at Archive of Our own.

I just realized something. In my DA2 game, Hakwe became good friends with Cullen and even called him that in one of the dialogue choices, and yet there's no acknowledgement between them in DAI. Then again, minus a private convo with Leliana, her and Morrigan hardly interact either.

Yeah, it's a shame they didn't leave in the option for them to at least acknowledge that they knew each other (or much much more, in the case of some of my Hawkes <3 ). Unfortunately, Cullen's friendship with Hawke, or utter lack thereof, wasn't tracked in DA2, and could be all over the board (particularly given how many people despised him in DA2), so I imagine it would have been hard to do such a conversation justice given the possible range of reactions. Of course... that would have been easier if they had left in the DA Keep tile about whether or not you were friends, and just let you set the flag manually, but alas, 'twas not to be.

There were the tiles, I remember the tile with Cullen's beautiful hand opened or making a fist. Actually I just don't get it, if the reason they erase these tiles is because there's no flag on DA2, well anyway we are NOT importing saves. It is DA keep for Mythal's sake.

Not Cullen but this is Alistair, with Blue, Cheddar, Feta & Gouda. And they are perfect. Bless Picchar's heart. Anyone who dare say the contrary please step to battle arena right now.

I remember this tile. It would have been interesting to see a cut scene play depending on which one was chosen. (Example) If Cullen was a friend to Hawke the two could reminisce about Kirkwall over a drink, or if they were not friends, they could be seen arguing and possibly leading to Hawke threatening Cullen at knife point which we have to stop.

But your right, it would likely be hard to do a scene like that justice.

Even though you could tease Cullen a bit in DAO, it's no wonder he was finally made a romance option in DAI, even if it was last minute. I always felt that Hawke could have flirted with him like my Warden does with Teagan, but despite their friendliness, it sadly never seemed to go anywhere. It's also a shame he wasn't liked in DA2. I was first introduced to him in that game because it was my first, and I liked him right away. Seeing him kneel before my Mage Hawke at the end was quite an intense moment.

When I saw him for the first time in DA 2, I must admit I kinda went squee. I was so happy to see him, and his character development made sense.

I'm going to assume that same development was at the root of the dislike.

There are a few lines of Cullen talking about Hawke in the DA:I files that I don't remember hearing in the game, in addition to the two about Carver from the "fresh air" conversation that fontofnothing posted earlier. (Or at least I think the lines in question are about Hawke--some don't specifically mention Hawke/the Champion but have male/female variants. Though the one I've linked here could be about a US Amell/Surana--my Amell is alive, so I wouldn't know from experience, and I don't have the version of the modding tools that lets you see the ordered talk trees, just sort of a word soup. At any rate, I feel like I'd remember it, but I could have just missed it in-game:) https://www.dropbox....ncible.mp3?dl=0

Maybe they thought about having Cullen talk more about her/him but given how unhappy some people actually were with NPC Hawke's portrayal for whatever reason, and how big the love/hate differential for Cullen is across fandom, I can see why that would be a lot of effort for little hope of unequivocal success.
